Does anyone else feel the same way?

I think its so cool that stock photos capture how massive the world is. Those people in the pictures have no idea that people are looking at them. And then there's the photographer who took the photo. We can't tell what that person in the photo is like, or how they are. The locations are amazing too. They're a complete mystery.

Stock photos give me a sense of wonder and insignificance.... Does anyone else feel the same?

I get the impression that the entire concept of photography is new to you.

How is the subject matter for a stock photo chosen? Does a photographer just photograph a lot of random things and hope he/she strikes upon something that will be widely used?

You sit and wonder: "Hmm, if I were a graphic designer making a new website or flyer about X subject, what would be the perfect image for that?"

What, you think the subgenre of "laughing women eating salad" came out of nowhere?

That salad must either be fucking hilarious or have some special effects...

You seem to have zero understanding of how stock photography works. Besides candid editorial shots, the vast majority involve paid models who fully understand that the photos will be bought and used by many individuals. None of them are clueless about where the images will end up and how they will be used in most scenarios.

Stock photos don't capture anything massive about the world and there is no mystery behind them. A huge chunk of stock photos come from a rather small number of professionals who have this down to a money-making science (see Yuri Arcurs). The best models to use, how generic to be to capture a wide audience, most attractive neutral lighting, popular trends in photo usage, metatags/keywords that generate the most buys, etc.

There's just something so... Special about stock photos. They seem so much more candid and natural.

"Candid and natural" is pretty much the opposite of what I think when I see a stock photo. They're the most artificial, deliberate, unnatural photos there are.
