The Nostalgia Critic |OT| He Remembers It So You Don't Have To

Wasn't there supposed to be some kind of video game quiz show hosted by Brad happening at some point? What ever happened with that? Did it ever become a thing? I seem to remember it being one of the bullet points of their Indiegogo campaign.

Last I heard, it's still being worked on.
Then again, they said the same thing about the site redesign.

No, his criticism is valid. The movie is inconsistent with it's own world. The original makes no sense, but this is trying to make no sense and make sense at the same time. It just doesn't work.
 
Yeah I doubt it would affect content creators.

Other groups that I know use blip include AVGN, Team Four Star, and some other.

DuckTales, Darkwing Duck, TaleSpin, good stuff (early on).

I have never even heard of Shnookums & Meat, but I do remember hearing about The Mighty Ducks (rather that Tim Curry was the villain).

Wasn't there a Little Mermaid cartoon? Or was that not on Disney Afternoon?
 
I remember the Mighty Ducks cartoon on One Saturday Morning. It confused years later when I heard of the live-action films and the fact both were by Disney.

& yeah, there was that Little Mermaid cartoon. Though from what I can tell, it wasn't part of the block.

I remember Bonkers from when I was a kid & didn't have cable, so my aunt & uncle who did would sometimes just leave a tape in the VCR recording Toon Disney, then mailing it for me to watch. Looking back, ugh, but at least I understand the Animaniacs jokes making fun of it.

Also Quack Pack made me cringe even more actually seeing clips of it again.
 
i remember bonkers as being the end for disney afternoons for me. i didn't watch gargoyles in part because of it. and i was a loyal rescue rangers, ducktales, talespin, and darkwing duck fan. i stuck around for goof troop on occasion though. and to be honest i saw a little bit of quack pack too.
 
I don't want to look back and find out that any of those shows sucked. I want to keep telling myself that the Timon and Pumbaa show was just as good as The Lion King.

It was. There's a few Doug didn't like and I found the reasoning lacking. Mighty Ducks feels more like a throw back to TMNT if you ask me. He didn't get too much into the overall plot or that deep into the characters. There's also a very interesting history behind Bonkers even if the show is not that great.
 
I watched The Disney Afternoon every day after school all the way until the day the channel it was on was bought by Warner Brothers and became The WB. It's part of why I boycotted the WB until its death. And still do even though it doesn't exist anymore.

It made me feel angrier than when The Super Mario Bros Super Show switched over to the horrible Club Mario. (I wanted to punch those two fucking '90s surfer "dudes" right in their stupid faces.)
 
It's fun seeing this stuff when I haven't seen much of it in forever. I used to really like the Goof Troop theme, but now I find it kind of weak (and his comment about Pete's family is spot on; they were my favorite part of the show). Bonkers was always bad for many of the reasons he states, but the voice is (and for some reason I got the reference even back then) is Bobcat Goldthwait. I never watched Gargoyles (always seemed too forced edgy for me), nor Aladdin (I got tired of the movie after watching it all time time during days with substitute teachers or rainy days).

Also, man is the animation a lot worse than I remembered, especially the Darkwing Duck clips. That stuff looks embarrassingly rough (and the comparisons of Aladdin and Lion King to their respective movies is even more startling).

I then started to grow out of a lot of it, so by the time The Mighty Ducks came along (which looked way too forced as well), I had moved on.

fake edit: Oh man, the stupid Quack Pack cartoon! I remember HATING it (again, I was at that age where I recognized the fake cool/Poochy attitude being forced, and was LOATHED by it).

TOTALLY UNRELATED: I'm still not getting Nostalgia Chick updates on my RSS feed, so I went back to watch her videos since the last one I got (Addams Family) and I'm so happy someone finally did Volcano vs Dante's Peak (but I wish the Critic did it because his would have been more in depth than what she did... I feel like I'm running hot/cold on her output for well over a year).

Yep.

Near as I understand it, Disney cartoons were huge after the golden era kicked off with Ducktales. At the time, there were three big networks (ABC, CBS, NBC) and a bunch of "independent" stations. The networks produced their own shows, while the independent stations bought their shows from the free market known as "syndication". Then Fox decided to become a fourth major network by buying up most of the independent stations, but they still bought heavily from the syndication market, because Fox was just getting started as a network.

The Disney cartoons were syndicated, and were running on the independent stations around the time they flipped allegiances and officially joined Fox. But then a single Disney-owned station in LA asked Disney to screw over a single Fox-affiliated station by refusing to sell Ducktales to them, giving the Disney-owned station an exclusive. Disney somehow thought that was a good idea, so they did it, which kicked off a Fox-Disney war of sorts.

