You are in charge of designing the NX and launching it

Slightly modified Wii U gamepad form factor which can work stand alone with sd card for storage. 720p screen - Nvidia Tegra based (maxwell or preferably pascal based) since they do amazing work for $200 Nvidia Shield tablet.

Price point - $200-250

Docking station with hdmi output, usb 3.0 ports to connect external storage. When main console is docked the soc inside goes into higher power mode to make games run at native 1080p.

Price point - $100

Unified handheld and console libraries - Nintendo don't have time to juggle support for two hardware platforms. Certainly have handheld games playable on console, at least.

1080p gaming as standard capable specs.

Uh... that isn't enough, but I have no idea what else.

4 Core Zen CPU, 3TF GPU and 4GB GDDR5(X). New Dual Wiimote. Choice of Zelda or 3D Mario packed in. $299 / £250

A surprisingly beastly little system on similar lines to the Gamecube!

NX Handheld £149 - Little more powerful than a Vita - 1080p Touch Screen.

NX Console with Regular Controller £249 - Between the power of Xbox One and PS4.

NX Handheld + Console Bundle £349.

Both connect together with the Handheld NX working as a touch screen controller, similar to Wii U's game pad.

As a lot of people have a Nintendo console as a second console, keep NX on the cheaper side and try to keep game delays to a minimum, as the price and the pretty long wait for the big games hurt the Wii U in my opinion.

Way ahead of you!

For the Home Console:

A more realistic approach

Stick an i5 2500, GTX 780Ti, 8GB RAM and a 2TB HDD in it. Packaged with a new mature IP from Nintendo and a normal controller. Call it "NX". $350.

Then proceed to agressively publish exclusive 3rd party titles like they did with Bayonetta 2.

A sillier approach

Stick 2 Cell CPUs, GTX 650 Ti, 16GB RAM and a 500GB HDD. Packaged with a port of Super Mario 3D World and a Gamepad 2.0. Call it "Wii Wii Wii". $800.

Then proceed to go under because this was a terrible idea.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
For the Handheld Console:

Make a 3DS, scrap the 3D, beef it up a little to about PS Vita level, have 2 proper analogue sticks. Packaged with Super Mario Galaxy 3. Call it "DS Vita". $200.

Then proceed to just watch the thing just print money.

Sure that may be true for a lot of current Wii U owners, but you need to look beyond the current Wii U audience. This isn't a good deal for the handheld only demographic either and in the broader market beyond current 3DS and Wii U owners (which Nintendo should be aiming for), I question how much overlap there is between the handheld and console audience. Let's break it down.

Handheld only audience: $250 - Because clearly after the disastrous 3DS and Vita launches, 250 is the magic number.
Console only audience: $450 - Like I said before this is a raw deal for an inherently gimped system. a $300 standalone system would outperform it. I'll elaborate on this below.
Hybrid audience: $450 - Not a terrible deal, but I question the size of this audience.

So 2/3 cases it's a bad deal. So if you're happy with the NX being a niche system for a niche audience of Nintendo loyalists, then that's fine, I guess. But if you're chasing growth and growing the audience then this strikes me as a terrible strategy.

To elaborate on the gimped console part. There are 2 major performance issues that can arise from this setup. First, that CPU is going to be a huge bottleneck when docked. Only 4 cores and the tight thermal constraints of the mobile package (that will still exist when docked) will give it only a fraction of the CPU grunt of the other consoles (which are already CPU bottlenecked as it is).

Second the split RAM is problematic. 4GB of dedicated VRAM is fine but only 4GB of main memory is potentially a problem, considering it needs to be shared with the OS. If the OS is a lean 2GB (PS4 and Xbone both reserve 3GB for their OSes btw) then that only leaves only 2GB of main memory, which is way too lopsided. Also due to the physical distance between the CPU to the VRAM, communication between the two will be way too slow (latency wise) to act as an appropriate substitute.

In the end, what you're left with is a system that will probably struggle keep up with the Xbone S (let alone the PS4) and yet cost $150 more. Though sell. A $300 standalone system with an Octocore and and 8GB unified memory would perform much better.

First of all, love your passion. Second, you are spending way too much effort in countering my 30 minutes of mental masturbation. It's just my vision of what a "hybrid" system would have been.

