Plasma, LCD, OLED, LED, best tv for next gen

Did you see the pricing on the new Sony TV's? They were obviously cutting MANY corners to sell them at that price (when's the last time you saw a new Sony 47" at $649 which is the MSRP on the 2014 W600B).

This is exactly why I wanted a 2013 model. Even without the benefit of any reviews I knew that the huge price drops pretty much across the board would not mean good things for the quality of the product.

Is/will the Sony W7 series be available in the US? I'm considering picking up a 32W650a, and since it rarely goes on sale, I might buy just buy it off Amazon unless a new model is soon incoming.

Here's the CES model "reel":

-> http://store.sony.com/WFS/SNYUS/en_US/-/USD/-cms-ces.2014.television.landing.page

Long story short, W950B sucks balls and I don't see W700B, listed, no.

But things change, 42W650A was supposed to be unattainable in US for some reason and towards the end of the year we've heard of a few, I never realized how because they were unavailable on the site, but I don't live there. Who knows.

Also, for the record, 32W650A are not so hot too, the W650 model everyone was drooling for was the 42" W650A (and the 50" also delivered), the 32" one was not up there with them, more lagged et all... not an impressive TV at all.

Thanks. Yeah, I read that the 42" is the preferred model due to low input lag, but I'm not a competitive gamer, so I don't believe (I hope) that the ~30ms would be too much. I just want something adequate for both video and gaming, and to be honest, even 32" is overkill in size for my needs. (Parents have a 32" Samsung, that thing is huge)

I'd glad take any other recommendations for a 32". I've considered a Plasma, but I think the image retention would be a problem for me.

EDIT: Looking at the link, the 40" at $500 looks good, but with the mentioned cost-cutting in the W950, it could suffer from the same issues. The 32W650 is $550 on Amazon right now. I'm scared. Do Sony models normally get discounted before the new ones drop?

HDTVTest's review of Sony's 2014 successor to the W900 is now up.

Use's an IPS panel with even worse native contrast than last years W8 range! What the heck were they thinking. Needed to be full-array local dimming to mitigate the IPS blacks, they've really dropped the ball here.
what happened is that Premium LCD based TVs these days are moving to 4K only.

W900 was the last premium 1080 set that Sony will ever release.

Either way, im glad I sprung for the 900 instead of waiting. It has the best blacks ive ever seen since the Elite and the HX950

In the case of jumping the gun for a 32W650A... I'd wait.

They're not gonna be worse, unless Sony goes IPS panel all over it which is unlikely (the backfired plan on the W950A was full array local dimming or "X-tended Dynamic Range" as they call it)

Worst case scenario, it'll be a 32W650A with 40". Best case scenario, it'll be a 42W650A with two inches less. Scenarios falling out of those two options amount to 5% at best.

Murphys Law of shipment woes directly correlated to the level of anticipation.

Apparently CEVA "lost" my W900 somewhere in Indiana. Amazon, helpful as ever, is working with them to try and find it, and if they can't they'll ship out a replacement immediately.

That stinks! Hopefully they will find it ASAP or get you a new one ASAP.

I ordered a TV from Amazon a couple of years back thinking it would ship with the same speed as other Prime offerings but boy was I wrong about that. It took the trucking company a week to call me to setup a delivery time and then another week before they actually delivered my TV. I'm not doing that again if I can help it and that's why I bought my set at Best Buy and will pick it up on Saturday.

Holy shit this years W9 ( Sony's flagship 1080p set) performs worse than last years entry level Vizio. It'll cost about 4X as much to add insult to injury.

WTF ? Why would they do that ? At the very least they should've just re-released last years W9.

Last years? Try 8 or 9+ years. That's a static CR of less than 700:1, even 2005's XBR1 was well beyond that.

So my refurbished Benq W1080ST projector came in from ProjectorSupercenter which I got for $800. I don't have a screen yet so the images are from a bare off-white textured wall. The projector is sitting 5 feet from the wall, 17 inches from the floor and it's projecting a 100" image that's about 87" wide & 49" high. The fans emit a soft hum so it's not noticeable. Other than getting a screen and a level coffee table(it's sitting on boxes now) it's really good out of the box using SmartEco mode. I thought that 100" would be too big but it's just right for movies obviously and playing games especially Arma 3 where I can spot soldiers in the distance. I'm sitting about 8'7" away.

