The Nostalgia Critic |OT| He Remembers It So You Don't Have To

Smash Bros reveal gave her "jet boots" which take the form of stiletto heels, which seems to have been the tipping point which moved Samus from "strong female" to "wank material" in a bunch of people's minds.
Oh I know (SmashGAF) but I'm surprised it erupted in twitter and shit. Hell if anything Sakurai salvaged the design. Reminds me more of Chell's "pumps".

He's really trying to say the lightsaber fights in the prequels were better than the original...

Kinda hard to disagree.

Just cause something's "realistic" doesn't make it engaging or fun to watch. The original trilogy had a great story and characters to make up for the lackluster lightsaber scenes, which most ignored. Taken on their own though, they're pretty bland.

Eh, I know quoting Plinkett is a bit a cliche, but he was totally right that the prequel fights are just guys dancing and aiming at each others swords, rather than guys actually trying to hurt and kill each other.

I can see where he's coming from. The availability of better effects and methods does make for more dynamic fights. Still, the later lightsaber fights in the OT are very good and in some ways more memorable to me than the ones from the prequels.

Wait, they had non-SE releases? Were they ever put on Blu-Ray?

I would probably put Ian McDiarmid in the #1 spot. I love that man so much in those movies.

The Opera House Scene was a good one. I also enjoyed the creation of the Darth Vader we know, though of course Lucas had to ruin it with the talking.

I do have to give credit in that almost nobody brings up the positives of the prequels. I wonder if he's ever going to do another editorial or it's just lists from here on out.

Nooope. No Blu-Ray.
From what I recall, the non-SE releases were ripped from the Laserdisc versions. Reports on the quality vary.

Maybe Disney will release a Blu-Ray of the non-SE editions in the future. ... I hope.

Yeah, amazing choreography

I'm watching Start Was Clone Wars CG animated series & basically every fight is just that.
Twirling, twists & random back flips, absolutely no tension, story or sense to the actual fights.

....

Yeah if you only watched season 1.

No, tension?

Seriously? There are fights in that series that change the entire series FFS.

I can't take a statement like that seriously.

It's a case of "the greatest sword fight choreographer in Hollywood history" vs "the fight choreographer of Angelina Jolie in Wanted".

NC showed pictures of the Obi Wan vs Vader fight from the original movie, which was by far the worst fight in the original trilogy, due to the fact that it had to be performed by an elderly man and a guy with a bucket on his head.

Bob Anderson (legendary sword fight choreographer from the original trilogy) was no slave to realism, he knew how to have fun with a swordfight while adding layers of intellectual depth (as evidenced by Pirates of the Caribbean and The Princess Bride). "Fun" just wasn't the intent for Star Wars. The Luke vs Vader fights in Empire and Jedi actually speak to the feelings and emotions of the characters during the fight. It adds weight and emotion to the scene, and makes it look like Mark Hamill is an even better actor than Ewan McGregor (not nearly true, but Bob Anderson makes it true in the swordfights).

The prequels had Ray Park, a stuntman and martial artist. So they covered his face with makeup because he's not an actor, and then they filmed a Jackie Chan sequence with flashy CG lightsabers instead of creative props that sometimes hurt people.

doug's constant lack of research is really bizarre. donatello saber? really? it's been 15 years.

there's an interview with lindsay and in the middle she basically says she doesn't like his style of videos because they lack substance, which was fun. she also revealed she structures her scripts ('scripts') more like essays, allowing her to actually find something to say about the subject matter.

I don't think this is a lack of research, just him not caring. I actually didn't mind cause when he brought that up, I realize I don't know the name of it either. Plus, he admitted he doesn't know the name instead of being flat out wrong. I don't mind him not knowing everything there is to know. He's human.

Donatello saber cracked me up.

He's really trying to say the lightsaber fights in the prequels were better than the original...

