The Black Culture Thread |OT6| Monica Enjoys Being Black

Kojima needs to end MG already. Shit is ultra convulated.

Start something new dawg.

It's still fun. I think alot of internet folks get too caught up in the timeline and miss out on how drastically the series has refined and reinvented itself with each new numbered entry.

I still love the universe within the original trilogy, and I think the mainline entries are still the most exciting things in gaming in the AAA space. There are alot of franchises I think need to be put to rest(Assassin's creed ran out of ideas 3 games ago) but Metal Gear is not one of them

I thought the plan was for him to end it after 4 and have a new and younger team handle it? Like their first assignment was MG Rising, but it went to shit so Platinum was called in

4 is the "ending". I don't think we'll ever get a Solid Snake game passed that point in the timeline. So people who want the series to end should be satisfied with that.

As for him still being at the helm I think alot of people get too caught up criticizing Kojima for being a hack writer that they forget he's really a game designer by trade, and honestly he's a pretty damn good one. Part of the reason he still directs Metal Gear games is because he still has ideas for games. He just uses the Metal Gear brand to be able to realize them.

He did Peace Walker because he had ideas for a portable,co-op Metal Gear game, and he's said in interviews that he's making MGSV because that's how he was able to convince Konami into sinking tons of resources into developing Fox Engine. That it would be used for, at least initially, a new next-gen MG game.

In the sense that you're condemning it before seeing it realized and imagining possible outrage in response to it on the part of a group you're not a member of.

All based on your personal opinion of kojima's writing ability and, in your words, maturity. Like you would deny him the ability to even try and tackle this subject matter because you personally don't think he's good enough.

I'm not gonna act like I know you personally, but it just seems so aggressive and sloppy compared to other posts I've seen from you. You're one of the most rational and knowledgeable dudes in here and fgw so this kojima hate seems so out of character to me.

These are just the musings of a fan who's been burned a few times. I would never deny Kojima the right to try something I do'nt think he has the chops to pull off. MGS4 was too ambitious for him imo, and his work up until that point lended itself more to a more concentrated location and story like mgs1. MGS3 has some of the worst characterizations in the series, it's also one of, if not the best game in the series. I simply know to take the good with the bad. You'll never see me praise Kojima's writing because I find the stories are becoming more and more convoluted and contrived. Although I'm a fan of the series, I've always been critical of the series for it's writing. While Kojima is driven to make the characters look more and more real he's complacent with the series poor dialogue(He's a micro manager and fired Jeremy Blaustein for doing his job) and allowed it to stagnate if not regress in it's voice acting. Strangely enough the series might be better off it it took on a cell shaded anime aesthetic. I copped mgs1 back in 98, day one and the game was a trailblazer,it was lauded for the same things I'm chastising it for now, simply put it's fallen off and I'd like to see it return to it's former glory. I think as a fan I'd be doing a disservice by not airing out my grievances. For what it's worth I think the idea behind a boy
emasculating himself, and taking a vow of silence possibly through mutilation to be incredibly noble and tragic, it's very bushido-esque.
But then you see Quiet dressed up in a bra and ripped pantyhose and it seems less genuine and more manufactured more gratuitous and more ...Japan. Ironically it's the series Japanese sensibilities that drive me and many to a series about Western superpowers, spies and nuclear proliferation. It's an interesting interpretation, but it's also it's biggest downfall with regard to narrative as it invites the worst of anime tropes like a platinum blonde pretty boy with a sword(who happens to have seen some shit during his time as a child soldier in Liberia btw). The worst kind of contrivance. I take the good with the bad, but I talk a lot of shit.

Me and some of friends were at this bar gettin some drinks. My guy is friends with the bartender and he gave us a few free drinks when we were already pretty much done. One of my friends passes out at the bar and vomits all over the counter and floor. He wakes up and is all like "who threw up lol?". " .....'twas you monica". Security comes and tries to kick him and his older brother out. His older bro says he aint gotta do shit cuz he's a cop, and he wanted to continue hollering at some chick but he was plastered. They decide to bounce anyways because security decides to call the police. Kid that threw up was laughing the whole situation off, farted cuz he's groce as fuck, and soon realized he actually sharted. He finds some bushes and wipes his ass with his draws and leaves it there. They soon realize they don't have enough money for a cab and head back to the hotel(with the bar they just got 86'd out of) because their car is parked nearby. Security is there with police and my friends get called over.

Cop: Did you tell these men you were a cop?

No.....well...yea, but I didn't mean it.

Cop: Impersonating a police officer is illegal

2nd cop to piss drunk friend: Sir....Are you wearing underwear?(they saw it on security cam)

Cop: Yea...someone is going to jail tonight

That's why I don't think this rumor is true. Kojima said explicitly that he designed Quiet to be cosplayed and to sell figures.

So unless this is like the ultimate troll to make people insecure about their sexuality uncomfortable, I don't think he'd play with his money like that lol. (though I do think it'd be interesting to see the reactions)

but yeah I totally understand where you're coming from. Just the way you presented your concerns and how you were getting pulled into arguments by people in that thread seemed unlike you.

