What was the first commercially-released personal computer game ever?

We've got the first console game (the Magnavox Odyssey) and the first arcade game (Computer Space) and the first handheld game (the Mattel Auto Race) but early computer games are poorly documented in comparison.

There are some early candidates like Temple of Apshai, Akalabeth, Mystery House, Zork, etc., but I'm wondering if there actually is a determinable first.

Soul Sacrifice
Terraway
DB battle for Z
Misc PS1 games like Vagrant Story, Xenogears, FFVII (granted I played/finished these when I was in high school, but I'd play them again)
Tactics Ogre: LUCT
Persona 4 Golden
KillZone Mercenaries
Persona 2
Guacamelee
Uncharted GA
Sly Cooper
Walking Dead


Now why this is stupid is because I've installed and deleted a few because I can't decide what to play through completetion first and it's bugging me. If this was console or 3DS I wouldn't be asking this. What do the great minds think I should start first on this lousy 4GB card I have?

This list is like my new Steam backlog.
 
What game started using the C key as the crouch button? Also, did the devs of that game receive some kind of punishment for that... like death or something? I always wanted to know that.

For starters, use your charging cable to transfer games back and forth between your computer. It only takes a couple minutes for it to work and you can swap games easily that way. Also, the save data for vita native games are in the bubble, so deleting the game takes the save with it, so you want to use your computer for backing games up.

Valkyria Chronicles is long has solid gameplay and a crappy story, so starting the game and putting it down for a few weeks won't hurt you.

P4G will steal away 100 hours of your life easily. Gameplay isn't the greatest out there.

All of this being said, you should try Tearaway first. It shows off all the vita's features, is fun, and is a relatively short game so it won't be stuck on your memory card forever.

It has been quite some time since I played the original, but I seem to remember there being certain routes (mostly stealth approaches) that could only be accessed while playing as Luger.

It's a bit tricky given the computer games industry started out with bedroom programmers making games, which led to giving them to their friends, which led in turn to selling them via mail order advertised in fanzines before actually getting them in stores; at what point in that continuum do you regard it as being "the first game"?

That's the thing, I think. Because it was driven by hobbyists, it sort of evolved naturally rather than springing into life with a definite 'first title'. And indeed, evolved in different ways in different parts of the world.

For what it's worth, in the UK, the earliest that I can think of that made an impact was Football Manager on the ZX81 (which was mail order but - by the scale of the time - a big hit).

Question about TES oblivion. How do I use the open easy lock skill I got with alteration? I found a door with easy and cats it, multiple times and even got my skill up a couple times.

Start with tearaway! It's the shortest. Then go to the walking dead! It's bangin.
 
Alright, so Best Buy has The Last of Us and Beyond: Two Souls on sale for $30. I've been waiting for what feels like an eternity waiting for a great deal, and one's finally popped up. I just dropped $40 for Bravely Default, and I'm absolutely certain I'm going to buy The Last of Us. After all the good reviews, it's stupid not to pick it up.

My question is, should I jump for Beyond: Two Souls? I heard that the game was pretty story driven in the vein of The Last of Us, and at $30, this is probably the price I'm gonna find for awhile. Do you think it's worth it, or should I rent it or wait for another price drop?

Awesome, this seems the way to go. Tearaway first, then probably Walking Dead, followed by P4G. Thanks. The transfer idea is great.

I have the SFIV TE Arcade stick and they're probably close to $150 used and over $300 new (those are Amazon prices). I've barely used mine because it was the 20th Anniversary edition. I guess if you find a buyer I'd say $180 or best offer. I'd suspect in the near $130-$150 range if it's used. It's not like you can't spend that much and get a decent stick online that's the same quality if not better. I'm not an expert on sticks. I went all out when SFIV released.
 
The story isn't an important part of the Souls series. The games have great atmosphere but it's not like you have to remember any character names or locations to appreciate them. You'll be fine jumping in now.