And he's right. He's only talking about the fight between Obi Wan and Darth Vader in the first film. That was the worst fight in the series. He's only talking about action choreography. The prequels were flashier. He also mainly focused on Ray Park and that bit in the lava.

I'd put Bob Anderson fight choreography over a Ray Park dance off any day of the week.

Lightsaber fights aside, goddamn, even in bits and peices that romance is so utterly terrible.

That dialogue. It's not even that it's cliche...it's the fact that Lucas ACTUALLY put that shit down on a script and had actors deliver it.

I felt like making a thread on the latest video, but now im kinda wary since this thread exists.
my stance of the starwars prequels is that I liked them overall and im glad he saw some good in them even if its just a small sum of it.

Oh snap,
The Lorax in two weeks!
That's going to hurt.

I feel Diet Dreamworks is the most offensive of those, those are by far the most cynical and soulless of the "Diet" films.

Also, wouldn't
Diet PIxar
be Video Brinquedo? Or is that an entirely different level of bad?

Yeah, amazing choreography

While there was a lot of that silly twirling nonsense I'd still take the prequel duels over the original trilogy's.
The sword fights in the originals are only saved by the fact that you care about the characters. Which is a good thing, but the choreography was still pretty clumsy to say the least.

Maybe for the first film, but Empire and Jedi had Bob Anderson, the master of swordfight choreography. His fights actually looked like people fighting. The problem with the prequels is that every blow looks like it's just targeting the opponents lightsaber. It's nothing but sparring, and very little fighting.

Huh, didn't know that.
Maybe they're better on a second watch. I haven't seen the original trilogy since I was in high school. I don't think I'm giving them a fair shake tbh.

For someone with no idea who this is or what he does, but is just curious to this - can someone explain to me how there's a 1000+ post thread about "the end" of someone that was started a year and a half ago?

I wonder what Doug has against Duck Dodgers.
In the video about The Looney Tunes Show, he compared it to Baby Looney Tunes (in terms of quality)
And in the commentary of the Disney Afternoon video (Seen here) he mentions not liking it.

I thought Duck Dodgers wasn't that bad. I mean, what other shows have Green Lantern and Megadeth?

The timing of this video is scary since Bob Hoskins just died. I once read that Tim Curry auditioned to be Judge Doom but they turned him down because he was too scary.

Yeah, the cosmos can be cruel. At least it was a positive video about Hoskins, at least he didn't die after his Son of the Mask review.

No surprise about TIm Curry, being too scary seems to be a common thing. I heard he auditioned to be The Joker in Batman: The Animated Series, but was considered too scary. At least we got Mark Hamill out of that.
I also heard Spielberg wanted Jon Pertwee to play Judge Doom, but that didn't happen.

We're lazy...
We should start a new thread.

was made when he ended his show. now this is sorta the OT after his return lol

He quit the character for a while to do something else. No one liked it. The website lost a ton of traffic and he picked it back up again and no one has ever made a new thread.

At the end of the "To Boldly Flee" anniversary video, Nostalgia Critic was basically killed off and his series was meant to end and be replaced with a series called "Demo Reel." I'm guessing that this thread was made at that time. It didn't last long and Doug Walker eventually revived the Nostalgia Critic with some modifications made to the video schedule.

The review must go on, after all.

Ah, I see.

Would've thought the thread would've at least gotten a new title, but, what do I know I guess.

We should probably also make it a catch-all TGWTG thread for the other contributors on the site like Todd in the Shadows, The Cinema Snob, Linkara, and the many others.

Nice to see an Old Vs. New after all this time, considering the last one was from April 2012 with Manhunter Vs. Red Dragon.

as much as I love NChick though, there are some of his opinions which reeks of perspective bias. Like how she says Mulan 2 is terrible because of how Mulan is out of character with her "an arranged marriage? the one I was willingly doing for in the first film!" comment (Mulan feels like she wasn't agreeing with the whole thing and only did it out of family honor).

But of course as I said before, you can still watch and disagree with their opinions.

And it was kinda an eh episode