Having said that, $450 for a better graphic power than PS4 console system that can also double as a kick ass handheld (with CPU/GPU of $500+ phones) is a steal IMO. You get two console in one. Don't overlook that.

As for OS, Nintendo was never the one to overdo that part. Also, Android is a kick ass OS and works easily with only 512MB of RAM. I think 4GB of system RAM would be fine. And 4GB of GDDR5 is necessary to keep parity with XBO and PS4. We could also easily do 5GB of DDR4 and 3GB of GDDR5 split as well if you feel that much VRAM is not necessary. But that would start to push the already thin margins of the handheld. Dock at $200 has much more margin breathing room.

This iw what I would do.

System:
- Slightly more powerful than the OG PS4. Similar architecture to the PS4 and X1 to make it as easy as possible to port games.
- Uses a Blu-Ray drive.

Launch price: 300€/$

Controller:
- A standard controller.
- You can link your smartphone to act as a Motion controller. This should be easy to implement.
- For kids and people that want buttons, there could be a WiiMote-like thing.

Features:

- Unified store and account with NX Handheld, which means games are crossbuy. Like in Android Play Store, when you are going to buy a game you can see the platform the game is available.
- Miiverse stays with expanded features, social media integration, video streaming and that kind of stuff.
- Your VC games carry over. It should be able to emulate everything both the 3DS and WiiU have.
- Remote Play with the NX handheld.

Launch games:

- Zelda
- Super Mario Maker port, with expanded DLC plans and support. New Nintendo made levels.
- Splatoon and Smash ports. People who register the games in MyNintendo on the first 1-2 months after NX launch get a 25% discount on the digital version of Smash 5 and Splatoon 2. Cross-play.
- As many 3rd party games as possible, signing some deals with both Japanese and Western publishers. Monster Hunter, Tekken, Overwatch (with Nintendo IP-themed skins!), Final Fantasy XV, the yearly sport games, Call of Duty and as much as they can get. Some for launch, some for the first year.
- One "prestige project", like funding a Beyond Good and Evil sequel. People that register the game on MyNintendo get the original game for free.
- A healthy first party line-up since launch up to August, combining new NX games with remasters of Wii/WiiU critically aclaimed games. Having a marketing deal or two could work.
- Drop some bombs at E3 that will launch in September 2017 and beyond.

Others:

- Unreal Engine 4 and Unity support since launch. Nintendo has been sending engineers and giving helping publishers to have their engines ready for the U.
- Free dev kits for selected indies and different fund programs (one for lifetime exclusivity, another with a 3-6 months exclusivity window).

I wouldn't really mind opening the "warchest" or however people call it in order to guarantee more support, really. Publishers this day love signing "marketing deals" with hadware manufacturers. Nintendo needs to start fighting Sony and Microsoft following the industry terms, not their own, while still doing what people expect from them in terms of first party support. And while I can't imagine them having marketing deals with games like Call of Duty and GTA, I wouldn't see as weird if the NX logo appeared at the end of an Overwatch, Destiny, Mass Effect or Final Fantasy ad.

Just build a Jaguar/Polaris SOC system that can handle PS4 ports and give away the whole SNES first party library preloaded. It will print money.

- Fund/buy 6-7 western studios.
- Bring online to a comparable level without an online fee.
- Most powerful console @ time of release
- Show 3rd parties that you have fund western studios to gather to non-nintendo gamers
- Try to get some 3rd party and indie exclusives for the first year to show everyone you are serious this time
- Show people big parts of your exclusive line-up for the first year before launch
- Release @ end of 2018 with a mario game and 2 of those western titles around the launch period

Polaris 11, coupled with a CPU that isn't complete dogshit (I'm looking at you, Jaguar) so you avoid bottlenecks. x86 or ARM, both a powerful enough and well-enough supported to be easy for developers to work with.

8GB RAM available to games, with some other amount fenced off for the OS.

Espresso included, used purely to run the OS and background processes in NX mode, but also allows for Wii/WiiU BC.

Launch with Legend of Zelda All-Stars (remakes of Zelda 1, 2, ALTTP, and Link's Awakening) and Breath of The Wild, backed up with unique third-party titles funded by Nintendo.

Free to play online, including voice chat, party chat, Miiverse etc. However if you pay a monthly subscription, you can access the Super Virtual Console, which has every key title from every Nintendo and Sega console ever made from day 1, with other machines being added later (MSX, Commodore 64, Spectrum, Amiga etc).

