It's not the same for every character though.

Steve Rogers for example has to have some blonde in his hair. Steve having jet black hair wouldn't feel right. The same goes for Tony Stark if he was clean shaven. If Misty Knight was white, it'd be really shitty but if Betty Brant was black, meh.

I can't wait to see if they let Misty Knight have an afro

Put hank pym, clint barton, johnny storm, steve rogers and the original human torch in the same room in regular clothes I defy you to tell them apart

Luke Cage's best look has hair, so

My entire post was a poorly made bald joke being lobbed at Stinkles, but I appreciate the thoughtful replies.

Sounds like you should be complaining to Marvel about why "red hair" is the #1 defining character trait when someone is asked to describe who Mary-Jane Watson is as a character.
It doesn't have to have anything to do with Mary-Jane Watson is as a character. We are talking about visual traits, here. I'm sure there'd be pages of people complaining to if the Spider-Man appeared in Civil War wearing a black/neon green costume for the entire time.

best seen in the classic "Shadow of the Beast"

hank is talking to himself, clint is balancing on the back of a chair. johnny is hitting on the closest attractive woman, cap is drawing on a desk, and jim is left

Not this shit again...How about we make Luke Cage asian and Black Panther a white guy instead. That's okay right?
Nothing against Zenyatta, I'm just sometimes sick of corporate decisions of disregarding the idea of being a faithful to the source material just because of whatever reasons.

That's not her name. The rest was already covered.

Jim and Johnny have the same costume but with a different icon framing and half of the artists that draw them forget it, it made Standoff confusing as hell.

It's not so much that red hair is the ONLY thing that defines MJ but it's certainly a big part of her identity. The same goes for characters like Jean Grey, it wouldn't feel right if she weren't a redhead. Liz Allen becoming Hispanic in Spectacular for example wasn't a big deal because even though her character is traditionally white and blonde, it wasn't a defining trait of hers. Feeling change though and it'll be easier to accept this casting choice once we actually see it in action.

Okay. I think if a character's hair color is a big part of their identity, then they're probably a paper thin character. I mean you could probably exclude Aquaman from that list because you could do some interesting things with the prejudices that cultures create but DC ain't touching that shit.

Who decides what is and isn't a "defining trait." You mention Liz Allen, so what makes her situation different? Because there are other blonde in the comics? Because blondes are more common? Because people don't care about the character as much? Because they've consistently been portrayed in the comics that way and people want rigid adaptations of looks? What is it?

More like

"Face it tiger..."

this especially works because it's supposed to be a high school coming of age story, right?

The movie's name is Homecoming.

The movie will end with Peter meeting MJ to go to the homecoming dance. Count on it.

I'm not fully convinced she'd make a good MJ, but after looking up pics of her she might be able to pull it off look wise.

Acting wise though...well my cousin used to watch that dance show with her, but i won't judge it by that cause Disney Sitcom. And Disney Sitcoms are...yeah. I'm sure she's gotten better since then.

The real issue here is, DC or not, Marvel NEEDS to get JK Simmons back for JJ's role in whatever upcoming Spider-Man movie he'll be in. I won't accept any substitutes.

Jim:"You know I killed Hilter"

Cap:"This motherfucker with the 'I killed hitler' story again"

The great thing about these castings for comic book movies is that they are harder to avoid for them. If someone is cast for a Hunger Games movie, they just won't watch it, but Spider-Man?

EDIT: I wonder how people are going to react about Captain Marvel's haircut. I bet if she doesn't have her modern side shave or whatever there will be riots.

Would you say the same thing about Batmans bat symbol or his cowl? Or Supermans S? Is the only thing that defines Batman his cowl or is it just integral to his character design? No one said it was the #1 defining character trait you're putting words into people's mouths.

Someone oughtta collect all of these "Mary Jane should be..." sentiments in a masterpost. I'm gonna link to it every time someone thinks GAF is progressive.

Just post that tinder thread. The whole thread, no need to choose an specific post.

It's not like we're seeing Mary Jane onscreen for the first time.

Spider-Man has appeared numerous times in the movies, each with different costumes. And every time people put every element of his costume under scrutiny, including their shade of colors. It's what people do.

I just find this whole "characterization is the only thing that matters" argument weird. To begin with, it's not like we can actually discuss that because none of us have watched the movie. And just because it's the most important thing, it doesn't mean that other aspects of a character are non-existent people can't care about those.

Point being that most objections are from people that would struggle to name a single other defining trait that is integral to the character besides being Peter's fixtion. But you already know this.

Yes, but the flipside isn't "I prefer the red hair" which I've said I agree with. That's an understandable take. It's "without red hair, it's not Mary Jane", which is a perplexing take for any adaptation. It's not a defining facet of the character and like many other adapted heroes, visual and even character resists change all the time.

I'd write more, but I'm on mobile now.

And how many different variations of Batman's bat symbol and cowl have been in the comics and films? What, like 50? Maybe more with different combinations. When you walked out of a Batman or Superman movie was your experience impacted more by a shitty nonsensical plot or a comic accurate costume?

With a costume, you could literally show a costume designer a page from a comic and they could replicate it. It might not look good on film or be comfortable for actor, but it could be done. Mary-Jane Watson doesn't exist. You could do an open casting call for red heads in Hollywood, or you could just cast someone you feel is a good fit for the character and make concessions on them looking exactly like they did in the comic. The biggest problem with fan castings is they just want someone that looks like a character. Oh, he has grey hair. He's perfect. So what's more important, the creative team casting someone they think is right for the role as it is written, or getting a high budget cosplay?

Because 'Spider-Man' is literally the costume, otherwise it's just Peter Parker. Thats why people care about what it looks like.

Mary Jane is an actual person, the visual details of her are relatively insignificant

How about they just do both? Zen can have red hair.

So it's clear by now that everyone's identity is wrapped up in their race first and foremost.

That being the case, seems like all white people have to be taught that they have it good in terms of representation. Maybe we should put it in schools.

It really feels like they were setting up this casting to be a switcheroo gotcha surprise kinda thing, so the lack of red hair makes sense. Any other complaint about her in the role probably stems from the phenomenon above.

Jason Sudakis would be a fine replacement

She'll probably dye her hair for the prom scene at the end of the movie.

Had a feeling she was Gwen or MJ given how extremely quiet they've been about her role. Also didn't think Zendaya would be cast as a minor part.

Yeah for a while there she was basically the only female cast member announced outside of Tomei, in comparison to like 10 dudes. It was obvious her character would be a big one

Maybe, xmen felt distracting at times.

But the feeling and general movie will likely feel like all marvel movies which is well below movies like sin, blade etc

They always seem to draw off the same cheese style, lines and even the way they setup scenes and camera angles. I just can't be hyped for marvel movies until someone else steps up.

Hope for a new blade or for McFarlane to hit a new spawn hard. If gladly take three spawns, cartoon is great.
