Apple overhauling Apple Maps in iOS 8

Ironically the last 2 times I've gone on a road trip into the boonies and used Google Maps since I figure it's a safer bet, it has had issues that when I go back and look in Apple Maps, it would have gotten me there correctly.

You can't even compare the two when it comes to POI however.

Sounds awesome. Siri's Turn-by-Turn directions make Maps the navigation app of choice for me over Google Maps.

Google Maps has turn by turn. When I went to South Africa and Apple Maps tried to take us the wrong way onto an interstate on ramp SEVERAL times, we moved over to Google Maps and had zero issues. I will never trust Apple Maps again.

I got lost in New York while trying to find Momofuku Milk Bar one night using Google Maps while Apple Maps got me there.

Might've had to do with the buildings but it took forever for Google to even find where I was (I was standing in front of Trump Tower).

Interested to see their take on augmented reality, how they handle indoor mapping and if they continue with the same data sources for their layers.

Apple Maps doesn't ever need to be better than Google Maps, it just needs to reach that essential point of "good enough." It's not there yet, but it will be. I don't give a shit if it's got perfect mapping of every dirt road in the Australian Outback, just get me around my life without my having to think about it, please.

Once it *does* hit that essential "good enough" point, I'll use it over Google Maps because it's fully integrated with the OS and because I'd rather not give Google more of my data than I need to. It's not there yet, though.

In general, this is both true and false.

Sure it only needs to be "good enough" and people will find it fine. But to get a mass exodus from a current norm, you have to be pretty exceptional.

That said, apple maps is the default for idevices, so "good enough" will be fine.

I actually love apple maps. POI and search is far superior in google maps, however.

Outside of adding transit directions back in, though, this sounds like it's more of a services update than an OS one. I hope iOS 8 has more exciting stuff to offer than this. (brilliantly simple metadata/extension-based file manager instead of siloed per-app file storage, plz)

Whats coming?

Data level changes to improve reliability
Adding signifantly to the DB of POI
POI search being overhauled

Updated cartography design to find roads more visible
Public transit info and schedules (apple purchased hopstop and Embark)
Indoor mapping
Car integration
Augmented reality
These two would help it tremendously. Navigation works perfectly for me here in Atlanta. It's just the POI database that is severely lacking.

Yeah, but he said Siri. I say "take me to Sarah's house" a lot because it's just much easier to do in the car.

Apple Maps surpassed Google Maps a while ago. Apple maps is far more accurate at taking you right to the front door of your location while Google Maps tends to cut out when you get close. Apple Maps also does the turn by turn navigation much better.

When you car hits a brick wall that Maps doesn't show, then consider your reality augmented.

For me you mesh Google Maps and Apple Maps and you have the perfect app.

Google's lost a lot of usability when they split from Apple. I don't want to sync my contacts through your stupid Google account you fucking fascists.

Apple Maps is far improved from what it was at launch, and event then I didn't have that much of a problem with it. It is pretty much my default navigation app now, although I will agree that it is lacking in POI data.

Still, it is great to bring up the Maps app on my MacBook, search for a location then automatically send the directions to my phone. I did this earlier today as I'm learning my way around a new city, and it worked flawlessly. Out the door and on to my location in a matter of minutes.

The irony here is enough to crush an elephant. iOS is the king of pushing you to use shit you don't want to.

Augmented reality, if its anything like the City Lens or Here Maps apps on my Lumia, will definitely be nice to see. I'm a big fan of City Lens, always something cool to show off.

It's funny.. we used Apple Maps for the first time in forever and naturally we ended up wasting like 13 minutes going downtown Toronto compared to what Google Maps was telling my other friend.

You do know it's Apple that prevents Google from having direct access to the contacts on iOS devices, right?
...they are directly accessing the contacts on iOS when they ask to sync them through a Google account.

I don't know what you mean, unless you meant Apple prevents direct access to contacts without asking for explicit user permission. Access to contacts has been around a long time.

I love this feature on Google Now! I prefer actual info gathering via a laptop then when I'm about to leave, just open my Nexus 5 and go and navigate using that.

I haven't used apple maps since google maps arrived on the App Store

I barely have, and the couple of times I yielded to the convenience of Siri for the sake of driving, I was led to the wrong location by at least a few blocks - presumably down to bad POI data. And this is in San Francisco, where I would assume the testing is the most rigorous. I can only imagine what it's like in more remote locations.

They've got a long way to go.

This has been my experience as well. Google maps got me lost twice in the last six months. And I've noticed Apple maps having more accurate traffic date.

I stopped using Google maps recently.

i can do this on my phone which is an android

im confused

oh youre saying that siri can only interact with apple maps instead of google maps? man that sucks

I keep both on the phone for now. POI data definitely still needs a lot of work, but turn by turn has been pretty solid through Apple Maps for my usage. Obviously the performance and speed of Maps is excellent. Street View is still a big reason to keep Google Maps around, though.

Heard this on the radio today, and I'm glad to hear it. Like Apple's app better, and hate How Google Maps won't play music when doing turn by turn (unless there's a setting somewhere I don't know about).

The thing I want the most: smart directions. Apple, the iPhone learns what places I frequent, and knows where I live and work. When leaving home, I KNOW how to get to the freeway I use every day - don't tell me that part. And when getting directions from a meeting back to the office, I know how to get to work when I'm past a certain point.

As an iOS developer these things all sounds great. This coupled with the refinements in iOS 7.1 got me really excited for WWDC in June.

That would be appreciated even if i highly doubt it will be as good as Google Maps.
I don't mind at all having the Google app but i always prefer using native stuff.

Since I hate giving Google any more of my information Apple is my only real choice on iOS. It generally works fine except the few times it takes me to the wrong address.

Apple maps was bad in NYC. Had to use Google.

People are talking like giving information to Google isn't equal to giving information to Apple. "Oh thank god I'm safe now"

Only use google maps for transit directions. Apple maps is much better integrated for driving and walking directions.