1TB internal hard drive, but upgradeable.

Controller is similar to Pro controller, with similar battery life. However, has scrolly shoulder buttons and analogue triggers.

£299.

At least XBox One performance.

x86, because all consoles and PC are x86.

If motion controls again, than something like the Vive controllers but with analog sticks. But would prefer a normal controller.

First party titles of every genre. Adventure, Jump n run, FPS,TPS, WRPG, JRPG, RTS, racing sim and racing arcade style, etc. And of course everything with great quality.

399.- max.

Make it cheap to make and port 3rd party games.

One things for sure, if any of the designers on my team suggested numerous peripherals with wires again I'd slap them on the back of the head. Can't be doing with that again.

There is no victory for Nintendo because gaming in Japan is dying. The home consoles keep having less and less relevance. It's going in a wrong direction, and making a TV set-op box does't make sense.

What is more, the games Nintendo makes are limited and less because of the hardware restrictions. Zelda is not aided by the Wii U, only hindered. It would have been a million times better had it been made for PS4 and Xbox One.

I'd make NX a mix between a 3DS and a Wii U controller. It would come with a 1080p Igzo display for maximum energy saving. It would feature a headphone jack and a USB-C connector.

The USBC would connect to a small Apple TV sized Hub that comes with the controller. The little hub is attached to the TV, has a lan port, USBC, and a 2,5 inch HDD/SSD storage bay that can be upgraded.
You can either charge, or play off battery with the long cable.

The little hub would be the locally stored content you have, movies, music, games, everything digital you buy. I'd be a way to upgrade the firmware and to stream.

The NX device itself would improve on the Wii U controllers ergonomics, and have the power of the Wii U within the little enclousure. Giving you a Wii U experience anywhere, with a good controller support that goes beyond what you'd find on normal handhelds.
Thanks to Igzo the battery would last a long time. It would use a ultra low wattage type chip, like those ultrabooks that can last 12-15 hours. They'd make it aim for 8-10 hours of full use, with a GPU switching technology that would let the GPU shut off when not gaming.

The idea is simple; Take the Wii U controller idea and go all the way. the controller ergonomics put it in a category that normal handhelds and tablets cannot compete with, and having the Wii U power in such a small screen real estate would make games look incredible. For then being able to have the fatest Bluetooth technology for local wireless play, playing with others locally could become a big thing.

The device should have a sim-slot allowing you to buy a extra slim slot from your phone carriers data plan. So I have a 8 GB Data plan with my iphone. getting a extra shared nano sim is like 5 dollars a month added to my subscription. I can then take that nano sim, put it in the NX and have a 4G wireless handheld gaming console with me anywhere.
The device wouldn't be small. It wouldn't be something that fits in your backpocket. The display would be the same physical size as an entire iphone 6 plus. The size of the display would allow you to do things with it, productivity wise.

And the device should run a custom vanilla version of android. I'd make sure it would be silky smooth, have none of that loaded shovelware crap that is on samsung phones. It would have smooth animations, fast load times, have a minimalistic look, but still allow you to customize it.
When streaming to the hub attached to your TV, you can play full screen NX like a regular console.

Wii U is a fantastic idea. What faults it has is limited to power, quality, components, speed, battery life, ergonomics. But the idea is fantastic. I look at the Wii U controller, and I imagine what it would be like if this thing had the battery and the power and the customization and the capabillities beyond games to be something I would put in my bag and walk around with.

Making games for a small screen makes more sense if you're not in it for specs. And Nintendo is not in it for specs. But at the same time we all love Nintendos home console franchises. If you can get the Wii U power into a handheld, and have a handheld with the controller ergonomics of a real home console controller, like the Wii Pro controller build into the device, or sort of like the Wii U controller, you can have a lot more complex games than the current 3DS and tablets offer. Real 3D games, with two great analog sticks. A big meaty display to really make it nice to view video content on and browse while in bed.
I don't want NX to be a half hearted competitor to MS and Sony. That is pointless. There is nothing to gain here. Japanese home console gaming is shutting down in Japan.

I don't play games on my Ipad Air because I hate the controls. I dont have a 3DS because the controls and the scopes of the games is not what I want.
Zelda BoTW style experiences inside the handheld. That level of graphics into a sharp 7-8 inch 1080p display. That would be incredible. A open world 3d Pokemon adventure game with that sort of visual fidelity would be incredible.

