Just got back from the theater. SO. FUCKING. GOOD. And so much stuff to process for the state of the MCU...

Future movies have an extremely tough act to follow.

And one of the worst ones is on top.

First untested film in a new series that gains a huge audience never does as well as it's sequels.

The two Matrix sequels did better than the first, etc. Building an audience like that is the real key to success. Unless your a event film like Titanic or Avatar, but those huge crossover films are rare, when your grandmother and your little brother are dying to see the same film.

Now rank the Marvel films, with CA:TWS in the mix.

My ranking so far.

The Avengers
Iron Man
Captain America: TFA
Thor
Iron Man 2
Iron Man 3
Thor:TDW
Incredible Hulk

Came back from theatre as well.

Damn that was one nice flick. Imo it nears the first Iron Man in quality. Solid action, nice twist... glad I went.

As far as my impression goes;

Avengers > Iron Man > Cap: The Winter Soldier > Iron Man 3 > Cap the First Avenger > The Incredible Hulk = Iron Man 2 > Thor TDW > Thor

94% RT rating?! Quality comparisons to The Dark Knight and Casino Royale?! This is all very unexpected. Finally, Cap gets his due.

Hmm...

Iron Man
Captain America TWS
The Avengers
Captain America TFA
Iron Man 3
Thor TDW
Thor = Incredible Hulk
Iron Man 2

There are things I like about IM 2, but it just feels like so much wasted potential after IM 1.

This is one of the best superhero films ever made. Marvel, you have my dick shield. Brilliant. Great plot. Everyone gets their moment. Wholly satisfying ending. Never a dull moment. Fans rewarded. Cinematic Universe audiences rewarded. Fucking A.

fuck, the wait for next week will be brutal.

wish i didn't read so many good impressions.

fuck this.

I'm with you on that. I got all excited a day or so ago thinking that this Sunday was part of opening weekend... my girl burst that bubble by telling me it's next weekend. It's been a long 2 days so far. next week will be even longer.

I think this is about accurate. I'm thinking somewhere between $650 million and $750 million worlwide when it exits theaters thanks to the Avengers effect and great reception.

If any film deserves to break the $1 billion mark, it's Cap 2.

And here's my ranking:

Avengers
Captain America: The Winter Soldier
Iron Man
Thor
Iron Man 3
Captain America: The First Avenger
Thor: The Dark World
The Incredible Hulk
Iron Man 2

Ugh. I'm trying to keep my expectations low but it's really hard with everyone heaping praise on this. I just hope I'm not disappointed when I finally see this next Saturday.

A lot of major blockbuster studios need to take notes on Marvel's unorthodox choices for directorial roles.

Choosing Jon Favreau to direct Iron Man, a director who's mostly only been known for comedies and acting. Kenneth Branagh directing Thor, a director who's career is most known for Shakespeare adaptations. Entrusting Joss Whedon, a man who is a huge cult favorite despite no massive successes prior, to deliver one of the most demanding movies in cinema history, intertwining five movies preceding it and all sorts of heroes, in a balls-out dynamic-driven high budget action film.

And now getting the two guys who did a lot of good stuff on Arrested Development and Community to direct one of the best Marvel-related movies of all time.

I don't know what kind of eye for unproven talent it is that Marvel has, but this is how innovators and a new generation of directors are born.

Just came back from it. It was very "meh".
Dragged alot in the beginning, and even though the story was very important to the overall unvierse, I felt kinda bored throughout it.

Really looking forward to this. Haven't bothered with cinemas for awhile but this sounds worth it. Also, coincidentally as news of Winter Soldier was solidifying I was rediscovering the first Captain America and it has sinced moved up behind Iron Man 1 as second personal favorite of the Marvel flicks. May watch again if it is still free on Prime.

This is probably the reality of it. It still feels incredibly daring in hindsight though. Watching the Building A Cinematic Universe documentary it's clear that if Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk didn't work out, this entire enterprise wouldn't have gotten to where it is today. I still think the director they chose to go with for Iron Man was an incredibly risky bet, and even with The Avengers becoming the third highest grossing film of all time, the choice to attach the Russo brothers to Captain America, another low-profile choice despite so many more options being available to them now, seems to have paid off so damn much.

I dunno, it just makes me happy knowing that Marvel can rely on some unproven directors to do a stellar job and want to continue down that path. It's great with a huge degree of fresh film making from directors who could probably only have dreamed about working on these properties, rather than just sticking to the safe big budget ones.

Fantastic movie. I loooved how it felt like it was actually going to have impact in the MCU unlike Thor 2 and such. Favorite movie of the MCU probably and among the best comic book movies period. Scarjo, Falcon, and Fury were awesome supporting characters and Evans is amazing as per.

Depends: if you expect a movie like the original, you'll be surprised.

This is what happens when you hire Joss Whedon to script doctor each of your films. He wrote the first half (best half) of the original Captain America, too.

Crazy directors are crazy. There's an interview with Charlie Hunnam (Pacific Rim lead) about his experience with the movie and with director Guillermo del Toro.

He said he was taking a vacation after the shooting, because they had been doing 12-15 hour filming days non-stop for a while. When he asked Guillermo (who had something dumb like 17+ hour days due to getting there earlier than actors, and editing scenes after shooting was done) if he was taking a vacation as well, he answered something like: Nah, I'm going to finish the last chapters of this novel I've been writing. What novel? You know, after we were done shooting and editing for the day I'd go home and write a few chapters of a novel.

...

Crazy people.

I liked the original up until they went into montage sequences. Then I just went WTF and felt disappointed at how rushed everything else from then on was. And the climax/fight scene with Red Skull was weak. The film was then saved by the fastforward into the future, seguing into "The Avengers" for me. So yeah, all in all the first was somewhat mediocre for me. I did like Evans as Cap and the various supporting characters.

quickly, tell me the plot of Iron man 2 without lookin it up

you can't do it

Sure I can! Some dude wants to make Iron Man suits and hires the crazy dude from Russia with a bird who tried to kill Tony with electric whips during a car race to go do that. The plan backfires spectacularly and Tony has to save the day. Also, Tony Stark gets drunk and Rhodey steals one of his suits for the military.

It starts with a plot thats stupid and pointless, and then about half way through they dump that plot to blow a bunch of shit up on screen.
