Ys: Memories of Celceta |OT|: The Ys-iest Purchase You'll Make All Year (Now For EUs)

Never played a Tales game ever and know nothing about them at all. Bad one to start with?

Na, you can basically play any game in this series in any order. The only thing you'll miss is some context during some of the callbacks made that are more nods and winks than anything.

Just beat it. The final dungeon and ending was pretty underwhelming. Man, I missed a lot of stuff lol. Need about 1% of the map still. Will do them all in new game plus.

Depends. I played on Normal and it was a cakewalk. Nightmare in Ys games is usually for the masochists, but it can be quite satisfying when you beat it. Anyone play it on Hard?
I'm playing it on hard. I figured I'd play it again in NG+ anyway so I saved nightmare for that.
I found the very first boss in the game difficult but none of the other bosses since then, but I did wander around a lot so I'm probably overleveled.

This is probably my least favourite of the recent YS games. The music is outstanding and I loved exploring the world, but there is way too much exposition.

I'm liking the game. I'm gonna probably buy the three available purchases off steam later on (Origin, 1+2, and w/e the third was called). So this is the 4th title right? Nice. I was afraid I would be lost in the game but fortunately it seems like Adol meets new people that comprise his party every entry. I did catch a glimpse of a blue haired guy that looked like a previous party member and sure enough I found him in the wiki.

I haven't beaten it. I'm about to enter the Ashen Forest. I guess my biggest complaints are the following:

1. It's a bit overwhelming. Before you have the ability to warp to wherever you want at will, having to travel back and forth between the warp stones of same colors of rolling across decently big areas past the weaker enemies that give little to no exp was mundane.

2. The skills are nice but you gain way too many skills. Like I said I don't know how much further I have, but as of right now I'm pretty sure I've only regularly used one or two skills, and only one of them has leveled up. I don't know how often they expect you to use these but I tend to use it once or twice per group of smaller enemies and fairly regularly with bigger baddies.

3. Money. I've read there are ways of making money but the game hasn't really taught me what I can and can't sell. Previous weapons and armors you've bought sell for absolutely nothing. Just reached a point I only could recoup 1/13th of what I spent on a new weapon utilizing the previous one. I'm doing basically every side mission I find that is useful to me (have only skipped one or two). Like I mentioned earlier the biggest fault for me would have to be not making it clearer what I should and should not sell back. Everything seems to be useful for upgrades or making stuff. It's a bit unfair when you're running low on cash and can't sell stuff in fears you might need it for an upgrade. Even making ingots and materials cost money.

4. This one is a personal minor complaint, but throughout the whole game they've been hinting at some development between Adol and Leeza, but as of right now the conversations are so minimal it feels like they just added this to spice up a 'maybe'. Probably the weakest romance I've seen in a jrpg, but from what I read this is common in the games.

Even including the above I am absolutely adoring the game. I'd easily give it an 8.5/10 if I had to score it. Over-arching story seems to be very minimal, but the sense of wonder and discovering new things is what keeps the train rolling.

Beat it earlier. Music is great, Karna's back is great, dem anime designs, Super bloom upres Ys Seven, yup.

I have no idea who I'm missing for 100% enemies. Oh well that's OK. I'll go about Platting this next year.

Vita purchase totally worth it :3

HA wow sorry, brain fart. Yeah I meant the Y's games...
Heh...
  • Question: "Hey Y's is awesome, right?"
  • Answer: NO. IT IS SPELLED Ys. DO NOT ADD AN APOSTROPHE. IT IS NOT NEEDED. YOU ARE A BAD PERSON AND SHOULD FEEL BAD.
... Anyways, the original versions of Ys IV it mattered to play I & II beforehand, but this time that doesn't seem to be the case, at worst not to the same extent anyway. It's still worth checking out the rest, but you can freely jump into this one. But if you want to grab the others they ARE on sale on the PSN, save for Origins which is only on PC currently. Most any reasonably modern computer should curbstomp that one however.

And here I am watching my LE while waiting for Sony to stops screwing around and gives me a Vita TV.

I'm glad to hear you liked it, anything Falcom is amazing.

The book smells so good. I haven't read it actually. I realize it's supposed to be a guide but.... yeah, wanted to go in fresh. I'll read it later.

I know, man. Now I'm waiting for Second Chapter. Bless Falcom and XSEED.

Every Ys game is like that. Adol always has a girl interested in him, but as he is a "silent hero" nothing much really happens.

There's really no overarching story in the series except in the first two games. Other than some character appearances and that Adol is on an adventure. Unless you're talking about the story in this particular Ys game.

