Man, the day a white guy reprises a black comic character It will be amazing.

Can't wait for white Rhodey or Cyborg.

Hell, gimme a white Luke Cage.
What about a white Deathlok?

Saying that Jean is a more popular character because she is playable in more video games is ridiculous. Of course Mary Jane isn't going to be playable in as many video games because she's not a super hero. That's like saying Havok is more popular than Aunt May or J Jonah Jameson because he's playable in a bunch of video games. Being in a video game does not increase your popularity by x%. Especially if it's X-Men: Gamemaster's Legacy for the Game Gear because like 10 people remember that game.

Now all I can think about is how Havok isn't playable in so many damn games. He was in the Legends and Ultimate Alliance games, but was never playable. Shit was bizarre. He is one of the most misused characters that Marvel has.

Havok would be huge if he ever got a chance to be properly represented in anything (including the comics). The mother fucker's power set and back story are so fucking good.

I wasn't claiming Grey was popular solely due to her appearance in video games, merely that her continued appearance in so many Marvel titles over the decades was an additional indicator of her status as a hallmark character. And even that was just in response to your criticizing her role in games, whereas Watson hasn't been prominent in any outside of her usual damsel in distress status.

because you used her roles in games to try to state a level of popularity that isnt there. and even in her damsel in distress role, mj is still a prominent character

What's your idea of a black name? Most African-American people have last names of European descent for very obvious reasons.

Having a double first name is definitely a sign of whiteness, even more particularly southern whiteness.

Bobby Jo, Billy Sue, etc.

spider man is more popular than all of the xmen though, especially as a collective. so when spider man is front and center, the focus is usually on his love live. you can have anything named xmen, and its a dice roll on whether she even appears. especially considering that shes spent a good number of her years dead.
Spiderman is also more popular than Batman and Superman but that doesn't mean I'd argue Mary Jane Watson, merely due to her attachment to a huge franchise, is more well known than Bruce Wayne or Clark Kent. I'm not sure why that reasoning holds against Jean Grey, either.

I think something is being lost in translation here. I initially disagreed with the statement that Watson was the most well known redhead in comics. I never contested her popularity, or her status as a prominent character.

Jean isn't the xmen though. She's never been the face of the xmen, just an ideal that a few xmen have tried and failed to live up to. Spider man is more popular that those two, but Jean isn't even a titular character to try to put in league with them, so it's not like that point holds water either. Jean is to the xmen as barbara Gordon is to Batman.

pretty popular among Southern Black folk and some parts of the Caribbean too.

Huh, didn't know that. I just always thought of it as kind of a redneck thing.

As for Latinos, I assume Latinos don't use double Anglo names, though?

Edit: anyway, he only one I find odd is the Asian kid named Ned Leeds. But really, Ned is not really a popular name for anyone young these days.

Where'd you get that from?

SPIDER-MAN Is World's Most Profitable Superhero (And It's Not Even Close)

Last year, Marvel sold approximately $1.3B worth of Spider-Man products, which is approximately four times the $325M they made from the Avengers. Meanwhile, their competition over at DC has struggled to keep up. Unsurprisingly, their most popular property was Batman, who brought in a respectable $494M, while their second most popular hero, Superman, brought it about $277M.

Which Superhero Earns $1.3 Billion a Year?

To be fair this data is from 2014, and I've no idea if Batman or Superman have toppled Spidey's merch since then. But I doubt it.

Well he's the best one that makes sense!

You missed a lot more. The Gamegear was way ahead of its time and an awesome handheld. Anyway, Phoenix was also playable in DOS games going back to the 90s.

DOS, fam.

But doesn't that highlight the problem with claiming she's more well known than Grey? MJ's popularity stems almost directly from her association with Spider-Man; not being a standalone character in her own right but from being, as you said, "right beside him". In a discussion about which of the two is more recognizable, how does Jane even approach a character like Grey if you remove Spider-Man from the picture? I imagine most people would be hard pressed to differentiate Barb Gordon in casual clothes from Watson.

Anyway, Grey wins the google fight so that's enough for me. :p

Oh yeah dude Google Fight is the best metric for this. You're right damn.

Shit I dropped my link

It's because Spider-Man still appeals to kids just as much as he appeals to adults. Their obsession with Batman being "mature" has partially alienated him from kids. Spider-Man strikes the right balance still. Superman is lower because they've slowly messed him up over the last few decades for a number of reasons.

":p" smilies are usually a good indicator that the comment they're attached to shouldn't be taken too seriously, bruh. :p

Agreed. And it's such a shame. DC has so many amazing properties and seemingly no idea what to do with them. It's frustrating to watch.

I know I know I just had to get in on that lol

The fact that this thread has become not much more than a Jean vs MJ popularity contest is so ridiculous but at least it just reads like people's egos not being willing to concede a point in a thread like 10 pages ago rather than someone arguing how lifethreateningly vital it is to keep some sort of red haired comic icon sacred. The latter is when you know these types of discussions cross the point of no return into FUBAR shitshow.

I didn't know she could sing but wow she's amazing. She'll be the perfect MJ if she have decent acting skills.

Also goddamn at this thread being about Jean vs MJ and the X-Men and videogames, which is not what I came to read in a thread about Zendaya as MJ!

Yup GOAT.

I think Batman's overall universe is more iconic.

There are a few side characters in Spider-Man that are known by the average fan.

SpiderMan and Batman seem head and shoulders above the rest. Iron Man in terms of box office gross can make a claim but I am going to be very interested to see how and what Marvel does with him in the inevitable post-RDJ world.

Disney has extracted his DNA and already begun the cloning process. There will never be a post-RDJ world.

Personal preference, so this doesn't mean shit either way, but it'd be cool if she didn't have to straighten her hair or wear a wig if they go "iconic." But she can do whatever the hell she wants. If she wants to rock the red silky locks, I'm on board too.
