Your biggest disappointment this generation?

The only disappointing things for me are SEGAs demise and the extreme degree of Sony dominance. Who will bring balance to the force?

This generation I've bought more consoles and games than ever before, and been happy with all of them.

I agree, I really dislike Sony's dominance on the gaming genre, since its not really them who helped make the public forget what an NES is.

I guess it comes down to the fact that the GCN's discs only hold 1.5 GB compared to 7-10 GB, because its a really damned interesting machine. I think they should've made the GCN cases like the small japanese ones instead of large DVD cases to help increase the fact the system is VERY portable. Small memory cards, small games you can take with you anywhere for parties. Plus they barely advertised the Game Boy Player, another grim mistake in my opinion. They could've also done better at trying to capitalize on the complimations like Sonic Mega Collection and Mega Man Anniversary Collection. Plus those Hori Digital Controllers would've made excellent companions.

I as many are sad about Sega's reducement to 3rd party, but since it brought Sonic and other Sega properties to Nintendo, it made one of my dreams come true. Then theres F-Zero GX, their first collaboration together. Now to wait for N. Vs. S. Smash Bros. or something.

Like many, the premature death of the Dreamcast still gets me. I remember the day the news came out that they were halting production...very sad indeed. Know I overreacted that day, but I felt like I'd never play games again.

The continued dominance of EA & Sony. Sony doesn't bother me nearly as much as they used to, but EA with their NFL monopoly really chaps my hide.

A tie between Mario Sunshine and Wind Waker. I bought a GC for those two games and Metroid Prime. 1 out of 3 is not good. :P

The death of Final Fantasy as we knew it. I used to love these games.

If you don't mind the generalization, Japanese developers have been pretty dissapointing this generation IMO.

Square, falling so low..

Yes...yes...yes...yes, and yes.

But kind of a no on the "Japanese have been dissapointing" bit.

No Sega Rally 3

No Jetforce Gemini

No Super Mario 64 sequel

No Pilot Wings sequel

Buffy Chaos Bleeds-such mediocrity.

Sega going with Walmart hardware for their arcades nowdays.

Seeing VectorMan coming along porrly then being cancelled.

SpikeOut-I guess I expected too much but the play mechanic don't measure up for me nowdays.

Virtua Cop 3 never making a home release

Sega not bringing a better looking VF4 over to the Xbox with extras included.

Tomb Raider Angle of Darkness(or whatever its name was.)

No sequels to Cannon Spike,Enclave,Draconus Cult of the Wrym.

Jet Grind Radio Future-where its mechanics were altered and not quite so adrenalinish as JSR were. I appreciate the platformer like exploration feel that the sequel had but I missed the hectic pace that the original had.

Multitude of GTA clones.

EA's huge rise in popularity this gen.

Mario Sunshine and Wind Waker. I SERIOUSLY hope you learned from these mistakes, Nintendo.

Square, post-FFX. They just don't even care anymore.

Yeah, Halo 2 for me - as well.

Also, no new Panzer Dragoon RPG.

Super Mario Sunshine: broken swimming controls, boring levels, FLUDD, blue coins. The sub-worlds were cool, though.

A lot of good ones have been named so far. The mangling of Star Fox was crushing. Sega's decline is truly sad; Sonic games are now equatible to smelly garbage. Though I did enjoy it, Wind Waker was a big disappointment for me, not for the art style but because of all the sailing and the fact it was obviously rushed so much they cut two dungeons. It was kinda a bummer when Nintendo sold Rare but I got over it pretty quick, only to be bummed out again by the fact they did doodely squat for the X-Box. (Though the upside is eventually getting the Rare goodness on the 360)

What really got me down this generation is the decline in the durability of consoles & controllers. My GameCube broke down altogether and had to be replaced, while my controllers are all now in janky condition. My X-Box shuts down for no apparent reason - VERY ANNOYING. And while I don't own a PS2 yet, I can name 4 of my friends off the top of my head who have had their systems break down in one way or another. Systems and controllers just don't seem to last like they used to and it sucks. What happened to the good ol' days when you could chuck a controller across the room in a fit of rage and NOT have it break? Ah, memories.