I'll borrow a blu-ray player and get a better camera. I have a blackout cloth screen coming in tomorrow. I also upgraded the firmware to 1.5 per AVforums Benq W1080ST thread as it came with 1.2. I didn't notice any improvement but I only used it about 2 hours before upgrading.

Anyone know what's going on with my plasma here?

It's a Samsung PS58C7000. It's a few years old and it's a great TV, but for some reason when there's lot of white on the screen, I get this weird distortion like in the picture. I don't notice it so much when watching TV, but it's pretty prominent when playing WiiU or browsing the net. Any idea what the issue is?

I'd expect that kind of Contrast ratio from a $300 Sceptre, not a $2k+ Flagship Sony. It's embarrassing really. I guess they're going all in on 4K and essentially ditching 1080p.

If you think about it, it's really really sad that lcd tech performance is stuck where it was almost 10 years ago. If possibile, it even got worse, as my 2006 ccfl backlit Toshiba at least had perfect screen uniformity.

And plasma, that still was improving year after year, gaining deeper blacks, more luminance, even better motion, gets discarded?

This is a terrible gaming TV. Aside from low input lag what else does it do well ? Motion is a downgrade from last years model, black levels are record breaking bad for a flagship TV. The blacks are like Olevia bad, or Sceptre bad. This TV is a huge Fuck You to Sony customers. They're going to charge $2k + for this turd. Did you see the god awful screen uniformity from the pictures? Holy shit !

You'd be better off getting the W7 if you must have below 20ms lag.

It is IPS panel, with all good and bad that comes with it.

For most of us, thats actually better since W8 is considerably cheaper and now has great picture to boot.

It could be line bleed, but I'm not sure. Do you have a picture that shows the whole screen when this happens?

Probably bad capacitors in there:

Similar effects (I'm sure you'll agree) on an ancient plasma screen, that could be salvaged.

Service it asap.

Hmm, thanks for the heads up, looked like a voltage problem, I still think it should be related, but shame it's widespread (or, if Samsung comes forward for it, good thing it's widespread then).

Not fun though.

Has anyone seen an input lag test on the Panasonic st60 after the firmware update?

A poster on another forum claims someone posted results but never included a link. Avs is useless as fanboys claim the lag is made up by trolls.

I posted earlier in this thread asking about LG plasmas, and ended up buying the LG 50PM6800. My impressions after 9 months of ownership is that I'm in love with it. I love its picture quality for Full HD movies, I love how good games look on it, and I love active shutter 3D. I really can't believe how soft, vibrant and real everything looks compared to the jarring sharpness of LED TVs; I can't imagine ever going back to a LED or LCD.

There is one small fault, it's image retention. Although I've had no image burn, after 9 months of use I still get image retention, especially when the panel is cold (first 5 minutes or so?), it's especially obvious on black screens, but these usually go away in seconds as soon as there is a moving image on the screen. Is this normal behavior for all Plasmas?

It's normal for LG plasmas. They have the worst IR I've ever seen. I saw one that would get IR from a static logo that's was on the screen for literally just 10 seconds.

IR is normal for all plasmas, but for my VT60 I have yet to see any. I do baby it a bit too though, but I've had station logos on for 30min to an hour without any IR.

Samsungs and the old Pioneer plasmas are said to be the the most IR resistant.

LG are the worst TV maker currently except for their OLED effort. I really love them for that.

Other than that? Stay the fuck away from their TV's.

Anyone have a hot lead on any legit site that still has Panny Plasmas left?

Or physical locations if you randomly know of any in the Portland, OR area?

So I've been reading the thread for a while. Some of the games I play the most are fighting games and I play shooters, and MOBAs among other things. Based on everyone's advice and impressions I settled on getting the W900.

I've been planning to get it at Best Buy with 5 years of insurance (assuming they survive that long) because if something were to happen to it in 3 to 4 years I would get an equal replacement at that time brand new because they wouldn't have the W900 anymore. A friend of mine that works the Magnolia side told me about someone who just brought back an old XBR and walked out with a new X900 with no hassle. I've been banking reward points for a while. So I've been watching the price tumble slowly, then out of nowhere after being in stock at most stores for the past two weeks....gone. Lowest it got was 1710 at best buy, but I was planning to price match amazon which got to 1675.