Between PS4 and X1 power level, shared library of games with a future portable NX, bundled with a remastered version of splatoon that is cross-platform with Wii U version. Priced 299$.

-Regular controller, something along the lines of the DS4 (I'm not into the xbox one);
-Not the best hardware, but something that would be a little above the current PS4, and x86
-Stellar surprising launch games: SMT V, ME Andromeda, Zelda BOTW & MG Rising 2.

Whatever specs to get it to be able to be sold at $250.

Ship with pro controller with gyro and scroll wheels.

Bundle every console with either a new casual title, or Zelda. Every console, no exceptions.

Edit: You just need consoles sold out the gate really fast at launch. Just make it an attractive buy to the largest amount of people as possible. "Low" spec is fine if a ton of people buy it at once cuz it comes with zelda or a new way to play innovative experience. People will think its the new hotness and check it out like PS4 and Wii and PS2. The general population doesnt do research on 3rd parties and spec/performance. They want what their friends have and everyone's talking about.

I would try to make it as dope as possible tbh

Or what he said.

PS4 or slightly above power. 1 TB hard drive.

$250 launch price.

Traditional controller.

Pairs up with the NX handheld for second screen support in games and Wii U BC (Wii U game pad also supported for those who have one).

Zelda, Luigi's Mansion 2 and Pikmin 4 as first party launch titles, along with ports of Smash Bros Wii U and Splatoon. Along side some key third party ports like EA sports games, ME Andromeda, CoD Infinite War etc.

Have strong first year slate of titles with release dates. New 3D Mario, Retros game, maybe Mario Kart 9 if possible etc.

Slightly more powerful than PS4/XB1
3rd parties help design it
Full Wii U/3ds backwards compatibility
Has a tablet you take with you that replaces the 3ds
Completely rebuilt onine UI
Launches with massive 3rd party support including Bethesda, Ubi, EA.
All the indie support you could imagine
Launch with Zelda, Metroid, Pokemon NX, 3D Mario, Super Mario 64 Remake in 2017

I'm following Nintendo's plan and add a "not my problem" Reggie picture in each box.

A lot of people would be pissed (some people are always pissed anyway) and GAF will go crazy. I'll have fun playing Zelda and reading the drama on the web.

- Make the console's power relative to the PS4 Neo and Xbox's Project Scorpio

- Drop the family market as the "Core" market and focus on making games for the REAL core audience by going full force on games that are currently in-style (Think new God of War, Uncharted and Elder Scrolls)

- Get Major third party developers on board: EA, Ubi, Bethesda, Square Enix.

- Make Virtual Console a subscription service and load up the entire history first party (Nintendo made games) for the service. Add third party titles as necessary.

- Make the NX backwards compatible with the Wii/Wii U.

- Invest in the best console online infrastructure. Hire someone like Cerny to take over console development.

- Launches Spring 2017 @ $399

- Launch titles Include: Zelda: BotW, Smash NX (Wii U Port), Mario Kart 8, COD: Infinite Warfare (with MW included), Ghost Recon, Steep, Final Fantasy XV, Madden 17, Fifa 17, BF1 and Titanfall 2

Future Strategies:
Develop the next evolutions of the 3DS to include NX functionality.

Polaris 11 + Zen CPU with 8 cores. This is the handheld. The handheld operating in handheld mode runs this spec. The rest of the console is basically a GPU-addon with disctray and usb ports hosting another Polaris 11 GPU.
That's it. When the handheld is connected to the main console, it operates in crossfire mode.

Cost: 200 $ for handheld, 100 $ for base.

Console would be a 30cm wide red and white Nintento logo, extruded backwards by the same amount. It would be digital only, include cross-buy with a handheld variant that ran the same compiled games but at a lower resolution, and be as powerful as PS Neo.

The 'I' in Nintendo would be the power button. The 'o' would have the indicator light in the middle. USB slots would be across the bottom of the logo's surround.

A daring design! The entire face of your console is your company logo. Console is simply called the 'Nintendo Console (2016)' or some such.

60 million 3ds owners
12 million wiiU owners.

The WiiU owners are loyal and many will buy day 1, so your going after the 3ds and casuals.