But the biggest let down IMO? Sin & Punishment never materializing in North America. There were rumors it would come to GC in the states, but even on the N64 it woulda been great. Nintendo did pimp it a little bit, then NOTHING. That game rules. Hopefully, it will be available as a download on Revolution someday.

GTA III - This execution of this and subsequent mission packs feel awkward and broken to me, which is too bad because I think it's a fantastic idea from a design standpoint. I want to love it.

Super Mario Sunshine - A game that could've used at least another six months of polish. The dedicated platforming stages are as good as, if not better than, anything in Super Mario 64, IMO. I'd kill to see Mario 128 embrace this direction in a big way. The rest of the game was messy.

Wind Waker - Too easy, too short, and downright tedious for long periods of time. I loved the look and the new items, but it, unlike virtually every other proper Zelda, felt like much less than the sum of its parts.

I guess that's why this has been my least favorite console gen to date: the "next big things" didn't grab me, and my favorite Nintendo franchises - Mario, Mario Kart, Metroid, Starfox, Zelda - were all the low points in the respective series. Not to mention that Castlevania, Contra and Metal Slug are all dead on consoles. :(

Wind Waker.

I didn't mind the artstyle. In fact, the original video with Link swinging from a chandelier ALONE sold me 100% on the Gamecube. The actual game wasn't bad per se, but coming out after Majora's Mask and being the true sequel to Ocarina of Time, how could anyone NOT be disappointed? Short on dungeons. Sailing controls. Nothing new in terms of puzzle design. Triforce fetch quest which the producer apologized for. Terrible ending dungeon.
Here, fight those four bosses again. IN BLACK AND WHITE SO IT SEEMS SIGNIFICANT.
The preorder bonus (Master Quest) was the best part of Wind Waker IMO.

4 Swords Adventure sucked too. Hopefully Twilight Princess is as good as it sounds.

hmmm my top 3 would go liker this

1. Square, I don't know what happened to them they were my boys during every past Generation, they just seemed to drop the ball this gen, and they finally give me a musashi sequal and it sucks :(

2. The Xbox would be next, was a big waste of a system for me, very few system exclusives that did anything for me, sorry I just don't car about more war FPS, and their complete BS of an online system, please can I pay you money for a P2P match making service that you use my bandwidth to host the games and I get the same experience on the PC for free, please won't you let me pay for it pleasssseeeeeee

3. Sega, between the early death of the dreamcast and what theyve been putting out just has me really dissapointed with them, stop making 3D sonic games they just get worse and worse with each one, why did you let them release that travisty known as Toe Jam n Earl III (god the first game was so good and this was sooo bad)

The characters were sort of boring, the "real-time" combat was beyond basic, the storyline was ok, but not great, and overall when I finished the game I just didn't feel that it was a AAA RPG that it could have been.

That may be why I haven't finished it yet. I don't feel that drive like when I play a AAA game like Splinter Cell or Prince of Persia: SOT or Resident Evil 4 (well, no game comes close to RE4 actually).

I agree. I don't know a single GameCube owner who has four controllers.

I've got 3. In fact, most people I know with Gamecubes have 3 (two regular ones and a Wavebird.)

And if you're playing a game with someone, why wouldn't they bring over their controllers as well?

i don't get these complaints at all. the japanese n64 release of sin and punishment has english dialogue, it costs about what it did at release, and playing imports on an n64 is trivial. so import already! it's not too late, and it's entirely worthwhile! at least you didn't ask for a *shudder* ds version.

The PS2 HDD.

What an expensive waste. It takes forever for it to be released, then comes out to be only utilized by a handful of games, and Sony then redesigns the PS2 so it's impossible to use with it. Thanks!

Last Generation:

-Nintendo. I'm sure I'll get lots of "WUT?!?! 64 ROCKED DOOD U AR TEH SUKK!1111" type responses for this, but last gen is when Nintendo went from having the best systems and first party games to mediocre/crap IMO. I did not like the N64 and I did not like most of the games they made in 3D. I vastly prefer Nintendo's 2D titles to their 3D titles. Mario 64 was easily the biggest let down for me; it was the first Mario game that I didn't really like. Gameboy Color was also largely a disappointment. Thankfully, the Gameboy Advance rocked, and the Game Cube was far better than the N64, although over the last two years, it has started to go the way of the N64.