So my question is, does anyone know of a place that has insurance like that? My only options right now seem to be buying the floor model at best buy and just getting insurance on that or buying on amazon with one of their insurance policies assuming it can compare to the Best Buy version.

any help is appreciated

So I'm looking to get a new HDTV to go along with my PS4 purchase and was wondering if the Samsung UN40F5000 40" 1080p 60Hz Slim LED HDTV is the best TV for around $500. According to the link provided in the OP it is, but I just wanna make sure from you guys before I pull the trigger. Thanks for any help!

Think Amazon has one but most will say Square trade.

Check for Floor models in Magnolia, would guess theyre in good condition.

Tell em youre interested in getting their warranty and see if they'll cut a deal on the 900 clearance price if you get it. Should work I would assume.

I'm looking at getting a new TV soon and I was eyeing this one called the JVC sl47bc. I was wondering if by chance anyone on GAF has it and if they do how is it for gaming.

Just picked up a Sony KDL-55W900A, in part thanks to this thread. I glanced at it at Best Buy last week, it was $1999. Today, it was $2700, and they wouldn't let me hook up a couple of consoles to it to test drive it, so I bailed. Good thing, too - Fry's had it for $1499, and they let me test it out. I mostly wanted to check it for color trailing, the only complaint I've had against my old Sharp. It performed beautifully, and I'm posting with my PC hooked up to it now.

Thanks, GAF.

...and I already have a question. It won't stay a the "Game" scene select mode. It keeps changing to "General" on my console inputs and "Graphics" on my PC input.

The manual says to pick "General" to disable auto-selection, but there's no on/off. Picking "General" just puts it on General. I can't figure out how to make it stay on "Game".

edit: the TV was still in store demo mode, so I guess all the changes I made were being overridden periodically. It didn't bother to tell me that until I powered it on the next day.

I recently bought a Vizio 46 inch LED tv, and I am finally being immersed in the wonderful world of 1080p. The model I got was from 2010, but I only paid 300 dollars for it and I am really impressed. The one question I have though, is about motion smoothing. Everybody seems to hate this effect, but I LOVE it. Everything looks great. Is it just me, or do other people like this technique? Hell, I even use it on games, I've tested it and the input lag is the same regardless of if smoothing is turned on or off, makes games looks very good.

be aware of input lag on all hdtvs. I play on a gaming monitor and im so spoiled that i have never played on an hdtv where i didnt notice input lag. Tried all kinds.

You may be very sensitive to input lag in general. Not everyone is. I went from a gaming monitor to a TV for my PC. The input lag in terms of numbers was a huge jump but I am not phased by it. Everyone has different sensitivity levels, and many can adapt if they do notice.

Guys it's not hard to get the 42inch sony W670 model in the U.S. I've had it since December, I use it to play ps4. I was using my monitor before the T.V. had arrived, it's just as smooth as the monitor. I don't know if I can post how to get it in the thread but there's a legit website/big retail store in NYC who does international orders.

Anyone own a F5000 series Samsung? I'm thinking of just going cheap, and getting a 22" for console/PC gaming.

EDIT: Just read about the ghosting problem.

Anybody know of a lighting kit, or technique, to backlight a tv set? I'm getting used to my W900A, and I've noticed with these led sets that their blacks are much better with some sort of ambient lighting.

I'd prefer some sort of incandescent or soft lighting as opposed to harsh white led's.

I should add that the tv is wall-mounted, with not a lot of room behind it.

Samsung: We're out. See ya, wouldn't want to be ya!

http://www.hdtvtest.co.uk/news/samsung-h7000-201403153671.htm

The information came from the HD Guru blog run by veteran industry expert Gary Merson, and has been confirmed by our friend Robert Zohn at Value Electronics, just hours after we published our review of the PN64H5000, Samsung’s solitary new plasma for the year ahead. Our sources in the retail sector have suggested that the same (no H7000 plasma; F8500 to continue) will apply to the UK and Europe too.

While Samsung stopped short of following in Panasonic’s footsteps of completely shutting down its plasma panel operations, surely the end is not far away. The signs were already there at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2014 in Las Vegas back in January, where the Korean manufacturer didn’t even exhibit a single plasma television.

Some people seem to be clinging onto the hope of H7000 being a 2015 TV because Samsung didn't say "no H7000, ever".

They could at least sell the current F8500 with a new 2014 Evolution Kit or something, they're not exactly cheap.
