Yoshida comments on reported PS4 issues

It's not the number that seems weird about this, it's the nature of how they are bricking.

Admittedly, known to in users hands it's a low %.

..but RRoD didn't happen Day 1 for people, it happened over time.

These mostly aren't even bricked upon arrival, but bricking after apparently working.

Seems software related in a lot of cases, or bad HDMI jacks. Saturday will be a shitstorm if this turns out to be a real issue or not... but REAL failure rates won't even be clear until early next year at the earliest.

This is amazing

I don't believe in false optimism and find skepticism healthy, that's all.

If there's like, a dude with a broken PS4 then it'd be fine. When several press sites are reporting that their PS4s broke after a day or two of use? I find that to be a pretty huge red flag!
It's not false optimism. It's working with the information that is in front of me. You're just advertising over reaction with limited information and assumption. I can always adjust my opinion on the matter when more information comes to light instead of sitting here furiously posting about how this could be some kind of disaster.

Could it be a huge problem? Sure. Should there be five threads of people freaking out and worrying that this is a repeat of Red Ring of Death? No, because there isn't any indication of that yet.

Said to be 4000+ consoles out there being used atm.

8 reported defective units...

0.2% defective rate.

PANIC!

Taking the peak ~30% RROD defective rate initially, that's 15000% better!

And where did you come up with the number 8?

There are a lot of people that don't use GAF.. Or talk about their consoles on the interwebs.. If gaming sites are having a problem with review machines, I'd say there may be a problem.

There doesn't seem to be a common thread among these bricked consoles. That's a good thing, isn't it? If it was a common problem among all PS4's, the reports of the bricked consoles would sound very similar to each other.

This suggests that these consoles are just your run-of-the-mill defective units, and their problems aren't inherent of the PS4's design.

Lock if old or not needed.

Be assured we are investigating reported PS4 issues. The number is very small compared to shipped, we believe they are isolated incidents.

Props OP, thank you for actually typing out the tweet because some of us have images blocked at work and I hate the twitter threads that are just a blank OP because I can't see the image. You rock!

In 2007/8? Thats when the console really started hitting the mass market. I dont think so. Besides, there was also youtube.

Edit: Just checked. Facebook was opened up to the public in sept 2006. The RROD wasnt something that seemed to happen straight away, it took a few months in most cases.
What? I'm pretty sure it was brought up in the infamous EGM post-launch interview with Moore. And besides, just because Facebook was open in 2006 means little in this argument; it didn't become the global social media network for several more years. And that's leaving side Twitter, Twitch, and other social media outlets relevant for gaming.

This situation is amplified by the widespread instantaneous dissemination of information brought about in the last 5 or so years since the social media revolution. Pretending otherwise is disingenuous at best. It's far more than our was before.

I found this to be a interesting read

They extended the warranties voluntarily partly because it does seem like they intentionally pushed out marginal units to try and beat Sony.

Actually, it did. A friend of mine had a faulty machine, day 1. He almost when nuts.

It's like 2005 all over again. I remember when the RROD started to appear. People dismissed it just like this. Then it started happening more and more. Suddenly, there was no more "It won't happen to me!"

Having witnessed a PS4 that lasted a day before dying, all I can say is thanks to all the people sucked in by hype and FOMO for beta testing for the rest of us.

There's nothing to talk about here. If there's a follow up, it might be useful information, otherwise it's just another non-story tweet thread. Zzzzz.
