Never played the original one but it sure looks cool...Pretty nice stuff !

I think this is suppose to be a remake of that, so you'll have a chance to play it. The original was hyped to be Koei's answer to FF7. Unlike with Grandia which was called the Saturns answer to that, Zill wasn't good to say the least.

The free scenario thing sounds novel, but I wonder how well Koei implemented it? I checked out the Zill O'll -infinite- site and the large cast of characteres has me interested. I might give this one a try if I get NxC done before the 23rd.

Does anyone have pics of the original?

The game looks kinda neat, but at the same time it looks like a PS1 game aka. Shadow Hearts 1 style. I would expect a PS2 REMAKE to look much different from the original, but I've never seen any pics of the original so I don't know.

GameSpot's review has some accompanying [crappy & tiny] shots of Zill O'll for the PSX. Perceptive individuals will notice Mr. Nutt naming his male hero "you-suck" and the female hero "mediocre". :lol

According to Archaeopteryx from the GameFAQs boards, the GSpot review is way off. I normally don't trust GameFAQ posts, but I've read Archaeopteryx's opinions from elsewhere and agreed with them, so I'm hopeful about -infinite-.

EDIT: Solidsnakex beat me to it, heh.

RPG reviews in the western press are always way off, so that's hardly a surprise.

It's weird, last generation, the majority of middle road RPGs (a game like TOD2) would score 8s, while the high budget/heavy hype (FF, Parasite Eve) ones would score 9s, but this gen, middle of the road RPGs score 6's and 7's, and high budget/heavy hype ones still score 9's. I don't think overall quality of RPGs have decreased (some may even say they've gotten better), just that we don't quite have as many as the PSX era (at least not yet - this Xmas is gonna be a phenominal time to be an RPG fan). Based on reading his reviews and msg board posts, Christian seems to have pretty good taste when it comes to RPGs (though he's slightly harsher on games than I would be, if I was a reviewer). Except for the controversial Fable score, which was about 3 points too high :P I'd probably take his word on this one (I remember hearing mediocre things about this game years ago, too).

Still, those are some pretty nice screens, and even though I don't have much time for them, I'm always pretty appreciative of more obscure RPGs making their way over here, as payment for leaving the best shit in Japan in the pre FF7 days.

Haha, that Gamespot review is from Ferricide. I wouldn't call him mainstream, but I would say he hardly has an ounce of taste. :p Sorry, Ferr, hating on Matsuno games = all opinions invalidated.

Hmm, wow, you must be the first person on this board who doesn't get disgusted when Matsuno's mentioned, honestly some of the things JackFrost and company have said about him...

Matsuno is the videogame equivalent of communism - some excellent ideas in theory, but totally flawed in practice. I wanted to like SaGa Frontier, loving all the different regions you can go to (some really creative world design here - go from a bleak, Blade Runner style city to a Dutch style area, to a giant casino, to a suburban town with ancient ruins underneath, to a world randomly called "Manhattan", to a Magic Kingdom type world, to a Wild West world, to the inside of an alien and even to Cyberspace), and all the quests you can do, but the awful awful battles (fight a million easy guys who take forever, with no running away from them, then fight a boss and get totally slaughtered), slow levelling up and the near-directionless plot totally got to me. FF2j has a great plot (relative to its time), but the levelling up system makes the game such a chore to play, etc.

I personally don't HATE Kawazu, however at least he is trying new things, even if they are somethings things we should not do :lol

Edited for accuracy

Er, the Matsuno I'm refering to is the old Quest director. Ogre Battle, Tactics Ogre, Final Fantasy Tactics, Vagrant Story.

Are you thinking of Kawazu?

Ohhh, yeah... Kawazu. I always thought Ferricide liked Matsuno (Ogre/Tactics/Vagrant Story guy), and hated Kawazu. Sorry for the confusion.

I really wanted to play this back when it was announced for PSX. Too bad they didn't bring that over... but I guess I can see this one making it?

You should be ashamed mistaking Matsuno for Kawazu. It's bad enough the guy has gone mad from working on FFXII and soul his soul to the devil and disappeared leaving Square Enix stuck with an incomplete game, but now he gets bad-mouthed and blamed for Kawazu's sins too. Seriously.... what in the fuck. :(

Blah, all these developer names get all jumbled in my head anyways. It's been a long day at work, ease up a bit :P