Arm CPU / Tegra X1, close to xb1 power level, 9 inch tablet / controller that can be attached or separate, docking station with hard drive and hdmi out.

Hand held $ 250
Docking station or SCD $ 100
Use pro controller when docked....

2 products, 1 platform.

When is a hybrid not a hybrid ?

Nintendo Home

Would be a 4k capable gaming machine.
standard controller

Looks - like a small pc tower mixed with GameCube design. Has gamecube controller slots built in for smash.

- all previous controllers are compatible

- can be upgraded

New OS that is a game itself. ie Mitomo. All your achievements, trophies, games etc are displayed in a virtual enviroment.etc. Users can buy items to personalize there environment or buy them using points. Can switch to classic style OS if preferred.

Hook - All games from from NES - SNES - 64 era are available to play once you buy the console.

All gc, wii, WiiU and NX games can be bought and added to your account.

launch games

Zelda Breath of the wild

Donkey kong country NX - 3d platformer like uncharted. DK can now climb, swing on vines, has grenades as well as banana's to defeat enemies. All the weapons from dk 64 as well. Has a multiplayer mode similar dk64 that can be played online.

Mario Kart 8 Ultra edition - comes with all the dlc and new battle mode.
This sounds amazing. Would buy. Day -64

It'll be the most powerful machine to date.
Ships with Super Mario War, a Mario FPS focused on multiplayer online and with a crappy campaign mode. It has coop. Enable Blood option will be available as DLC. Other characters will be available as DLC. Actually 60% of the game will be DLC, but it's Nintendo so fuck it, fans will get it anyway.

It will also support Nintendo VR (wich costs more than the console itself).

IT WILL SUPPORT AMIIBOS

-- Graphics on par with the PS4 and XB1
-- Solid online infrastructure (no friend code shit, ever)
-- A sleek, minimalist design
-- No. Gimmicks.
-- Backwards compatibility with Wii-U games/devices
-- DVD/Bluray movie support
-- Affordable price

In short, Nintendo needs to quit trying to be the little unique snowflake and actually try direct competition with Xbox and PlayStation. Providing a system that's on par with the XB1 and PS4 will make it easier for third parties to jump on board, and a solid third party library + the always solid first party library Nintendo provides would be a pretty respectable one-two punch that would likely translate into sales.

Nintendo NX $399 with Nintendoland 2 (March 24th 2017)
Nintendo NX handheld $199 with Nintendoland 2 (March 24th 2017)

CPU A72 8 core @ 2.5GHz (over 50% faster than XB1's CPU)
GPU RX 470 @ 1GHz (4.1TFLOPs)
RAM 8GB LPDDR4 (256bit bandwidth)
Storage 128GB SSD with USB 3.0 and SDXC support for expanded hard drive space.
Media Up to 64GB (at launch) Game Carts with fast enough read speed to not have to install games to the system. Compatible with the NX Handheld.

Controller with gyros, similar to Wii U pro controller but wider, with possibly a 5 inch screen. NX Handheld would work as a controller.

Zelda BotW would run 4k 60fps, Nintendo would have many titles available in 4K and the handheld would run the same games in qHD (540p same as vita) but would be roughly twice as powerful as Wii U.

Launch Lineup:
Zelda Breath of the Wild (4k 60fps)
Luigi's Mansion 3
Pikmin 4
Dragon Quest 11
Beyond Good & Evil 2
Mario Maker NX (4k 60fps)
Smash 4 NX (adding 3DS content and remaining previous roster including Snake) (4k 60fps)
Nintendoland 2 (amiibo expanded game)
Monster Hunter 5
Retro's game
2D Metroid game (4k 60fps)
WarioWare title
Splatoon
F-Zero NX
Resident Evil 7
For Honor
Sniper Elite 4
Mass Effect Andromeda
Tales of Berseria
-other 3rd party stuff-

among other games, I'd highlight at least 1 game a month throughout 2017:
Mario Golf (April)
Mario Kart 9 (May)
Art Academy (June)
Wave Race NX (July)
Hyrule Warriors 2 (August)
Animal Crossing NX (September)
Pokemon Sun & Moon 2 (October)
3D Mario Adventure (Holiday)

E3 2017 would showcase 2018 games as well, including:
Metroid Prime 4
Kirby NX
Battalion Wars NX
Xenoblade 3
Bayonetta 3
Kid Icarus NX
