Yeah, FF13 was a pretty mediocre game, but at least the music was good!

I may get scolded for this...

My main problem with FFXIII was the lack of emotion. I've responded emotionally to quite a few of the FF games, convoluted stories and all. I've always found at least a few genuinely touching moments in each of the games, but FFXIII, while it had a story that could have been really epic and really emotional, well it never reached those heights. The ending should have been fucking tearjerking with
the return of Serah and Sazh's kid
but it treats it like it's no big fucking deal and is instead some funny oh haha well I guess we did it lol kind of moment with the fucking shittiest pop song I've ever heard playing over it-- contrast that with FFX's ending which was pretty fucking sad and had original music, the game's original THEME playing over it, which was pretty effective.

This is what FFXIII largely lacked for me. I had other problems with the game, but the ending happened and I was just like, I don't care about any of this shit.
 
It wasn't too bad overall, but too orchestral for my tastes. Isn't something I'd listen to separately. Shimomura@XV is going to blow anything XIII has out of the water.
 
If people like FFXIII's music, they should check out Sigma Harmonics on the DS. Hamauzu is awesome.

There were a lot of tracks that weren't like, orchestral driven if you know what I mean. Some key tracks were, but a lot of it felt synth.

Sigma Harmonics is terrific. What's frustrating for me is that it's been four years and Hamauzu hasn't done much of note since FFXIII. He contributes stuff to the sequels but I feel does his best work when going it alone.

They'd like it more if it was by a Japanese artist. I never saw the problem with it, it's no cheesier than what the other regions got.

The music was the ONLY thing the game did right. The battle music is literally the best I have ever heard in recent FF history. I absolutely loved it. It went from that hard metal-ish rock to that perfect orchestrated sound. I was like wow

I liked My Hands too though I really do not understand WHY they choose it exactly. The tempo does fit with the end cutscene but the lyrics are so random.

I feel the same way about Go Shiina. Tales of Legendia has one the best soundtracks I've ever heard, then ... what? God Eater? A couple tracks in Tekken? Come on man, do something! SOMEONE GIVE HIM A JOB!
 
What a waste of an excellent soundtrack . It's crazy cos the game would have been great if they gave the characters more depth and made the traversal less boring. Not sure how they could do that with the plot they were working with though...

Yeah, that one stings too. If anything, they should have had him alternate Tales duties with Sakuraba so that the latter wouldn't have been so overworked.
 
I'm glad to see praise for the best boss battle theme music in the FF Series (Force your way from FFVIII). It truly is amazing. FFVIII as a soundtrack as a whole was pretty good as well. As was FFVII. Both set the moods of their respective games off pretty great.

FF8 has the best boss music of all time. It's incredibly underrated.
 
Chrono Cross still holds first place in my "disappointing games with amazing soundtracks", list.

FF13's music was pretty good though.
 
The battle system in this game is so underrated by the haters. It's what kept me going through all 60 or so linear hours of mediocre story, setting, and characters.

Back on topic, the music was good, but music is far less powerful when you don't care about what's happening around it.

Edit: Oh, yeah the game was pretty too. That certainly helped me keep going. I might not have known what was going on, but my eyes didn't care.

That's why it's one of the best, if not thee best battle theme of the series. It's sets a tone and makes each battle seem more tense, so it feels appropriate for a battle theme.Yes, IX's battle theme is very good, and it may even be more enjoyable to listen to than VII's,but it doesn't evoke much emotion and doesn't do much to heighten the in-game battles. So in the context of the game IX isn't as good as VII.

Edit: Thinking about it though, I think "blinded by light" might be my favorite of the series, it's so good.

Edit#2: but FF8 has the best boss themes in the series, hands down.

Naoshi Mizuta is a freaking God amongst men...that track was my absolute favorite. In fact, considering it plays within minutes of starting FFXIII-2..it just gave me this sense of "OH MY GOD THIS GAME IS GONNA ROCK!"

XIII has some excellent music, and it's made me a fan of Hamauzu -- so much so that I started listening to some of his older stuff (Dirge of Cerberus seems to suffer from the same things FF13 did -- great soundtrack....not-so-great gameplay..)
 
XIII had a fantastic soundtrack. Dust to Dust, Blinded By Light, Sabers Edge(even though I think it peaks too early) and Fang's theme were all great.

Same. VIII's OST is so good and it deserves any form of praise it gets.
 
Someone already asked this, but could XIII-2's reputation be elaborated upon? If it truly is XIII but better, I'd like to give it a try - especially now that it costs ~$15. Here's some context: I never played XIII because of how much hate it got, and because at the time of its release I had all but stopped playing JRPGs. Generally, I like to keep an open mind and find the good in games I play.
 
Like the rest of the game, the soundtrack was pretty dissapointing. The initial trailers sadly already had what is by leaps and bounds the best track in the game.

XIII is better, IMO, but XIII-2 definitely has its charms. More of the fun battle system, good story, but it's VERY easy compared to XIII.

I'd pass on it. I had high hopes for XIII-2, but the game felt incredibly disjointed. It was basically bits and pieces of FFXIII areas, randomly slapped together in the time travel menu. The story seems promising during the game's intro, and then proceeds to meander into nothingness within 30 minutes. You get to reunite with the shitty characters from FFXIII, so I guess that's kind of cool. But that's about it.

The game was basically an excuse for Square to reuse assets and try and quell their angry shareholders.

Virtually all of the games Hamauzu has written for have been major turds. I guess some people will stick up for SaGa Frontier 2 but I can't think of many who will do the same for Unlimited SaGa, Dirge of Cerberus or Musashi Samurai Legend.
 
Saber's Edge is my favorite XIII track. It's just perfect. It really gave me a sense of struggle when fighting a boss.

Unguarded Future in XIII-2 is great too, beautiful melody.
