Zelda II - AoL appreciation thread

Call me crazy, but I am one of those that for some reason enjoyed Zelda II - Adventure of Link more than Zelda 1. Zelda II was the first game I played with a level up system, and with some kind of an encounter system. (unless you walked on the road)

The sidescrolling action elements matched with the overworld view was a blast to play. Unfortunately me and my friend had often no idea what the villagers said since our english knowledge were very limited at 8-9 years of age. (being euro and all) With a lack of walkthrough, we had to guess our way to the puzzle solutions. Add to that a very challenging game, we were very satiesfied when we beat it. The last palace was a bitch. I hated that damn place along with the weirdass music. (thunderbird and those fucking moose heads as we called it, argh)

Many see Zelda II as the black sheep of the series, and so does Miyamoto I think. A totally different team from Zelda 1 handled Zelda II according to Miyamoto. (I don't know which team though, jarrod? :P)

Needless to say, I don't agree with that. As fresh as Zelda 1 was when it came out, Zelda II didn't disappoint in that aspect.

oh and the downward stab rules :P

I must say that I don't mind AoL at all. I still have my Gold NES cartridge. The downward stab does rule and I loved seeing it in SSB. Anyway, even though I did enjoy LOZ better, this was a nice change and I would like to see a new Zelda game done in this style.

Sidescrolling zelda was a bizarre and totally fun journey even it was abit easy(okay maybe I should not have put that max nes pad under the chair while I was gone to level up). Playing it out of its timeloop I can see why alot would complain now, they mised that window. Call it inferior if you will I just call it different.

I said it in the last Zelda II appreciation thread we had, and I'll say it again. I'd like to see a new Zelda game for the GBA that is inspired by The Adventure of Link's gameplay.

Actually, of all the Zelda games, I think Zelda II is still the most fun to play today.

Zelda 2 is one of my favorite games. All sorts of shit I loved, like going into Death Mountain for the first time, or discivering what happens when I stab a soldier statue outside of a dungeon, or fighting a harried battle against the Thunderbird, or going into the house of a townslady and ruminating at length about how your health was restored. :D

It was different...but in a good way.

Oh I found the Miyamoto quote about Zelda II

Miyamoto interview said:
Superplay: The sequel, Zelda II: Adventures of Link was a very different game. Why was this? And why have you never done anything like it again?

Shigeru Miyamoto: It was my idea, but the actual game was developed by another team, different people to those that made the first game. Compared to Legend of Zelda, Zelda II went exactly what we expected... All games I make usually gets better in the development process, since good ideas keep coming, but Zelda II was sort of a failure...

More Miyamoto quote about Zelda II.

Shigeru Miyamoto: We actually see A link to the Past as the real sequel to Legend of Zelda. Zelda II was more of a side story about what happened to Link after the events in Legend of Zelda.

I don't care what the official word is or what the general concensus is...i LOVED that game. It was fun, even when it was frustrating...i loved leveling up and finding new heart containers and the spells, etc. And i loved the music(the overworld theme-into battle theme-into overwold theme again thing is embedded into my head), the town, the palaces.

It's interesting that it only took Nintendo one game to introduce an older Link. I think that the idea of Link aging/changing has always been in Nintendo's conception of the franchise.

yeah I still remeber most of the music on the game. I loved the water boots too. Walk on water :P

I love the game. It is not really a Zelda game, but so what ? The game is mad fun and does many things right.
Combat rocks, the best combat in a Zelda game. Controlling Link is great fun, imo one the best controlling sidescrollers ever. Also I thought the encounter system was a great idea. God knows why there are still random battles in rpg's after this game.

Would love a follow-up to this on a portable. Tired of the LttP engine games

Me too, but since Miyamoto kinda see it as a failure = forget it :P

They should just make a new series out of the Zelda2 engine and be done with. It's not like the gameplay has much to do with the traditional Zeldas anyway. In that way they will have a new franchise and they will not disappoint a new generation of gamers who are accustomed to the alttp zeldas.

I thought Miyamoto once said in an interview that within nintendo there is a group of people that loved Zelda2 and would love to get the greenlight to do a gamecube version. Not that that will ever happen of course. But one can always hope.

Startropics.

But Nintendo killed this series early, like all of their other non-Mario/Zelda/Pokemon/Fire Emblem franchises

I really want to see an AoL follow up. If Miyamoto were to go back and look at it today, I am pretty sure he would be able to come up with something new. Hopefully Anouma likes AoL and he will decide to do a follow up once he is done with the new LOZ.

didn't Anouma hate (manual) jumping in games? :lol
That seems odd. Did he say this in an article or what? Oh and the majority of 2D Zelda games have manual jump: The Roc's Cape/Feather.

oh Anouma started the zelda series with OoT, his first game. He hasn't been involved in a 2D zelda game I think.

I wish Nintendo would take a chance again, gameplay-wise, with Zelda. All we're getting so far are upgraded OoTs.

I think Majoras Mask was pretty much a chance, don't you think?

IIRC, Aonuma started the series with MM. His first game as producer was FSA. That game containted the Roc's Feather, and was 2D.

Also, in this interview, Aonuma states that he didn't like the first LOZ at all, but changed his mind about the series after playing alttp.

hmm ok, are you sure it was Zelda MM and not OoT? Guess I was misstaken :)

In certain ways it was, but the core gameplay was exactly like OoT. I don't think you understood what I meant. I want a change of AoL proportions. :P

Ahh, well yeah it would be nice but I doubt it :/

The new LOZ is getting a camera change while you are in the dungeons. Hopefully this is a sign of things to come.

here's appreciating. i don't think it's the best game in the series, but it's the one i enjoy most. very distinctive action. and wonderful music. i think it's unjustly slated for its deviations from zelda tradition. if it was called something other than "zelda," it'd be a well-regarded cult classic. i wonder how the series would have turned out if it had continued in zelda II's course rather than the original's.

incidentally, fans of zelda II should play battle of olympus, which skilfully expands on its ideas.

I agree (what I agree with you? :P), Battle of Olympus is a masterpiece. It's better than Zelda II. (Zelda II was out first though)

It's too bad we'll probably never see a BoO game again.

Zelda II fucking owned. The hell with the haters. That temple theme is also engraved in my soul. SSB Melee had much to do with that, actually.

Isn't that camera change primarily to simulate the classic LoZ overhead view, however?

I've got the Classic NES version sitting here unplayed. I'm gonna get on that shit at some point. Still have to finish Minish and start CoM tho...

CoM?

Drohne, you don't happen to like the old Wizards & Warriors NES games also?

I will always see Zelda II as a sellout. An attempt by Nintendo to make Zelda more like their huge money maker at the time. (Mario)

But regardless of that, the game itself is pretty good. Definitely a classic for sure, but when compared to the other titles in the series, it's the worst.

Maybe it's because I never played Battle of Olympus, or maybe it's because I haven't played Zelda 2 in at least 7 or 8 years, but I actually have good memories of this game. It's not exactly brilliant, but it's so different that I liked playing it. Plus, it's actually really hard (of course, so is the original Zelda) and has some crazy puzzles in it.

I loved Zelda II, and for some reason so did everyone else in my family. Even my mother, who has only played 2 video games in her entire life (Super Mario Brothers and Zelda II), played it for hours on end. The pathetic thing is that none of us ever actually beat the game even after spending hundreds of hours playing it.
