Your biggest disappointment this generation?

Gameboy Advanced, Gameboy Advanced Service Pack, and also ass rape price on GBAm.

It just smacks of Nintendo's blatant abuse of their absolute control of portable gaming. Back before the PSP was released, Nintendo chose to release the new Gameboy hardware with a screen nearly impossible to see under normal lighting conditions.

Then they released the GBAsp since that Portable Monopoly site fellow was stealing money from their pockets selling that GBA modding kit. Only it's Nintendo, so they couldn't do it right. Noooo - we're going to front light the fucking thing. The end product was slightly better than that original GBA but still had visibility issues in certain lighting conditions.

Now, the GBA Micro is just Nintendo bending you over and raping you in the shitter, while you toss Yamauchi's salad. "We're Nintendo and you morons will pay through the nose for our shit!"

At the end of the day, as much as I fucking hate it - the NintenD00DS is the portable should have released on day one. Granted, the lack of GB game support leaves me with no Tetris to play (FUCK YOU NOT BUYING GOD DAMNED TETRIS AGAIN!), but at the very least you can see the god damned screen. >:|

Silent Hill 2 also ranks up there with abysmal failures this generation. The game wasn't as enjoyable as the first, and the story didn't keep me guessing. I was also hoping the team would do more interesting things with the fog in the game. Sure the fog was a hardware limitation of the PS in the original game, but it was a huge portion of the atmosphere. I would have loved to just be able to see random things in the fog on a next generation Silent Hill. Nah - now the team is too wrapped up in making Top 40 sounding music to make a good game. >:|

The death of Xbox Nation.

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II

The Dreamcast's premature demise.

The insane rush to the next generation.

The dearth of decent wrestling titles on Xbox.

Grand Theft Auto clones.

The Urbz.

The trend toward "mature" titles, given that "mature" as it applies to video games generally means boobies and ass.

Oh, and Silent Hill IV.

MGS 2 (retarded story, stupid characters)
Final Fantasy X (only one I played this gen... wow) FF XII doesn't look better.
Nintendo (another generation of sucking ass) GC Console sucked, controller sucked, most of the software sucked, and connectivity.
Dreamcast died too young
Starfox

Console Online gaming

-People bitching about Nintedo's lack of it, when a BBA was avialable and SEGA has no issues using it

-Online with a ps2 is a hassle 9 times out of 10

-M$ charges for a matchmaking service and buddy list, not mention "premium content" and games are full of hick s and screaming kids yelling for chocolate milk.

Other gripes:

GTA 3 was good but the rest is more of the same, there is NO reason it should be as big as it is.

Gamecube being used as a scapegoat this generation, easy way for delevopers to justify crap sales and dump support, even though a port is 6 months late and graphically inferior.

Clancy Games.

Never played much of Starfox Adventures, and haven't heard great things from Assualt - but do either atleast have the cool music?

Both have really great music... it's one part of both games that is actually great.

Star Ocean 3 didn't live up to the rest of the series
Squaresoft - where were they this gen?
Suikoden series going downhill
SEGA's fall from grace (though Panzer Dragoon Orta, Outrun 2, and others were pretty good)
Too many "mature" and "gangsta" games
EA Domination
Japanese game industry in decline
Too much consolidation of companies

Disco Stu is a wise man. And I realize now that Xbox Nation was the only gaming magazine this gen I sincerely enjoyed reading.

Even though I've come to appreciate it in some ways, Super Mario Sunshine is the single most dissapointing Mario Game in a generation. It misses the mark. And I think rather than complain about how Nintendo has missed a lot of marks this gen, I'd just say that the feeling they've specialized in this gen is summed up by Super Mario Sunshine.

As much as I love online gaming, and as much as the Xbox has done to make it better on consoles, I'm dissapointed that I'm probably going to have to wait till next gen for the Japanese developers to truly bring their imagination and uniqueness to the genre much the way they've done in single player games. Then I think it will have the diversity to not only suit my every mood, but bring a whole bunch of other gamers on board as well.

The Star Fox Franchise being dragged through the mud twice.
That would definatly be my biggest disappointment too. Lylat wars was one of my favourite games for N64, so i was expecting big things from starfox assault and starfox adventures. Both turned out to be crap.

IcoII and ZoE3 are also big disappointments, but maybe both of those games are being developed for next gen consoles.

Nintendo ahve also been disappointing on several occasions, the main one being no online support for home consoles. The potential was huge with the franchises they have, sop many people would die for SSB online or Mario kart online, but instead of focusing on a good online plan, they gave us connectivity, which wasnt all too bad, but it was just another gimmick and nothing as good as online games could have been. Again, this is something Nintendo said that they would do next gen so its not a huge disappointment, its just a shame it didnt come earlier.

Super Mario Sunshine and if it counts Deus Ex: IW. Fucking xbox screwd it and Thief (althoug thief is still good just as good as the first 2)

The delay of Zelda until next year was honestly a pretty big disappointment for me, although I'm over it now.