This Generation:

-Metal Gear Solid 2. I was so incredibly hyped up for this game after seeing the trailer at E3 2001. The demo with ZOE was awesome. Then I get the game, and after completing the tanker chapter, it turns into a suckfest of a game with bland level design, a stupid-looking effeminate (sp) main character, and a story that makes little sense. MGS3 turned out much better, but I still like the original Metal Gear Solid the best.

-Sega. Dreamcast rocked, but after it died, the company just wasn't the same. There have been some good/great titles released since then (JSRF, VF4, Outrun 2, PSO, etc), but far more crap. They seem to be going back to making good games again based on their upcoming arcade line-up, but there's still crap like Shadow The Hedgehog. :P

ーPS2 Hard drive. It’s already been covered a few posts up. Complete waste of money, and the newer PS2 doesn't even have support for it.

1. Halo 2 single player story.

After reading the Nyland books, i was looking forward to it being so much better. I had my head in my hands when it went all "Little Shop of Horrors".

2. The Sega Ages collection.

Well, in particular the remake of Space Harrier. A good idea that didn't quite turn out as planned.

3. Mario Tennis.

Should hve been so so much better. Not enough added, and what was added was mostly trash.

He does have Sin and Punishment. He's complaining that it didn't get a domestic release to that more people could enjoy it: especially the way NOA was beginning to pimp it out... Not just the hardcore GAF-contingent, who "know" about these things.

Biggest single disappointment this generation? It should be fairly obvious.

Outside of that tragedy here's a few others:

-BOFV: Dragon Quarter selling so poorly that the Development team issue an apology for the greatest game this generation.

-BOFV team subsequently making the terrible terrible MMX: Command Mission after their previous gem. Argle bargle.

-Square merging with Enix. Poor Enix. Got the short end of the stick. Sigh.

-We get a goddamn remake of MGS and not Grandia for GameCube? Arrrghahghahghahgh.

-Five year lifecycle WHERE? (Sony, you're exempt.)

-Bilinear filtering on DS. And a proper Z-buffer. WTF Nintendo? It wouldn't have cost much to implement, and would have made the N64/PSX-leve polys quite palatable, since you've gone all out for fps this time.

-GBA goddamn 8-bit sound output when it fucking mixes internally at 16-bit. Pennies a unit! PENNIES A GODDAMNED UNIT NINTENDO!

-GBA screen. <Nintendo> OH SHIT WE FUCKED UP. *Releases GBA SP*

-Nintendo sucking total unadulterated ass in terms of software output. (Intelligent Systems and R&D1: you're both exempt. I could never hate either of you. <3 <3 <3 <3 <3)

-Sega. What happened to you after the Death of the DC? Terrrrible.

-PS2 hardware builds (up until the PStwo slim model). WHY HALLO THAR. I AM A PS2. BREATHE ON ME AND I SYSTEMATICALLY SELF-DESTRUCT! PS: GO BUY ANOTHER ONE!

-Twilight Princess' art style (Note: not complaining about gameplay. Should be solid). OH NO PEOPLE HAVE BEEN EMASCULATED BY CUTE LITTLE CEL-SHADED BOY WE MUST BE ZOMG MATOOR. Never have I been so underwhelmed by the presentation of a Zelda title.

edit: remembered one more and I can't believe I forgot it

-NOA being stupid dicks and not releasing games people want and would sell, specially when they have massive dry spells. Stafy trilogy, Daigasso Band Bros., Magical Vacation, Fire Emblem 6 etc.

WTF, it's only 5 freakin' months old! I can understand being underwhelmed so far, but at least give the machine a good year or so before claiming it a disappointment.

Xenosaga Ep II
This I agree on however. I too was expecting/hoping for a lot more. Here's hoping Episode III returns to the greatness of I. Oh, and that it actually furthers the main plot this time, instead of just explaining a single (albeit important) side plot.

Star Ocean 3 falling way short of SO2
Fable(to an extent)
Square(except for ff xi :wub)
DC dying
No Shenmue 3
GTA series success and the attention it's brought to the industry
GC in general save for a few gems
PS2, most of my likings went to xbox and pc
