Serious diseases permeating through the 3rd world affecting so many lives and some really smart asses making fun. Lucky no mod saw it so you got away with it.

Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.
Huh? BTW, mods can see any modification in posts even if you deleted them.

Just follow precautions and buy a mosquito repelent.

And get a cat. All of my cats were mosquito-killing machines. They had stronger prey drive for them than for anything else.

I realize how serious this is but sometimes I feel the WHO and all them freak out too hard and then people freak too hard.

Reminds me of when they were saying everyone was going to be dying of the swine flu and then it was bird flu. I'm honestly not overly concerned. Aware, but not overly concerned.
The response to these kinds of things NEEDS to be quick & strong, otherwise we are screwed when something turns out to be a real worldwide problem. Who knows, maybe swine & bird flu would have been far more serious had not organizations like WHO made it seem like a big deal. In cases where the result could be a worldwide pandemic, there's really no such thing as being too careful. Better safe than sorry. This is hardly them "freaking out too much", when they aren't even suggesting suspending travel to & from these areas. They are just pointing out this is something that needs to be taken seriously and warning people to be a bit more cautious, especially if they belong to a certain risk group, that's hardly "freaking out"

Seriously can we like just fucking eradicate mosquitos from the face of the earth already? I mean the ecosystem wouldn't be that badly fucked right?

Damn. Hope they get a handle on it quickly, it's one of those fucker diseases with lifelong consequences for the family, not something as simple as death.

Zika is migrating, it isn't down to just local mosquitos.

One more reason to stay the hell out of the tropics.

I thought some company was already trying those modified mosquitoes to start killing the species in places with dengue and Malaria.

Release them all.

Every cat I've had just sat and ignored any mosquitoes buzzing around them. Maybe they already knew that they weren't the ones that can carry Zika?

So this virus is supposed to clear from your system pretty fast right? Like even if you get it, you can get pregnant without worry later? It doesn't linger in your body?

Mosquitos freaking suck. Ebola is a terrible disease but with the way it spreads it can be contained. Mosquitos are quite nearly impossible to contain.

The symptoms don't seem bad unless you're a baby

I guess the WHO wants to wait and to not cause panic, but zika has also been linked to Guillain Barré syndrome, an autoinmune disease that is painfully debilitating, it's not fatal with treatment, thankfully, but it could leave you bed-ridden for months. It's the same with microcephaly, having zika doesn't automatically gives you the disease but it increases the chances considerably.

RIP Olympics

Well technically the Olympics will be in the winter.

Who am I kidding Rio has no actual winter at all.

Went to Honduras in mid December with my (didn't know at the time) pregnant wife. We also live in Texas. Wife is in full freak out mode.

Once you get the disease, do you have it and/or are you a carrier for life? Is it a threat only to women who are pregnant at the time they are infected, or will it affect a woman's ability to birth a healthy child months/years later?

I've been looking for an answer to this everywhere, and I can't find one.

My guess is no because the viral load decreases after the initial infection once your immune system gets a handle on it.

Great apparently southern Europe has a mosquito that can potentially carry it, the aedes albopictus, and it has been speculated before that those can reach Norway too if it gets warm enough :(

Yikes.

Serious question: would exterminating all mosquitoes, if possible, have any negative impact on the environment?

Because with all the diseases they have with them and how annoying they are this really sounds like a good idea (theoretically).

So is my understanding correct.... For non-pregnant women and males, symptoms are mild at worst and last about a week? And is out of the system in that week?

And for pregnant or about to be pregnant women, there is greater risk posed to the fetus and it's development?

Probably not. They are an invasive species in most places, anyway. Fuck 'em.