I just finished Beyond, and have Platinum-ed both it and TLOU. I heartily recommend both of them. As long as you go into it with the right expectations (David Cage story, not super "gamey") it should be very enjoyable. The variety of the art assets and environments stunned me.

Beyond is pretty story driven yes, but in a totally different way from TLoU. TLoU has pretty good gameplay combined with a low key story that ramps up in the final act. For the most part it is just about characters rather than a story. Definitely worth $30.

Beyond is kinda similar in the sense that the story is also very low key for the majority of the game and only ramps up for the finale. Most of the time it is about one central character and her relationship with the world. Her good times and her bad times. A slice of life story that plays non-chronologically. Gameplay wise it couldn't be more different from TLoU though. TLoU is a third person shooter that puts a lot of emphasis on stealth. Beyond is like a traditional 3D adventure game, but more cinematic and with almost no puzzles. The gameplay is entirely in service of the story. There is hardly any filler or waves of enemies to fight. There are action elements, but they are mostly QTE based. For the most part it is just about exploring and interacting with your environment. You also make choices than can affect the story and the ending of the game.

If you played TWD or Heavy Rain you know what to expect from Beyond. The gameplay is pretty similar and it's highly entertaining for the whole 10-12 hour ride. I loved Beyond and would definitely recommend it for $30, but it's certainly not for everyone. Go in with the right expectations and mindset and you should enjoy it however.

I don´t know if it goes here but.....

I recently played NFS HP 2010 and noticed that in a race when i´m in the last mile the AI slows down letting me catch up and win almost always

Someone else as noticed this or i´m being paranoic

In Skyrim how come I can't learn or use Banish?

I went to go D/E a weapon and it says I already know it. So I choose my star & weapon but there is only two enchantments..banish isn't one of them.

Why can;t i enjoy single player games anymore? ever the last game i played was uc3 and i dont think i got any trophies for it finishing it!!!


i guess all those years spent on socom confrontation really took a toll on my patient.

yes i accepted very long time ago, but the thing is , as soon a game i like comes out i get it but never finished it, for example the infamous games!! always must have for me or MGS series, but i tend to just pull a lay away and be like ill finish it later lol never gets touched!!!

you won't believe how much money i spent on those games in ps3 era and never touched it, last month i took like 35 games to gamestop that has never been touched since the first hour of play the day i bought them! lol


i won;t make the same mistake with the Ps4 this time around tho.
 
I just got a PS3. As someone who loved Xenoblade and most FFs but dislikes SMT and other "hardcore"-RPGs, what are some (J)RPG recommendations besides the FFs?
 
• Atelier Rorona/Totori/Meruru - Excellent open-ended RPGs where you play as an alchemist that have to collect ingredients, synthesize items, and defeat monsters. They offer a lot more freedom than your typical RPG and feature multiple endings.
• Folklore - An action RPG where you summon fairies to fight you. The Irish folklore setting and combat mechanics are both unique.
• Yakuza 3/4 - Beat up punks in Tokyo, sing karaoke, or help raise children in an orphanage. There is always something interesting to do in the Yakuza series.

Resonance of Fate is also great but it might be too hardcore for you. Look up some video reviews on either Gametrailers or YouTube to get a feel for the games.

Go with Guacamelee. Aim for 100% and you will be pleasantly surprised by the insane challenge it offers. It is extremely rewarding, you will love it.

I read somewhere that the Gold Files in Virtue's Last Reward should be read towards the end or after seeing the true ending because they contain mild spoilers or at least hint towards things. Any truth to this?
 
Ground Zeroes and Titan Fall are right around the corner and I really want to get the Xbox One, I was wondering should I get the console now or wait for the rumor sku that's supposed come out this year?

Yes, some of them contain information that you would normally aquire at a later point in the story.
It's not THAT spoilery, the biggest mysteries will remain hidden, but I still found it a bit annoying to read something in the files, only to later read the same thing again in the story and the main character going "Wow, I didn't know that!"
