Plasma, LCD, OLED, LED, best tv for next gen

So I bought a panasonic 50" s60 a few months ago. Just some quick thoughts on it coming off a 2008 era Samsung 720p plasma, and not being very knowledgeable about TVs.

- Blacks are much "deeper".
- Works great as a monitor, after screwing around with the picture options for a while.
- Have experienced zero image burn. I run the screen wipe every once in a while anyway.
- Gaming on it is heavenly. BF4 and AC4 look absolutely stunning.
- The Smart TV features are slow and clunky. Very bare bones but will get the job done if you really have nothing else to hook up to it that will play netflix.
- Input lag is not an issue at all to me. Haven't noticed it at all. Then again I never use traditional monitors for gaming so I have nothing to compare it to.
- 2 HDMI ports is a real bummer.
- Glare is an issue if I leave the blinds open.
- Tons of picture options.

Overall I think it was a great deal at $600. The IQ is stunning to a laymen like me. Price was fair. Other TVs Ive looked at it in this price range don't look as good to me.

There's an open box st60 at a nearby bestbuy. I read about some input lag associated with it but is it tolerable? Its also being sold for 799 btw, without a remote and stand. Is that a good price?

someone said the new firmware helps the input lag but the image link to the results was broken. im still hoping someone will do a before and after test with a millisecond counter. the lag is pretty bad as is.

as for the price its a bit iffy since its missing the stand. sounds like it might be a display unit so I would check on that. should be cheaper if it is.

Guys...I think I just happened upon an amazing gaming TV. I have recently picked up a Samsung UE55ES8000. Check it out...If I was any good at writing reviews, I would do it..! I have played a few hours of BF4, some KZ, and FIFA, and...well, just know that I was blown away. Great buy!

So you recently picked up a 2012 model? Good job. Hope you got it very cheap.

Since I cant update my tv with the tv itself, is there a place I can download the latest update/firmware and somehow update it through usb if thats even possible?

Tv model is w900a SONY , AUSTRALIA.

Thanks!

Yeah, I'm very happy GAF talked me into this tv. For the price, it blows away anything I have ever owned. Friends came over for Pacific Rim drinking game a few weeks back and about midway through, one of them goes "Dude, like..black. Things are actually black and not that grey passed off as black. Did you get a new TV?"

I haven't had a tv for like 2 years. Thinking about taking the plunge on the W900a.

My previous display was the KRP500 until someone stole it while I was away dealing with my new born daughter's congenital heart disease. That thing was a beast.

So, by your logic, my post history and membership status must directly correlate to my ability to comment on what I consider a good choice of television. Right, noted.

Why the douchebaggery? I thought I would be able to make a 'friendly' suggestion, but alas, the internet.

I also have a life outside of gaming...so yes, I have been on a few dates in my time...

That is correct. It retails for about £1700 in most places, but can be found for closer to £1300. It is still a very good television...and I got it for less then £800, so your hopes have come true.

2012 model or not, specifically speaking...it is a great set.

Holy shit I had a nightmare that something happened to my ZT60 and I had to get a Sony 4K tv lol. I woke up and my heart was beating super fast lol

So I have the s60 and was wondering what's the downside of having AGC on? The picture in some games can get a bit too dark with my settings(infamous 2).

Got my 900a home and setup yesterday. As expected, it is absolutely gorgeous. Going from a 42" ST30 Panasonic Plasma to this 55" Sony 900a I am still a little bit shocked at the size difference.

Let's get this out of the way first; no the blacks aren't as good as the plasma set, nor was I expecting them to be. My reason for switching was primarily so I could move the plasma set into my living room for Netflix and movie watching (something it absolutely excels at) while the 900a would take over console and PC gaming duties with some light web/email/word processing duties on the side.

Playing Borderlands 2 on the 900a last night was incredible. Excellent color, excellent brightness and very low response time. And of course the extra 13" inches at the exact same viewing distance is fantastic.

I've done some basic color and option tweaking but I am sure I will continue to fine tune the image as I spend more time with the 900a. I'm already coming up with games to revisit just so I can see them on the new TV (Dark Souls, and Just Cause immediately come to mind). It's a stunning TV in person and I appreciate the recommendation from Gaf!

Did you try lowering the backlighting of the Sony?
The calibrated results show it has deeper black levels than the ST30
Sony KDL-55 W900A (0.0274 cd/m2).
Viera TC-P50ST30 (0.0462 cd/m2).

Watching/playing my W900 at night, I usually turn the backlight to 2 or 1, and have brightness around 46-46. Blacks are pretty damn great.

Well, I ordered a W900a from Amazon. It's scheduled for Thursday. Got it with the Square 4-year warranty. Perfect timing for Infamous and Metal Gear Solid.

Any good setting recommendations for the w900a? I have it but have not touched the settings minus the motion crap since I got it because it looks amazing out of the box. I tried doing the WoW calibration but got overwhelmed by it pretty quickly.

