Star Wars Outlaws runs "pretty poorly" on the Switch 2 [Update] GWG: "I was wrong"

Some perspectives

~9W switch 2 VS ~17W (?) Steam deck OLED (more powerful than original SD)

It's not equivalent settings but for how it looks, whatever Ubisoft did was the right call to perform that good. Could maybe be a future patch for PC portables

This shows us how it would run on a ps4

The grass looks very different compared to the other platforms. And I think it looks much better. It interacts with the lighting more, its denser more reactive in general all while, supposedly less intense on performance than the standard grass. That's some magic they pulled off.

It's certainly more efforts than I thought they would do for the port in all honesty. Kudos to Ubisoft RedLynx

The amount of work that went into this port is insane.

If you look closely, here and there you can spot very, very subtle reductions in geometric detail everywhere. Those reductions are not in the PC version or the console versions at all. These lamps for example:

They knew what people would not notice much and cut right there. While simultaneously increasing effects that mattered more, like the grass.

The port studio is insanely talented.

IIRC RTX cards have a feature that can do that automatically; adaptive shading maybe.

I will die on a hill saying this -- on both SW Outlaws as well as Cyberpunk 2077, the image quality on the Switch 2 version with DLSS is better than the image quality on PS5 Pro using FSR3/PSSR. It's visibly cleaner with less artifacts noise.

I've been toggling back and forth between both games on both Switch 2 / PS5 Pro and it's clear to me.

Power of the DLSS

They've also adjusted geometry etc., but DLSS is such a game changer on the Switch 2

He then continues to say that if the game were built from the ground up for Switch 2, they could use a cartridge even using the snowdrop engine, but this game was made with SSD in mind.

OLED screen doing a lot in terms of HDR for the Steam Deck, but clearly this game runs much better (and looks better) on Switch 2, though I don't think that was ever in doubt.

What gets me is that we've seen in this thread how other PC handhelds run the game, and still not as good as Switch 2, they at least get better using frame gen, Steam Deck just didn't.

That's uhh...definitely interesting and not something I would have ever considered (not being a developer myself).

I suppose we now know data/storage space limitations aren't the only legitimate reasons for going the game-key route. That said, hopefully moving forward future games that ARE designed with Switch 2 in mind can actually take advantage of the systems data streaming capabilities and still release on an actual Physical card.

I still think that having the data in a slower cart but requiring an install just like disks in PS5/XS would be a better alternative...

That's probably because RT is where their advantage over Switch 2 ends, Switch 2 has dedicated RT Nvidia hardware inside.

I'm not a developer, but if that's an a actual possibility, then Hell yeah. Full data on the card is ultimately the best solution either way.

The more I read about this game (and see video of it), the more I want to get it.
Me too. But somehow my store is kinda stuck with the releases on console's launch, only showing Split Fiction, Cyberpunk, CIV VII, Hitman, Mario Kart and Yakuza Zero. No Kirby, no Star Wars, not the other releases

It's not like carts of old where the cart also had processors inside them so they worked like NVMe drives (which btw NVMe drive use the same tech as cartridges). Today's carts are just storage, they are more akin to SD cards than actual cartridges. So downloading/installing the game from cart to system should be something they can do unless Nintendo made it so they can't.

I'd love it if Switch 2 carts could eventually have edram in them for a speed boost but they'd be expensive as hell, we'd be looking at the N64 days again where game prices differed wildly from game to game.

Well, this game is new to me. I've put about 3 hours into it, and immersed myself in the criminal underground. At first, it was a tad upsetting that the classic John Williams score with scrolling text didn't greet me. What sold me, over time, was how much it feels like they're going for the world of the Mandalorian. I LOVED that series. Now I wish it was a Mando game. This girl's pretty vanilla. Oh, well. Still enjoying myself.

Imagine if the Switch 2 is actually the platform now where this game takes off. It didn't sell too well on the other consoles.

It's a conspiracy but part of me thinks they showed a very early version of it to get negative publicity. Negative publicity can be very beneficial as well, especially if that is followed with extremly positive publicity like we see now.

Honestly what is the chance of this being just a clever marketing trick?

After watching the DF video, this has become a thread of shame.

I'm really glad to hear that he was wrong and that the performance issues will be fine unlocked... When I don't buy it, I want it to be clear. It's because it's a shitty game not because of performance issues.

