Apple overhauling Apple Maps in iOS 8

It's funny.. we used Apple Maps for the first time in forever and naturally we ended up wasting like 13 minutes going downtown Toronto compared to what Google Maps was telling my other friend.

Why didn't you look at the map and see where the destination was before blindly following it?

Google Maps has turn by turn. When I went to South Africa and Apple Maps tried to take us the wrong way onto an interstate on ramp SEVERAL times, we moved over to Google Maps and had zero issues. I will never trust Apple Maps again.
Her directions, as in, the way she gives directions, are much better than Google's.

public transit info. that's all i needed.

apple maps is pretty but totally useless for me without it. for that period where apple replaced Google with their in-house solution and we all had to wait for Google to release their own mapping app for iOS? Yeah, that was hell for me. I'm constantly making my way around the metro area and I need directions and bus routes for unfamiliar locations. Apple really left me in the dust.

i'm on android now but the iphone 6 will be on my radar for an upgrade later this year.

Win me back, apple.

Apple maps was bad in NYC. Had to use Google.

People are talking like giving information to Google isn't equal to giving information to Apple. "Oh thank god I'm safe now"
It's not the same. Obviously the NSA is likely getting information from both but Apple doesn't sell your shit to advertisers (and advertisers are actually pretty ticked off about it).

Wait a minute, why would this be necessary unless Apple Maps was a hot fucking mess today? Because certain GAF posters keep telling me it's hunky dory now.

It's been nearly two years. We are more than past the point where Apple have demonstrated they have no ability to do a mapping application dataset, and there is no reason to suspect even if they want to they'd suddenly get any better at it. It remains the case that with little investment and no search engine they have a significant structural data collection disadvantage that cannot be countered, even if they were to do a better job than the embarrassment they are today.

It's a waste of time. Let users select their mapping programme. And kill Apple Maps.

Talk about gross exaggeration. If Google Maps is so perfect why would they ever update it? Why did they acquire Waze? Will they be integrating some of Waze's features in the future? Maybe they should have just let user select their mapping program??!

Apple Maps has some issues, but it has greatly improved sine release. And the turn by turn screen is way better than Google Maps. If they improve POI data immensely an add transit data, I may switch permanently.

Apple Maps surpassed Google Maps a while ago. Apple maps is far more accurate at taking you right to the front door of your location while Google Maps tends to cut out when you get close. Apple Maps also does the turn by turn navigation much better.

I've found this to be largely inaccurate in both cases. I still have some issues with Apple Maps that are not found when using Google Maps. One thing I've noticed is that both apps struggle a little bit with the highway system here in Texas since so many have a frontage road right next to them. The GPS can't quite tell if you're on one road or the other quite often.

Obviously the transit thing is just an absolute mess and the fact they never patched it into the existing version of Maps is truly dumbfounding. The other major issue I have is with Siri's turn-by-turn -- she doesn't give enough notice quite often. I like the look of the turn-by-turn within the application though.

Oh please. Google Maps never has to announce that they're actually going to start doing things as basic as transit or POI.

Err... Android does let users select their mapping programme.

In the UK it may have actually regressed slightly. It certainly hasn't improved. There's (marginally) more data, but if anything it's even less accurate.

Turn by turn is an irrelevance.

Not an early Steam user, I take it? ;)

Honestly Google had a 10 year head start on this as well as a fleet of cars, they are extremely hard to compete with in geo.

It's obvious that they are concentrating on their larger markets first. Users in the US have reported improvements. And Apple Maps in China is far better than Google's offering, which doesn't have turn by turn, has fewer POIs, and doesn't have road construction notices. I've used it just fine in China and the US, on long road trips across states and provinces.

p.s. you can use Google maps without a Google account

Amazon's sales approach is too pushy; Apple is too reticent to foster relationships. Most frustrating: Neither is willing to cough up enough of the consumer data that attracts advertisers to them in the first place.

Google's an ad company first and foremost - that's how they actually make their money. Apple's a hardware company. Do the math.

But that's the point isn't it?

As an end user, I don't care who had ten years head start. In the same way I didn't give a shit that Sony wanted to built it's own processor infrastructure for the PS3 and learned they were no fucking good at that either.

The product is out today, competing against Google Maps today, expecting to be used today. And it fails, comprehensively, on every possible level. It is inconceivable it will ever even begin to catch up too.

And yet Apple thought it was a good idea to ruin their platform by making it fundamentally tied into the OS. Cook should have walked over it, not just Forstall. It's not like Cook hadn't seen iOS6 before it shipped. He was CEO. It was his decision not to pull the launch.

Since I don't give a shit if google has more of my information (I, for one, accept .....etc.), Google Now + Google Maps = godlike. Apple has a LOT of catching up to do.

Oh I'm not saying you should care. I'm just pointing out the situation.

I don't think it will take them 10 years to catch up and in some ways they never will, but clearly Apple thought the maps stuff was far too strategic a function/dataset to let Google keep the keys on. It is hardly "inconceivable that they will ever catch up", I am totally conceiving it right now. The CarPlay stuff makes a lot of sense doesn't it. This move is totally unsurprising to me - of course they are going to improve it, and make announcements that get people to "look again" – but they more than likely will undergo another, smaller brief wave of ridicule again while picking up a few more users. I am with the others that prefer the Siri directions; I use both on my phone. My quibble is with the old default apps situation, not the existence of both, really.

Google Maps didn't always have transit info. I don't see why you care that they are announcing it. Apple Maps has POI, the announcement is more about overhauling how that data is processed. Waze doesn't have transit info and people use it all the time. In fact, I use it even when I know where I am going because it is awesome with traffic redirection and police alerts. If Waze announced they were adding transit info I would welcome it, not act all pissed off for some strange reason.

I was being facetious. And I have no problems using Google Maps on my iPhone either.

I seriously doubt it has regressed.

Turn by turn is an irrelevance.

Not if you drive

You are acting as if competition is a bad thing. I welcome Apple Maps creating a solid alternative and helping push Google to continue to innovate as well.