What's the best projector out there for terms of picture and response time? I really want a projector that's going to handle shooters great....no point in having an amazing picture quality if you can't even shoot straight due to input lag

A projecter? lol... It does sound pretty cool to be able to move your display around easily but isn't that EXTREMELY outdated? lol.

I set up my W900A last week coming from a 5-year old Panasonic plasma, and I was floored by how much deeper the blacks are on this LED set. I'm not sure if that speaks more to how crappy that Panasonic was with its rising blacks, or how good this Sony model is, but whatever the reason it's pretty great.

The past few days I've been tweaking the settings, and most the time I think the set looks too contrast-y, or the blacks looked crushed, but WoW tells me otherwise and I think it's just I'm not used to seeing blacks so dark.

I do see the issues with uniformity and clouding though - although it's not terrible. Honestly, between that and the mild IR from the plasma, I call it wash. Pick your poison.

The lack of buzzing was strange at first. When the first bright/white screen came onto the Sony, I could have sworn I heard a phantom buzzing lol. Like how an amputee can still feel their limb. As odd as it seemed to me at first, it sure is nice having a completely silent set.

I think the WoW disc is about as easy as it gets. Try again. Do the basic setup steps and listen to the Instructions before doing so. Use the bar tests to set black and white levels - that's probably the most important.

As far as W900A specific settings go, I would recommend turning off the Light Sensor under the ECO options. It made a noticeable difference for me. If you don't, the set will automatically adjust levels depending on your rooms lighting conditions - in theory.

Son of a bitch! Samsung you were my last hope! I better figure out how to get a F8500 PDP sometime this year *gulp* :-(

Well damn guess it's not looking good for the future of Plasma.

Guess it'll be goodbye to true black levels & smooth motion handling! We will miss thee.

For those with the ST60 the update finally showed up today for the lip sync issue. It did indeed seem to fix it and to me the menus seem a little snappier as well, could be myself imagining things on that though. I never noticed the input lag really so maybe someone that was more perceptible to it could see if they felt like it improved any or test it officially.

Had my W900a for a few months now and love it. Made a few tiny adjustments here and there, but just realized I didn't touch the settings on my ps3. So 3 questions, I currently only use it for BR movies:

1. BD/DVD - Dynamic Range Control: Auto, Off or On?
2. RGB Full Range (HDMI): Limited or Full?
3. You Pb/Cb Pr/Cr Super-White (HDMI): Off or On?

easiest way to see if its improved is to run the input lag test here. you need a camera and a computer/laptop since you have to clone screens. instructions are on the site. so hopefully a gaffer can do this.

do the test a few times before the update. then do it again after the update. if the lag has been tweeked the difference between the screens will change. don't forget to share pictures of the results.

I'm going to have to get my first plasma sometime. LCDs are good for monitors, but I am extremely sensitive to the ghosting, I can notice it a mile away on 5ms response time. CRTs have way too many issues with geometry. I have a ton of em now and not one has really satisfied me due to this as well as lack of options and clarity. OLED is too far off.

It's only temporary goodbye - true black levels and smooth motion will be back once OLED tvs with strobing come to affordable prices.

Well, it is a bit too late now to do it "sometime". Panasonic TVs are getting hard to find and Samsung is also stopping with bringing out a new series.

So you might end up waiting for OLED anyway.

1. BD/DVD - Dynamic Range Control: Off
2. RGB Full Range (HDMI): Full
3. You Pb/Cb Pr/Cr Super-White (HDMI): On

But it's vital that you also to set your W900a to expect a Full RGB signal via. the HDMI port that you're using. It's in the Home menu settings somewhere, I forget exactly where without being able to check. But it's self explanatory when you find it.

and it's not like your current plasma is going away. Mine's from 2007 and still looks amazing. By the time tech has caught up, I might be just looking for a new set. But maybe not.

I hate to bump this again but I didn't really get a clear answer last time, since it seemed to me like the two posters who answered my questions contradicted each other.

I only use my PS3 for BR movies, and according to Lima above they don't use the Full RGB range. I read that they actually use Y Pb/Cb Pr/Cr. I would like to know if these two statements are correct, if so I think I would use the settings bolded below.

1. BD/DVD - Video Output Format: Auto, RGB or Y Pb/Cb Pr/Cr
2. RGB Full Range (HDMI): Full or limited
3. You Pb/Cb Pr/Cr Super-White (HDMI): On or off

Thanks for any help you can provide.

So sad for plasmas, I love my Pioneer 4280XD, but recently rivals Samsung and Panasonic where starting to get colour reproduction like the Kuros, and i probably would have upgraded my 720p set to 1080p Plasma in the next couple years. I still love the warmth of a plasma set. My LG LEDs pale in comparison even at 1080p.