So I'm nearing the end of the game and am a little confused as to how to proceed with a certain side quest. Spoilered stuff is for safety reasons (because I know there's going to be that one guy who gets pissy because he learned the name of a town he hasn't been to yet), and unless you know context you aren't going to be spoiled on anything.

Quest name is "Resentful Spirit" and it's in the last tier of quests you get in Danan. It sees you escorting a spirit to his armor in the bog via equipping an artifact and leading him. Now what I want to know is do I have to hunt the spirit down in the bog or am I just missing him in Danan or the outskirts somehow elsewhere? Want to know because I don't want to have to search every nook and cranny of that damned bog if I don't have too >.>

Also does anyone know how the character trophies work? I got the Frieda and the Adol ones, and am working on Duran atm, but I'm not sure whether or not it ties to time or enemies killed or what because it took me from basically when I unlocked Frieda until I was halfway through the
magic laboratory dungeon
to unlock her trophy.

And here I am watching my LE while waiting for Sony to stops screwing around and gives me a Vita TV.
.

Uh, hate to be the bearer of potential bad news, but since the game makes usage of both front and rear touch doesn't that rule it out for Vita TV?

spoiler for quest
The spirit is in the same area (so no zoning out) as the armor. You can tell anyway since there's an orange flag. Know how the armor is in the northern part? The spirit, a floating black ball, is on the narrow strip of land to the south. It's right next to the chest so if you know where that is, you're good. If you don't, it's kinda hidden behind a big branch.

It's time related. 5 hours each, I think.

Falcom released a patch in Japan so MoC is compatible with Vita TV.

Yeah I read as much about it (about Adol). Nothing wrong with a silent protagonist with little personality, especially when it's an older series, but it still is disappointing for someone who loves character development and romantic stories/backgrounds.

As to the over-arching plot, I was referring to this game specifically, haven't played the others yet. But in this one there's enough to drive the plot forward at the least (stop the baddies). I really like the idea of an explorer meeting new people and seeing all these wonders. But I love them more when they have a personality. Nathan Drake, Indiana Jones are great examples of exploring and meeting new people done right.

And yay, 100% quest completion. Thanks to the guy who gave me the tip, even though I both unlocked Duran's trophy and beat that quest before I came back and refreshed the page, lol...

Also does anyone know if the game let's you continue playing after it ends or does it automatically put you into NG+ or make you chose between doing a NG+ or keep playing? Asking because I'm sitting at 96.1 on my map and wanna go ahead and cap off the story first before I start crawling the map for missing percentages.

It will be patched.

Is Vita TV even announced for the west though? Seems like a pricey investment for something that might not even come over here. Especially considering you can snag a Vita proper on sale every other month for not a bad price these days anyways (175 on BF this year with 4 games lol...).

...

Then again I've been seriously tempted to buy a copy of Quantum Break day one and playing it at a friend's house (even though I don't plan on buying an XBone until it's dirt ass cheap) just to support Remedy, so eh.

The rear touchpad literally works for something that could be done via one button. I don't recall using the triggers much. Boom problem solved.

wtf? I never said it was a big problem, just that it was there and games that make usage of those functions tended not to be compatible with Vita TV, and I (obviously) didn't know it had been patched over in Japan. I swear everything on neogaf has to be some confrontational standoff >_>

One of my best bros has a Vita and he never uses it, worst case scenario is that it's late 2014 with no news of a Vita TV, I'd just get his Vita to play the game.

Mmm yeah know that feel lol, I got my Vita for 200$ 3 months after launch because my cousin got it for madden and the show and played it like 3 times.

For a portable Ys, MGS, Persona, Ninja Gaiden (even though NGS1 is an eh port and NGS2 is kind of an ass port), indie games, and Sony exclusive machine that's worth it imo.

?

You might need a pill of the chill variety. I provided a solution. Nothing in my response was negative towards you.

That's what I did actually. I've played both P4G and this by borrowing his. To be fair he uses it when something good comes off, but if it's anywhere near a Call of Duty or major multiplayer game he doesn't come off. And while he was interested in Ys he wasn't gonna stop playing COD to play this. So he let me borrow it. I don't like borrowing it though so I'm trying to beat it asap. These are the days I'm glad I have Gamefly. I get to play games I normally wouldn't play due to not having a console or whoever owns it not getting it. So I rent the game.

I started playing this two days ago (after ogling the limited edition packins), as a little time burner before bedtime. I totally regret it two nights in a row. I don't know what kind of crack Falcom puts into their games, but I can't stop playing after I start.

Is there something particular about Ancient Burrow? I can't get my characters to rest by standing still. They sheathe their weapons but don't start recovering HP.