Not enough time to play all the games I want to is another. :(

Sunshine ROCKS.. its the BEST platformer out there...

its a 'pure' platforming game.. Jak and Daxter and the others just don't even compete

Phsychonauts is nice, but still its too deep for a platformer

About games, no doubt FFTA. FFT is one of my absolute games ever, FFTA is a bad joke. A dumped down system, with a nonexisting storyline and uncharismatic characters. It was so lame that it hurts even now.

About more general things.
The increase or boom of war based/FPS/Squad based/Clancy games.
The addition of PC kind of gaming to consoles.
Xbox succeding based on the previous points I really hate.
Videogames going mainstream more than ever. Jewels such as Beyond Good and Evil selling crap, while Matrix sells millions.
EA domination based on marketing.
This whole generation has been a disappointment by itself.

Yeah that would have to be mine as well. So sad.

A close second would be the absolute insane success of the GTA franchise this gen. Fun games but I lose interest after about an hour or so.

No game will ever be further from my expectations (Spaceworld 2000, when developer wasn't even known) than Metroid Prime was.

Square
Nintendo
Sega (if you don't count Dreamcast)
Rare

But I liked:

Blizzard
Insomniac Games
Whoever did God of War (some Sony dev)
Fable

So, did you win your $500.000 ?

:lol

I definitely forgot about the demise of the Dreamcast. A terrific machine that couldn't get the time of day, well, except for the first few months in America.

Platformers are almost flatlined, help up barely by GTA copycats with platforming elements. I expect them to be done in general next gen. Especially since it seems Mario 128 is going in a new direction.

Too much sequels. Sequelitis has happened in all generations but now we are seeing 2 or 3 releases of the same game. Its really bad now and I expect it can only get worse the next generation.

Nintendo didn't step up like they said they would. Their GC support was good but they didn't learn their lesson like they so claimed. No Mario Kart online for GC, the connectivity bullshit, multiple GBAs, etc. I'm sure it brings in money for them but I don't give a shit about Nintendo's profit margins like some here do.

What the hell is up with the war based FPS? Nobody took it in interesting directions. Its either a war or sometime in the future.

I meant this generation if you want to correct me please go ahead.

I'll admit that the Nintendo quality of years before might have slipped with regards to this generation but you still can't tell me that every game they've released sucks and that at least one of them isn't good.

A bunch.

The downfall of Square
The downfall of Sega
The downfall of SNK
Super Mario Sunshine
Jet Set Radio Future
No original Mario for GBA
The general movement towards more complicated, cinematic games

Pleasant suprises were the success of DDR, the Advance Wars series, XBox Live, Pikmin series, low priced software, very faily priced retro compilations, etc.

I really didn't like this generation. But, this is the same gen I've started to grow up and become less interested in an escapism hobby.

yep they done fucked up.

Back in the day it was nintendo losing RARE but it really doesn't matter now atall because they still haven't released a good game.

I was saying how rare havent released a good game, although nintendo has been bad but thats only compared to the n64, i know i for one was just expecting more A+ titles and zelda coming out for next year means i aint gonna be buying another nintendo game this year.

I think by this time next year the rampant Square disappointment on this board will be lessened quite a bit; no other publisher has an upcoming lineup even half as fantastic as Square's.

My disappointments:

Fear Effect 3 cancellation
Fable suckage
Complete lack of RPG's on the Xbox
Super Mario Sunshine mediocrity
Ratchet & Clank sequel repetition
Not as much genre diversity from Square (will hopefully change next gen)

Square not as prolific as last gen.

This man speaks the truth. Square last generation game for game was the best Developer hands down IMO. It seems as though they were putting out a classic every couple of months, it was insane. They've had some good games this generation, but you can tell that the "Enix Side" of the company is pulling the strings.

As far an actual game being a disappointment it has to be Fable. Initially this was one of my most anticpated games of all time, then several months pre-release I lost interest after it was revealed after months of no new info that so much had been cut. However, the game once again grabbed my interest pre-release(who can corget IGN's "Greatest Preview Ever")..I get the game, and 16 game hours later I'm trading the S.O.B. back to EB for store credit.

Front Mission 4.

I loved the crap out of FM3. One of my all time favorites. I was so excited to finally get my hands on the FM4 demo, after all those long years waiting.
And then. Well. What can I say? The graphics somehow failed to improve from the PS1 to the PS2. The gameplay was stale. Something was just off about the whole thing. So now I wait for FM5, and hope the series returns to glory.

mario sunshine. ead haven't recovered either. there's a lot resting on twlight princess.

Square post Enix merger. Even though others were able to more than pick up the slack.

While Nintendo as a whole was not dissapointing for me this generation, NOA most definitely is. Everything from their Donkey Konga songlists to their refusal to bring NPC or Mother 1 + 2 over here. Personally, I felt that Wind Waker was brilliant. Although it was rushed and had the horrible, horrible Triforce hunt, I still felt that it was an excellent game. Mainly for different reasons than why I came to love the Zelda series in the first place.

And the biggest dissapointment this generation is most definitely the Dreamcast and in a sense, Sega's untimely demise. Absolutely crushing.