The one thing I disagree with you on is the LGBT outrage. I mean Poison is exactly that and the urban legend behind her origin is EXTREMELY sexist.(Punching girls is not ok. Punching transsexuals is fine tho because they're really just guys right?)

but there are alot of transgender people who love and positively identify with the character.

Not our place to decide what is or isn't offensive to groups we aren't in. Like how white people decide "black" is offensive to us and "african american" is better. Let the people within the group decide for themselves what offends them and then respect that. No need to be making predictions.

Just wait for someone to call kotaku

I hope you sent flowers to his survivors.

I was filled with remorse.

This is what I was drinking on New Years 3 years ago when I caught a security guard who was following me and put him in a chokehold like I was solid snake. I've mentioned this before I think.

Gotta drink Tennessee honey to unlock the good CQC in Ground Zeroes

Shit is good though. Got some through work a few weeks ago and had a good ass time with it

Man. Metal Gear.

From what I understand Kojima's been trying to end that shit since 2, or even MGS1, but Konami just won't let him.

The thing is, as the story get's more fucked up, the core mechanics are still improving with each game. I'm really excited to see Phantom Pain's open-ended simulation style game design.

And yeah, the franchise is facing a real crisis in tone. The reason MGS's story was praised back in 1998 is because of what other console game storylines were like at the time. It was like introducing a Japanese seinen manga to consumers who only had the 80's G.I. Joe cartoon. MGS was pretty much the only game around even attempting to talk about nuclear proliferation and anti-war themes, and even the more recent MGS games are still ridiculously well-researched in their settings. One thing I enjoyed about Peace Walker was how educational it actually was on the subject of mid-20th century Latin American politics. I wish some of those blockbuster military shooters were filled with half as much real information as a Metal Gear game. But as other video games started to feel less and less like cartoons, Metal Gear has more or less maintained the storyline of a manga. I don't think Kojima can do that shit AND tackle the themes he seems to be trying to tackle with Phantom Pain. I've actually wondered to myself if it would be a good idea for the whole franchise to take on a story and visual style like Metal Gear Ac!d -- comic book-styled and not tied to a massive canon.

Thats fucking fantastic...

Metar gear is being talked about?

Can I say something about ground Zeroes/ Phantom Pain?

I hope kojima doesn't Mark Millar/SAO this thing.

The why rape is hilarious thread is heating up. Damn, bish. They out for blood.
I can't judge cause I've typed some dumb shit too but damn.

I hope whatever it is that he does, doesn't come across as juvenile as hell. A lot of the times, I feel he undercuts himself with lame grade school humor or shit created to look cool. I would be happy to see it be all business. I'm fine with the use of humor to lighten the mood (plenty of works of art do it), but only when appropriate. I don't think he has a handle on that yet.

Yea...they're coming for his neck..

I've actually only played MGS in Japanese, so I don't know how it comes across in English, but just from my own experiences playing localized games and working in localization, there are many times where a scene played relatively straight in Japanese is totally reworked for laughs in English, not to mention flat out wrong or lazy translations, depending on the localization team, or loc house if it's outsourced.Usually there's not a whole lot of interaction between story writers on one hand and loc teams on the other barring a fairly large problem, but Kojima dismissing someone seems likely enough.

MGS is a pretty tangled web overall, though. Hopefully Phantom Pain comes out good, because I think the open world and new engine have promise.

Reading that Frozen thread and realising that it has been a very long time since i watched a Disney animated movie. I think also the realisation that i have no desire to anymore.

Their last good movie was walle. Everything after has been watchable but nothing special imo.

I think the "why rape is hilarious" thread is also a good example of why "gotcha" threads need to go away too.

No need to bait people with thread titles like that when there's no punchline. The title alone probably damaged the quality of discussion in that thread more than anything. So many people posting before watching because they expect it to be a dumb joke.

It'd be a completely different thread if OP took 5 more minutes to make a real title and post some context

I won't blame the OP for people not clicking on the vid. You have a point though.

Wall-E? Even the most savage of men teared up at the end of Toy Story 3. Smh @ riding for the psa for obesity and destroying mother Earth and not I believe I Can fly Buzz and Woody.

Wall-E was good by-the-way.

You missed out Esco.

Even just putting quotes around it like it eventually got would have been smart; otherwise it just looks like something he's saying. Have to actually read OPs and links and everything, but when you're dealing with a sensitive subject it's not a bad idea to give more context.

Wreck It Ralph was solid. Up and the Incredibles though are on a tier all their on. Then we go into the old school traditional animated. Lion King, Aladdin are timeless. But movies like Mulan, Hercules and Tarzan were damn good in their own rights. But my favorite goddamn Disney movie of all time that makes Rio feel like a kid and just happy thoughts is fucking Lilo and Stitch.

Yeah even though it wasn't the best I have a soft spot for L&S as well. Heck I even enjoyed the animated series.
