I know this will have been discussed to death, but I only just saw it.

SPOILERS (obviously)

Overall the best film of those we've seen so far, and it'll possibly be the best of all of them in the end, I just don't see the future books being adapted well enough without leaving out so much content that it'll drive me mad.

I have some problems with it though. They rushed the starting again, like they have with every film, which I understand because it's generally set outside of the main story and they have time constraints. I would have liked to get more of a feeling that Harry thought he'd definitely be expelled though.

The dementors can fly now? ...why? There just seems no need. It made them less creepy to me as well, something about the idea of them drifting along the ground towards you, emerging from trees etc. is so much scarier. I suppose they wanted them able to attack him during the Quidditch, but that's ridiculous. They come to the Qudditch because they couldn't resist so many people crowded into one place (if my memory serves me correctly), not to specifically go after Harry.

Why have they changed the Patronus into some sort of blasting shield? Even when we finally saw the stag (they didn't even explain that for people who haven't read the books), it didn't charge the dementors down, it just changed into a shield thing again and attacked them in layers. It just seems such a pointless change, like the film makers think they have a better imagination for what looks good than JK Rowling.

Lupin and Snape both turning up at the Shieking Shack seemed really lame if you haven't read the books. There was no explanation, they just turned up. Lupin should have said, "I saw Pettigrew on the map and follwed you here", just a quick line and it makes sense. Snape doesn't need explaning then, he follows Lupin as he's suspicious, we see that in the other timeline thing.

No explanation of why Pettigrew and Sirius can turn into an animagus is given. Would it be so hard to have said that they, along with Harry's father, worked for years on it so they could be with their friend Lupin when he turns into a werewolf, as they could bring him under some degree of control then? It also makes the stag thing mean something and also connects to my next complaint.

When Lupin was leaving, I was just waiting for Harry to say, "Professor, how did you know how to read the map?" and I couldn't believe it when it never came. Not only is it just a bad plot hole (once again for those who haven't read the book), it's just something that should be said. He should tell Harry that he made the map, along with James, Sirius and Pettigrew, and that the names on the map are their nicknames, reflecting their animal forms.

Hermione hitting Malfoy? I don't know. I don't overly like adding scenes like that when they've had to cut so many that are actually in the book, but I guess it's ok. Or would have been if they'd executed it better. I can just, and only just, about get on board with the idea of Malfoy almost crying with Hermione pointing her wand at him, after all he's well aware she's a powerful witch, but running off like that after she hit him? Please! He should have yelled, "You filthy mudblood, I'll get you for that!" and stormed off with his cronies, not run off like a little girl! It was just a stupid scene.

I think that's all that bothered me. It seems like a lot, but I still liked it. Lupin was very good, as was Black, the knight bus was well done and whoever's playing Dumledore now did a great job. I'm not sure I'd have noticed it wasn't the same guy if it wasn't so well known already.

Having never read a single Harry Potter book, I've enjoyed the films more and more with each flick. Prisoner was my favorite, with Chamber a very close 2nd and Stone my least favorite.

Oh you gotta read the books. I don't want to sound like Serafitia here, but they're just magical.

Actually don't read them. Not yet anyway. I think the fourth flm is going to be a lot better for those of us who aren't reading the books than for those of us who are.

Ummm, I think she does hit him in the book, but it's described more like a slap I believe, but I felt the punch was better. I'd hit the kid too, he can't act worth crap.

Yeah, you're right, I forgot. It was a slap though and the scene has been moved around (they weren't overlooking his cottage at Buckbeak's execution or anything), guess I just didn't recognise the scene.

Now now, if we're hitting kids for not being able to act, we'd all be hitting Harry wouldn't we?

SWEDISH PERFECTION
I saw the movie for the first time last week, and just like with both previous movies, I'm sure it'll be better the second time I see it. It's weird how much I must've forgotten from the book, because I didn't even remember them travelling back in time like that. Also, the ending was like a big anti-climax...when I was expecting something big to happen, like Voldemort showing up in any kind of shape, it just - ends. Guess I can't complain if it's faithful to the books though, but we really need the fourth movie NOW! :p

When is it supposed to be finished BTW? Summer 2005?

Wow, you have forgotten a lot from the book!

I don't know when the fimlimg finishes, but I believe it's set to be released November time next year.

In all honesty, I think much of the stuff about the Maruder's Map will likely come into the Fourth book. They may be looking to use Goblet to strengthen the bond between Sirius and Harry for...reasons. I felt that, in the books, their relationship seemed too artificial to me, and maybe having Sirius reveal the map's origin to Harry will work better.

Same with the Stag...Order of Pheonix Spoilers ahead.

The purpose of the Patronus in Azkaban was to ward off the Dementors. In Order, it actually is to fight them off, in small groups. A single stag couldn't have beaten off all those Dementors, so this it would have never worked. In Order, however, I think we'll get to see the Stag in full form, fighting off the Dementors going after Dudley.

Love the film, and generally feel like they edited out, and changed, what was actually needed to makea good movie. The changes they did make were not necessary to the overall story.

But the fourth book is already so huge and they're going to have to take so much out, I don't think they'll have time to bother explaining the map.

I don't see how the dementors flying was better than the ways they were in the books. It's the pointless changes which really piss me off in book-movie adaptations.

"A single stag couldn't have beaten off all those Dementors, so this it would have never worked."

Why not? It did in the book.

Yes, but the crazy flying Dementors made for some AMAZING cinematography (I REALLY want to see that scene in IMAX, actually, when the camera spirals down the column of Dementors).

Yes, the fourth book is huge, but they HAVE to build the Sirius/Harry relationship...if you've read Order, you know why. I would rather they sacrifice some small moments in Goblet to make this important note.

I think they had the Dementors fly to give movie audiences something reminiscent of the Nazgul (they are a pretty blatant ripoff of LOTR by Rowling).

Yeah, I've read Order, but I still don't see the marauder's map being used to bring them together. There are other ways to make the closer, and I think they could even be done almost totally in Order, but the map thing could have been done so easily and quickly when Lupin was leaving.

We'll see if it makes the DVD.

There are practically no "deleted scenes" from Prisoner of Azkhaban because all of the cuts were made at the script level before filming began and they filmed very little extraneous footage . . . so says the director.

Personally, I feel Goblet of Fire the book is so full of unnecessary stuff that they can drop alot and have time for the map stuff somewhere (not sure where it would fit though, just saying time shouldn't be a problem since I think GoF could have used alot of cutting in the book editor's office to begin with). That's my main problem with the Harry Potter books and its fans. They seem more ravenous about stuff being left out than even the LOTR fans, while at the same time the books are so full of side-tracks and unnecessary (though often charming and maybe "neat") elements that there's no way to put them in the film, but everyone whines about it not being there.

I'm pretty sure they filmed the scene with the explanation of the map, but the decision was made to cut it because they felt it worked better in one of the future films or something like that. Anyway, the dementors can "glide" in the books, and I didn't mind the change to them flying.

Everyone complains about shit getting cut out, but I've read the books and thought the pacing on this one was wonderful. I somewhat enjoyed the more languid pace of the first two movies, but they felt like ponderous "epics" while this one seemed like a dazzling serial.
