I am not surprised they joined the club.

A bill moving swiftly through the Georgia House of Representatives would allow business owners who believe homosexuality is a sin to openly discriminate against gay Americans by denying them employment or banning them from restaurants and hotels.

The proposal, dubbed the Preservation of Religious Freedom Act, would allow any individual or for-profit company to ignore Georgia laws—including anti-discrimination and civil rights laws—that "indirectly constrain" exercise of religion. Atlanta, for example, prohibits discrimination against LGBT residents seeking housing, employment, and public accommodations. But the state bill could trump Atlanta's protections.

Hate me for being gay if old.

Huh?! How is this even possible?

America, what the hell are you guys doing?

Hate and the bible trump logic and common sense. Hopefully the Georgia legislature saw the trouncing an idiot from Arizona got last night from Anderson Cooper.

I wouldn't put the blame on the bible.

This, the people who support this "don't discriminate against my right to discriminate!" crap are not following the bible as they claim. There are several points in scripture where this type of behavior against "sinners" is frowned upon but they do not care. This bill was born out of pure 100% malice and is using the bible a pedestal to justify it.

Just wait until some doctor has a religious moral conviction treating a gay man for HIV because that will encourage him to go out and have more sex.

Could the US Supereme Court just rule all these anti-gay religion laws springing up in every backwards place as unconstitutional? Wouldn't that stop all this crazy nonsense, and save time and money for the courts.

The more they pass these bills, the more likely the supreme court picks one of them up and suddenly gay marriage is legal in the country and sexuality is a protected class. Their short shortsightedness is astounding, especially since many of the people who helped draft and pass this bill were probably alive during the end of segregation.

Yeah, we've got this thing in recent years about jousting with the worst of the Southwestern states to take the mantle in the Southeastern ones.

Hopefully it gets smashed down in full, and those pushing for it get proper shunned and all in turn.

They'll have to if they keep popping up.

What this guy said, in the Bible discrmination against sinners is looked down upon and I'd argue it's worse than sinning yourself.

SEVERAL POINTS.

basically the entire new testament is love each other, don't judge others, and forgive others their sins.

this is just fucking flat out hate and they are defiling the book they claim to follow to justify it.

Christian Taliban is about the closest description. The US is being dragged backwards by these hypocrites both in social and scientific pursuits.

Its crazy how you have senators of states proposing all types hate bills yet there seemingly has been more outrage at the NFL and sports situation in general. This is so much bigger yet the fever pitch is not there. The actions of these men and women will effect far more people.

I'm sorry, your religion doesn't give you the right to discriminate.

The right? The way some of these cunts talk about it it's more like a requirement for some people.

It's bad enough when individuals act on homophobia but to enshrine it in law... fuck, this makes me so angry.

Well, we are well known for our stupid politicians. This will be heavily protested.

Two of those reps are in the Greater Atlanta Area, a bit surprising I'd think it would be reps from far south.

It's a model bill being shop around by some conservative think tank. It's going to pop up in pretty much every deep red state it seems. I'm surprised Texas hasn't proposed one yet.

So... is there a reason why all those laws are restricted to gays and not all "sins". You know, adultery, theft, lies, gluttony, greed, pride, envy, wrath etc. Why do they feel the need to treat homosexuality as something special among sins?

Gays are being used as a scapegoat, and are one of the few groups not covered by anti-descrimination laws. Currently, gays are not considered a suspect class per federal law, due to the pressures of a lot of conservative government types.

This law exploits that loophole by claiming that not allowing people to discriminate in terms of services is a violation of their religious beliefs, and religion is a protected class.

Discrimination against the glutenous class in Georgia would certainly cover a large percentage of the population.

Is Georgia like a serious shithole or something? I feel like every day there's some backwards arse story coming out of that one state.

It's a decent enough state (lived there for 30 years) but you'll find religious extremists in pretty much any part of the south.

Agreed. Actually I would go so far as to say religious extremists AND assholes can be found pretty much everywhere.

Easiest way to think of GA is something of a microcosm to the US on the whole---a maddening bastion of wasted and wasting away potential with a good number of awesome folks doing their best to do it right whilst a good many more influential folks get in pissing contests about who can be more reactionary to drag us back to a nonexistent past messing up the whole lot of it.

Things really accelerated back in 2000 and the 2008 crashing and whatnot in particular in terms of the jackasses getting traction here.

I can't understand how this is allowed - does it relate just to discriminating against homosexuals, or if a business owner says their religion hates black people for example can they use the same justifications to throw them out?

What is wrong with people that they want to do this.

I think the difference is that gay people aren't a protected class yet.

It's really funny, because all this is going to lead to is them becoming a protected class.