Last I saw it was #2 on the eshop. The best thing Ubi did for themselves was hit the launch window, then people will snap this up on some Christmas shopping, because Star Wars. They're riding the wave.

Wild that even when using the 21:9 cinematic ultra-wide mode, the Switch 2 renders this amount of sharp detail without incurring in that Vaseline blur that Switch 1 games used to have. Wizardry.

The difference in foliage is insane. Like some Switch 1 vs PS4 or even PC crap. Except the PC is the Switch 2, and the Switch 1 is the Deck.

Still, this doesn't even accurately represent the difference between the Deck and Switch 2 for me, because I use the docked profile on the Switch 2 on the go with XR glasses.

So, while it would be a fair 20W vs 20W for power for me, the graphical difference on 1080p OLED glasses would be even more in the favor of the Switch 2 playing under the docked profile which generally results in native 1080p60 or 1080p30 instead of upsampling.

Any videos on this setup? Sounds extremely cool. Never even knew it was a possibility.

It's not easy to get videos of the XR glasses, but it legit is amazing looking, at least for any game that runs properly, some Switch 1 games stuck at under 30fps and under 720p aren't good, but hopefully they see patches eventually. For the other 90% of stuff, it's like having an HDTV anywhere, on lunch in the car, on the train, etc. And from the outside, it just looks like you have a pair of glasses and a controller, if they can even see your waist. Of course, at home the main use would be bed I guess, if the TV's not in the same area.

You can search reddit for mobile dock pro and switch 2, but you can make a pretty compact little setup for the go, see here for a quick pack I threw together. Entry cost for the glasses and power bank/dock is gonna be like $300+ ($200 +/- for the glasses and $100 for the dock).

It seems like they should have an advanced/hidden option that lets you play portable at full power (just changing the maximum res to native) as long as you understand battery life takes a hit, or maybe to further proof it from becoming the norm for standard use to have it enabled if charging too.

How do you get docked performances while away? The XR setup forces docked mode like it thinks it's docked?

Yup, you basically need to connect it to a device that tells it it's docked, same as the Switch 1. Obviously running at 20W will turn the already low 2.5 hour battery to like ~1 hour, so it ends up being necessary for the dock to also power the device, which the mobile dock pro does (for like 4-6 hours).

I imagine a few years in, there'll be all sorts of options for portable docks, like with the Switch 1 there are hundreds of docks compatible with it, even ones that aren't docks at all - I have a portable OLED display (essentially a tablet with no brains) which can all by itself get the Switch 1 to think it's docked.

  • Improved shadows at the edge of the screen when moving in cities and stations
  • Improved quality of leaves, cloth and other things that let light through
  • Various other small visual fixes and improvements

I saw some screenshots. The game looks even better... They fixed her hair too

Amazing… BTW… Where is the Switch 2 doubters goalpost right now? I need to update the moving goalpost list.
I got a response in the other thread claiming "when PS6 portable comes out" it would crush Switch 2 or something like that. We need more consensus tho.

BTW, even DF might start changing their minds probably regarding their expectations, it's a good thing this game came out this early so we can finally start having Switch 2 discussions without the usual "b... but Nintendo!!" crowd.

Thank goodness Silksong came out when it did, or I would be seriously tempted to buy this at full price instead of doing the responsible thing and waiting for the inevitable sale a couple of months from now.

Edit: Seems like Silksong's launch was probably the only thing that kept Outlaws from hitting #1 on the North American eShop. Pretty impressive for a third party port of a game that performed mediocre on other platforms.

Priceless... Is amazing that Star Wars Outlaw passed from being their biggest weapon against the SW 2 to their worst nightmare in matters of seconds.

That star trooper looks like he's cropped out of a ps2 game. The other 2 images look good for a handheld.

As per the video "hits 30fps most of the time". Why would anyone not play this game at 60fps. It's 2025.

Portability or because they don't care, console gamers didn't care about 60 fps after the 6th generation, since then up until 2020 the human eye couldn't see more than 30 fps so 60 was a waste of power. Now all of a student 60 fps is gaming standard and whatnot lmao.

I mean, I wouldn't play anything at 30 fps unless I have no choice and I REALLY want to play the game (a couple Nintendo franchises basically), but let's let everyone enjoy things as they want, like some people are ok with portability, or they don't feel like buying any other gaming platform, etc.