Fox continued buying lucrative Disney cartoons, but they tried to squeeze out the need for Disney by making their own block of Fox Kids cartoons. Disney responded by making the Disney Afternoon, basically circling the wagons, and saying that you had to have all-Disney or no-Disney.

In the midst of this hostility, Disney hooked up with CBS and tried to turn Disney cartoons into a network program over there, starting with Little Mermaid and then Aladdin. But Disney was still making the Disney Afternoon on Fox (they wanted to have their cake and eat it too), and kids were reluctant to change the channel for a shot of "alternative Disney" in the middle of a wall of Disney, if they knew it even existed at all.

CBS eventually got tired of getting a fraction of the ratings they wanted, so they gave Disney the boot. Aladdin was moved to Fox's Disney Afternoon, but the Little Mermaid was apparently made with too much of CBS's money or something, because it didn't make the jump.

Then Disney bought ABC.
 
I find it weird that he talked so little about Timon and Pumbaa despite liking it (I like it too). And he focused too much on Shnookums and Meat, a show which I don't like - never really a fan of gross out shows, Ren and Stimpy included. Only gross out show I liked is Two Stupid Dogs.

Yeah he was too harsh on Bonkers and Mighty Ducks. The former feels more like being uninformed that anything else (although he has points that the show wasted potential on adding Disney cartoons for cameos), and the latter feels like he missed the idea of totally radical animal men being team heroes as a trend in the 90's. Hell, I'd argue MD was a bit more unique compared to the others (not as good as Biker Mice from Mars though).

he kinda did the same to hey arnold back in the day. but at least he watched these shows. hey saw one 10 minute episode ('downtown as fruits') and made several vague statements about how the show was okay or whatever.
 
I started watching some episodes from last year again since I had nothing to do, but can anyone tell me if those skit-parts get less? It was really annoying with the TMZ thing.

His reviews are still like the one before his "retirement" but the new episodes feel shit just because of those skits.

Nope, there are the same amount of skits since the beginning, I know, I am sick of them too.
 
The skits are going to be there forever.
Doug wanted to do Demo Reel for years, but ever since it bombed, he had to fall back on NC. But he still had too many DR ideas to just throw out, so he started putting them into NC episodes. Rewriting them for the format. In the AI commentary, he even mentioned he was going to do a TMZ episode on Demo Reel.

It should be noted that the TMZ sketches are due to the company forcing a take down of his "Top 11 South Park Episodes" video (he rants about them there). It would have been nice had he mentioned that, but he didn't for some reason.

Speaking of Demo Reel: I get the feeling the show would have been better if Brad Jones helped write it.. He posted this on April Fool's as a review of "The Day the Clown Cried", but changed the title the day after.

Demo Reel also would have been better if they didn't do all the "movie jokes", and just stuck with the "process" of making the movie. And really, if they're supposed to be remaking the movies, why are they mocking them at the same time? That Dark Knight episode... urgh. Hell, they made an episode so bad that it was only released on a compilation DVD.

conceptually the show was a mess. doug only knows of very superficial ways of mocking films and that was what he brought to the table in demo reel. donny goes from being oblivious to the quality of his own films to knowing that he's creating mockeries because hollywood 'had it coming.'

like, his attempt at fleshing out donny's character by having him vengeful for the blood of hollywood because it drove his mother to suicide is just so fucking dark and i can't imagine why the hell it needed to be there. if donny was in denial about his poor filmmaking skills and didn't realize he was actually mocking these movies, maybe that's something that could have salvaged the whole concept. and aside from divulging the backstory about his mom, i like the lost in translation episode as a concept where donny's life is a better movie than the ones he films. that's an angle they could have gone with, adding yet another layer of obliviousness to donny.

But doesnt he realize they are bad? At least I dont see any comedic value in most of the skits.
It feels like his bad "movies" over and over again.

I know what he wanna express with the skits, but the execution is bad. Fremdschämen might be the right word to use here.

i had to look this up, but that's exactly it.

i like doug. he's passionate and energetic, so i can at least appreciate that even when he goes off on things he doesn't have a solid grasp on (the ending to holly jolly is not a joke and finn and jake know what they've seen) or if i don't agree with him. it seems that he really dedicates himself to anything even if it's a really bad idea, and when he doesn't realize it... yeah that's pretty hard to watch.
 
Yeah I know like most the best NCs I find are the one with no skits or very little.
The faceoff review I thought was amazing since it was basically old school NC in format. I won't say all the skits are bad but I find that the more to the point they are the better. Some of them just drag on like the stuff in the 8 crazy nights review.
 
It also seems to be up (it's marked private on Blip.tv), but the newest NC is Foodfight.

Considering Jon Tron did a review of this about a month or so ago, I look forward to seeing this.
