the fgc fucking things up again ;-;

But yo, sand-attack is top tier dawg.

Beef reminds me that I should get on that soon. PSQuad about to see some good use now.

In other news, has anyone else ever found themselves getting better at old mainstay games after getting used to fighters? One of the biggest reasons why I never played Fox in Smash despite liking the character (both as a fighter and as an old Star Fox 64 addict) was because I felt like my fingers just weren't fast enough for that shit.

Fast forward to now and I'm messing around in the lab translating hundreds of hours of Marvel 3 Viper quirks into my Fox and he actually looks like he could become decent in my hands. Doing tiger knee motions for advancing and pivoting short hop double lasers puts a smile on my face every time. Who knew SHDLs were easier using the control stick to short hop? (Project M mind you) I've almost got waveshining down too. I just need to get more consistent with getting max distance wavedashes forward.

Dat Quadruple thanks you.

And yeah, I suddenly got a lot more competent in older games after years of learning fighters. Smash 64 was one of them, although I'm no Isai.

Beef what are your thoughts on strider?

Very fun. I like the Metroid feel of it, but personally that's like a curse to me too because it makes me wanna explore EVERYTHING, even if I don't have all the upgrades required yet. I'm also pretty bad at properly dodging bullets so I can't keep up a Charge Time worth a damn. I'm not a fan of not being able to use the D-Pad to move, but it's not a big deal.

I don't know how faithful this is to the older games since I've never had a chance to play them (never saw a Strider machine near me when arcades were big, and I didn't have a Playstation when Strider 2+1 were released), but I hope older fans like it.

Guys don't worry I will be giving my completely unbiased and non money hatted review on Strider once it comes out on Steam tomorrow. And yes I have played all the Strider games so it will be coming from the perspective of an old fan.

There's also this one ability (Eagle Flight, I think) that lets you warp from one area to the other. It came at JUST the right time too, because I was playing and I noticed that I had missed an upgrade. Then I zoomed the map out a bit and thought "am I really gonna have to backtrack through all this shit again?" Turns out that I didn't! The ability only warps you to certain areas (think of the Keyholes in SotN), but it's still nice.

dahbomb just tell me as someone who owns strider 2, is this a yes or a no?
I haven't played it yet so I have no idea!

Doesn't look to be similar to Strider 2 though. Looks like the older adventure-esque Strider with some elements of the arcade Strider games.

tager is really fun so far, he gets lamed out a lot but once you get a chance, his pressure and gimmicks feel so free, like you can just make it up instead of having set plays. i like the idea set plays a lot, but it's also fun to riff too. and i mean he still has good setups and safe jumps and bbcp isn't on like, kof13 level of bs wakeup escapes. it's been a cool ass game so far for me.

Also Tetris side is imba compared to Puyo
The garbage given for t-spin clears in guideline games was always kinda dumb, especially with how it boosts your garbage sent with material churned ratio.

1:1 transfer of line material that was present before the clearing piece for 2-4 line clears is better as it makes combos more powerful and actually allows the two players to be playing a VS match and not just a coincidental performance. Opponent stacking on the right? Send gaps on the left.

Granted, designing a puzzle game to actually have a competitive VS mode has always been a trick. Games like Pochi to Nyaa pull it off by pitting both players into a mutually assured destruction scenario. Whenever the first player decides to send the nukes, the other player must respond.

Curious. Did you ever like any of the KOF in terms of wakeup escapes/options?

BBCP is fun. Check it out.

Break the cycle of bitching about your main game but refusing to try other things!

bb has been out for months? why are people all of a sudden catching on?

i personally prefer guilty and dont take bb too seriously, but im glad people are having fun with the game. i sincerely wish arcsys would do the right thing and port xrd p4u2 and bbcp to steam so the anime revolution can truly begin

even ultradavid is animu now? sega making more anime fighters? rip.

well i played the first bb quite a lot for about half a year, but then i got tired of how bad tager was and other people weren't played much anymore either, so i quit. i tried persona, only reason i didn't stick it was that there a bunch of other games i wanted to play at the time, like sfxt, marvel 3, ttt2, etc. recently i found myself only caring about two games that still get play at majors, sf4 and injustice, so it's a good time to pick up bb for me. and with the new gg coming out i figure it's good to get more of a grounding in arcsys style games anyway. i think the characters in bb mostly look pretty stupid, but i think the same about injustice and sf4 and sfxt and pretty much most of the modern games i actually like, so oh well.

