Zelda DS - Discussion

alright so, what do you want this game to be?

being that it's not gonna be along the lines of Four Swords (although i'd say there's always a strong chance of multiplayer still making it into the game), what direction would you like the game to go into? 2D or 3D? adult or young link?

im thinking something along the lines of Adventures of Link would be pretty cool on the DS.

2D, and may the wonderfully awesome artstyle of Minish Cap live on!

I imagine the game will once again use a "dual worlds" hook, so maybe the dual screens can be used for that somehow.

True LTTP sequel.

Please god.

EDIT - I don't count Minish Cap. Minish Cap can just... I don't know, sit in a corner somwhere.

Weren't they supposed to have 3 oracle games, each based on a triforce/goddess? They should finish the trilogy.

I'm thinking it will be 2d where you got one "world", "realm" or whatever on each screen and warp between them to solve puzzles.

I hope they make a shorter, more experimental take on the franchise on the DS like they did with Four Swords and make a traditional new entry in the series on GBA some time down the line.

It BETTER be 2D.

Mainly because I'm already getting my 3D Zelda fix, so the 2D one needs to continue too, but also because the DS doesn't handle 3D that well, the touchscreen seems better suited to 2D generally and there's no analogue stick.

If it's 3D, they better have a bloody brilliant idea which requires it.

I think a simple idea that would have some interesting gameplay possibilities would be to have the full triforce on the bottom screen and depending on which piece you touch--be it either courage, wisdom, or power--the abilities of Link or gameplay style around Link would be affected.

I would like 2d since the ds is a much better 2d system than it is 3d

Id like something along the lines of Four Swords graphics wise I thought that was a great looking system, but I guess since it didnt sell well theyre moving away from the 4 swords idea (which I actually quite enjoyed)

I also thought minish cap was great

I'd prefer a really great looking 2D Zelda over a crappy 3D Zelda. I guess that a pseudo-cel-shaded version (a la Viewtiful Joe DS) would be okay. Mario & Luigi 2 has coloured my opinion on what the DS should be doing, and it's definitely 2D.

Young Link, old Link, it doesn't really matter to me as long as the game plays well and has decent audio and visuals.

2d with 3d elements. handheld perfection. Im sure they will come up with some cool uses for the second screen besides a map.

I have been thinking about this for a while....so here goes. A true sequel to Ocarina of Time using a similar engine. Except that when you lock on to enemies, you use the stylus as your sword! How you drag the stylus across the touch screen affects the angle/type of strike. You could still use the d-pad for strafe/circling and backflips. The mic could be used for some type of input as well, what with the persistent music themes in Zelda games.

Time to work on my do-re-me's...HEH.

Sweet Huh!

Please God do not let it be two mirrored worlds to solve puzzles.

after Metroid prime 2 i just would not be able to take anymore of that.

I'd like to see it in Minish Cap style. Maybe 2.5D in TWW style. But PLEASE don't make another AoL, although it's a good game, it's by far the worst game in the series.

Yes. In a corner of... awesomeness!

Anyway, my hopes for Zelda DS: another "two-world" game, like LttP. Dark/light, future/past, whatever. But I think one world should be done in Ocarina of Time-like 3D, while the other in amazing 2D. Maybe have the 3D world on the top screen and the 2D world on the botton screen for touch screen 2D puzzles and such. The 2D world would be a bit less cartoony than Minish Cap, to match more of the Ocarina of Time-type graphics. More like an uber-version of LttP graphics.

Or just have them both on the top screen and keep the bottom screen for a very handy touchscreen menu for swapping items and weapons. Whatever, heh.

Just an idea. :P But I think everyone can agree that it'd be pretty awesome to have a half 2D/half 3D Zelda game with tons of dungeons and harder difficulty than Minish Cap.

Am I the only one who wants to se a Zelda II esque game on the DS? Platforming with exploration and RPG elements.

edit:

oops missed nighttrains sentence. Bring on AoL- II!

Well, you're the minority. Zelda II is the least popular Zelda and Nintendo made sure to never go back to that style for a reason. :\

I know I am, but I am thinking it could be it. Aounuma said that they were doing something different with Zelda DS, and maybe they want to try another Zelda II type of game? Minish Cap was a great game and all, but maybe Nintendo should switch the formula for next the DS game.

3D please. Or something 'different' like the Adventure of Link comments.

There really isn't a need for another 2D Zelda right now. We already have the original, LttP, LA, OoA, OoS, MC, Lttp/4 Swords GBA, 4 Swords GCN. The only 3D Zeldas are OoT, MM, and WW.

NO MORE MICROPHONE GAMEPLAY THANKS

Agreed!

or at least some way you can "opt out" of microphone game play, because say for instance you were someone who had to get the Tube to work every day, and got funny looks off the other passengers blowing his way through XX/XY

Four Swords online would be wonderful...
at the very least I'd like to see the scalable 2d overworlds used again with nice effects. I'm sure it could do it just fine.