I don't recall the name so it might be later on. But since you don't mention it I guess I gotta ask to make sure: Is it a dungeon and do you have the magical cape that lets you heal in dungeons?

Only works when you're outdoors, in dungeons you don't have the resting recovery. Think it was the same in Ys 1/2

Anyone know where to get Silver Ingots?

You can forge them out of coal + silver ore (both of which you can find basically everywhere) at essentially any refinement place in the game. Tell me where you are atm and I'll boot up my game and pinpoint a location for you to snag some silver ore that's close by.

I think I have enough, but I just didn't know where to make the ingots at.

Pretty sure you can forge them in the basement of the arm's shop in the first town. Talk to either the goldsmith (far left in the basement) or the blacksmith (far right in the basement).

If you can't do it there then talk to the blacksmith in Selray. I know he can make them for sure.

My Silver Anniversary Edition finally made it's way through the beginnings of the Christmas post and landed on my doorstep today. No customs charges or superficial damage either!

Have yet to get cracking on the game itself but damn is the packaging lovely. Very much looking forward to sampling the CDs!

You can forge accessories and later support items (healing, etc.).

Well I thought he was more talking along the lines of weapons or armor. Which you can't forge, only refine.

Also has anyone gotten 100% map completion yet? I finished the game earlier at 99.1 T_T

Yeah, got it before I beat the game, look on the map for any lines that are a little more faded than ones around them, that's probably what you are missing.

Do you remember what your map % was before you started the (endgame spoiler-ish)
first battle with Gruda
? Because mine shot up .3-.5% iirc when I started up the
volcanic path to toss the ring-er the mask into the fire
and I'm curious just how far up I need to get before hitting the PNR again.

And beaten. 37 hours or something, with all the quests + map and resources complete. What can I say, it's an Ys game through and through, and as such it's something I love. I don't think it managed to beat Seven as a whole, but I wasn't expecting it to, since Seven is my favourite entry in the whole series right now.

Still, the exploration component they added worked ridiculously well. Exploring was tons of fun and just loading up the map and seeing it getting filled was incredibly rewarding. The combat is a definite step up from Seven and in typical Falcom fashion, they've taken what was already a pretty great system and made small changes here and there that improve on it even more. Amazingly fluid, even faster, the dedicated button for Flash Guarding helps a ton and Flash Dodge was a very interesting mechanic that, while at first glance I thought would be ignored, ended up being really, really useful near the end once I got the hang of it.

I played it on Nightmare and basically did a no healign items/absorb weapon run. The first half of the game, other than the occasional strong enemy in the forest, felt pretty easy. No boss ever had me retry more than 5 times til the Tower, which for a NM run without items is... well, easy. From Crell Emecia onwards, however, there were a bunch of bosses that definitely stepped up for the challenge. I happened to be underleveled all around, too, and I'm not sure why. Beaten the final boss with Frieda at lv. 49 and Adol and Karna at 55, when the boss itself was 55. Don't remember running from enemies, so it was just something that... happened.

Regarding the music, a lot of people commented that they felt the OST was a bit weak, but I don't necessarily agree. It's true that some stuff got used more often than it should have, but I appreciated having some live tracks here as opposed to Seven's entirely synth-ish soundtrack. I still prefer Seven's compositions, mind you, but tracks like Black Wings here with Hiramatsu's guitar definitely delivered the goods!

In the end, I have two small complaints, however. The first one is that, should they keep the party system for the next game, be it V remake or VIII, I hope they'll take a tip from Seven's different weapon-types. Not being able to have Adol equip Strike/Pierce weapons in Celceta made it a bit hard to use my favourite characters, although I still went with Adol/Frieda/Karna party anyway. Still, I'd appreciate having the choice, and maybe if every character had two different options for weapon-types it'd make things a bit more interesting.

As for the second one, it's... the ending. It felt very abrupt. I got what they were trying to do, and apprently Kondo himself commented on how this was done to show that it is "Adol's story", but it's a bit weird that all of a sudden they decided to ditch having a more detailed epilogue. The series always had these very feel good endings where they clearly showed what happened to some extent, so this "it's over, time to pack up" approach felt a bit disjointed from the rest. ESPECIALLY since the party members in Celceta were easily some of the most interesting characters in the whole series!

Anyhow, it's a great game, and one that every A-RPG fan with a Vita should own. I know some people don't really appreciate the story and more RPG-ish newer games, but I think Falcom's been doing an amazing job at crafting these. For someone who's been with the series for quite a while, the bigger emphasis on the stories are allowing them to build the mythology around the series even more, and I personally loved all the shout outs to other games/characters in Celceta.