Curious. Did you ever like any of the KOF in terms of wakeup escapes/options?

the only other kof i tried was 2k3 and only for like a month, so, i can't really answer this question tbh.

yeah i hear that, more people should be more willing to investigate more games

also, yeah, jimmy c really loves guilty gear, and yep, his character is johnny. i think he's pretty sad about him not being in xrd actually

I was going to write a part about how a real vs. puzzle game is nearly impossible due to lack of direct player interaction... but then you went and edited that in. Tetris has always been the worst about that though IMO -- it feels like whoever has the higher APM and cleaner builds wins 95%+ of the time. Lesser skilled players have no shot unless you're playing some weird variant, and the game ends up about as interactive as a versus game of Beatmania IIDX. (As an aside: high-level Tetris w/ Card Captor Sakura is hilarious because specials are going off every 2-3 seconds -- it's MvC3 levels of spastic at times. But that just makes things for the slower players worse...)

At least in Puyo you have some decisions to make in regards to cutting a chain short, and players being attacked can keep building out during the chain and counter with something bigger. That leads to its own problems, though. I always thought Puyo would have been better if a counters led to a soft reset of the chain, so that a 10 chain clearing an 8 chain would lead to a 2 chain's amount of garbage being sent over, not the 9th and 10th parts of the chain's garbage... but what do I know, I'm a scrub at that game. :p

The additions in BBCP tipped the scales from "pretty much the whole cast is stupid" to "most of the cast is stupid". I can live with that.

BBCP is a great fighting game

If you ever really get into it, you should play with some of us in BBCP sometime on netplay.

It's always nice to hear people enjoying the game. I think BBCP is the best of the series so far with its ideas.
It's come a long ways from CT with its characters and system mechanics.

Man no D-Pad movement is weak. I always get excited when certain classic style titles come out so I can use my Sega Saturn PS2 pad on my 360 and then I typically learn that the movement is not functional on the D-Pad. The old school gamer in me makes that a huge bummer.

Im in the same situation.

Im Considering Nu, but that's only based on my anecdotal experience spending a couple hours in the training room with CT. Otherwise I know nothing about the characters.

Q, I feel you on being disappointed in regards to +r being a base for Xrd and how that feels like a regression. But I think being a dedicated fan of the series for so long can impair your ability to appreciate Xrd being a new beginning in which to rebuild the characters. Being someone that has played the series casually since XX the character/systems regression doesn't bother me much because the core gameplay of the series just feels so much better than 90% of what's out there. It almost feels like the lost complexity would be a distraction in terms of Xrd the more I think about it.

I'm not saying being disappointed isn't a valid response but lets just say I'm glad I'm not feeling what you're feeling.

Also if Ky is your main at least he's the freshest thing about the game so far.

*Ky main fist-bump*

What made Puyo competitive was the ability to offset garbage waiting to fall by making chains on your own board. It's like suddenly getting the ability to block, bait, and punish in a fighting game all in one mechanic.

I touched on this in the PPT thread here and more on another board but the major flaw in PvT mode is that Puyo players have to completely change their building strategies at the expense of others, while Tetris players can pretty much play like they used to. Baits and punishes do nothing when garbage rises from the bottom in Tetris, and Tetris' ability to harass at the drop of a hat makes it difficult for Puyo players to react and block accordingly. Most the top players on online leaderboards are Tetris players as a result, and thanks to the replay upload feature we see top Puyo players immediately opening with chains that are designed to be reachable even after eating a rock of garbage -- but again, this strategy is done out of necessity and shuts out other choices.

Who would suit my playstyle in Xrd? I play marvel exclusively at the moment and point Doom is my favorite character, followed by Dante. I guess I like lame/space control characters and anything that's assist-like in nature is a bonus. I have mediocre execution at best. I refuse to play awful looking characters like bed man . I'm interested in Ino, Faust, and Eddie so far.

Yeah, Ky looks really interesting now, though he lost a bit of his jack of all trades power.

I'm mostly just sad at the loss of FRC's and annoyed at the inclusion of YRC. It's more of a balance concern. The game will most likely be speed up in later versions

People like not having to guess at the menus and being able to read the story modes and download the DLC without a hassle.

i can understand but i have to think if you havent already purchased the game and havent been playing it, you really dont care.

i can understand people being into the story and shit (bb story is sort of interesting) but i dont understand you willing to wait MONTHS (sometimes years) for someone to translate スタート to start ....esp when that is something that has no bearing on the actual gameplay

I've been talking up the game for like, a year+. I care. I'm just not putting up with the hassle to get the japanese version when I'm a casual player and can wait on NA.