Other general uses are touch screen inventory, map and item manipulation etc.

I'm not too hot on the idea of a stylus controlled sword. I've never seen it done well, and it would take the polished coreography out of the battles somewhat in favor of adding ugly control imo.

I don't care about Link's proportions or the tone of the subject matter so much, I know Nintendo will get the feel of those things right, but my preference would be that its colourful and not so pastel/dull looking as some people might have it look.

Thought Zelda II had pretty broken gameplay, but a Zelda built upon a vastly refined template of it would be awesome. It's been a while since I've played a good side scrolling RPG, though I might pop Faxanadu in the old NES tonight. Is there a possibiilty for a Zeldatroid?

faxandu is awesome. And have you played Battle of Olympus? It's in the Zelda II vein, and It's a very good game. I wouldn't mind to seeing a Zelda like that again.

I'd like to see a game like LTTP, no question about it. They're taking Mario back to its roots, and I'd like to see the same done with Zelda. I really enjoyed Minish Cap, but I'd like to see a game that really ties into the epic proportions of OoT but done in the style of LttP. The two games are similar, but I think that they could work in implementing some of OoT's style and innovations into the older model. FSA is a fun game, but it lacks that sense of...well, adventure.

^ I agree. Four Swords Adventures is basically a party game. A game with similar production, but more free roaming adventure would be my most anticipated game in a very very long time.

I think they could probably recreate the Z-targeting style combat in a 2d environment. I'd like to see that done (maybe). And nicer looking 8 directional movement.

They could make a 2d game damn sexy if they wanted...

As much as I'd like Nintendo to make a new 2D Zelda, especially after the very good, but short Minish Cap... I can't help but feel that Nintendo should do everything in their power to use the new Zelda as a showcase for the DS' 3D capabilities. So far, only the in house Nintendo 3d titles have come out looking any good.

Nintendogs, Mario 64 DS, Animal Crossing, Mario Kart. They all look great. Everything else that is 3d? Rubbish so far.

...and just to mention, I want Square Enix to showcase what they can do with the DS 3d capabilities as well. However, I'd REALLY like to see a beautiful 2D version of Crystal Chronicles. It would be cool to play a Secret of Mana game in 3d, kinda like a Zelda engine...

I'm done.

I hate it when people make discussion threads about games with no released information. It makes me think I'm actually going to get real info if I click on the thread. But then it's always, "Let's speculate, guys! That's always so constructive!"

A combination of 2D+3D.

In the touchscreen we have the screen for selecting the item that we want in every moment of the game.

In the superior screen a Zelda 3D game with the engine of Ocarina of Time but Cel Shaded.

I want 2 Zelda games, and one has to be four swords style (even if it comes out 2-3 years later). I love the fact that there's so many different Zelda styles now, but that makes it so much harder to give us what we want. I think I would prefer a 2D style game, but with as many things to do as OoT and MM. I just don't think OoT style is suitable for a handheld. But if I can't get what I want, I want most of all for Nintendo to take their time and give us the best possible experience they can.

Viewtiful Joe looks great so Cel Shading is a big YES

give me a Wind Waker sequel, should be possible, especially since OOT was only 30mb

:)

*drool*

2-D. Please. Return to Koholint (or however it is one spells that). However I'm sure if it's 3-D I'd be pleasantly surprised...but it's not what I WANT.

Yeah I played Battle of Olympus years ago. Never quite made it that far in it... I should try and hunt down a copy, that game was good, it would be worth trying to beat. Who developed Battle of Olympus again? Legacy of the Wizard is another cool side scrolling RPG (by Falcom and part of the Xanadu series)

Sidescrolling Jump&Run Sequences were much better in Link's Awakening than in AoL, so I'd like to see them returning, but being like the ones in LA.

I'm really hoping for more of what Capcom has brought to the table. I love their newer characters and it would be great to see them put together a 3d Zelda. If the new Zelda is 2d, I hope they really tweak a more detailed view with better graphics and larger sprites. Another top down Zelda would be a waste of what the handheld has to offer, not to say I still wouldn't like it or anything.

I have been thinking about this for a while....so here goes. A true sequel to Ocarina of Time using a similar engine.
I'd love more N64 style Zelda on the go, I wish Nintendo would pay more homage to the different Zelda styles each system establishes.

And the opposite viewpoint (mine):

Please, God, let it be two mirrored worlds to solve puzzles. Not MP2 style, no--more like Link to the Past, or Soul Reaver (ie. not only switchable at key points like MP2 or Ocarina of Time), and yes, do something cool with the dual world idea and the dual screens.
