I don't "get" TLOU

I thought it was good. Maybe its just the contrarian in me, but I feel it is EXTREMELY overrated. Sorry, but I liked Bioshock infinite more.

Eeeh, there's nothing to get. You don't like it. It's fine.

Not trying to silence you or anything, by all means, share why you don't like it, but don't try to "get" it, don't try to force yourself through something you don't really like just because it's supposed to be good.

You're just trying to unnecessarily rile people up with that comment.

And anyone who's familiar with your post history knows where your biases lie.

There was a thread today titled "Can The Last of Us win Game of the Year two years in a row?"

I said what I think is true. If your childish reaction to that is to try and call me out for something that, even if true, has no bearing on anything I said, then that says more about you than it does me.

Whatever you say my friend, but I think the one with the problem is yourself.

I like fighting the human enemies. You either kill enemies in brutal ways, or have it done to you, it's all about survival and it feels satisfying. Getting a headshot, seeing that "headshot icon" and half their head blown away, beating the shit out of them with a pipe, plank or axe, taking out a group of enemies stealthy, strategically one by one to whittle down the group without being seen or getting a multiple kill with molotov. It's just brutally satisfying survival combat and I loved it.

Also making weapons out of things you find in the game world is a nice touch I enjoyed.

I don't so much like fighting the infected because they just run at you.

Keep in mind I've only played the game on hard and survivor and the AI was fine. I've heard the AI is quite stupid on easy/ normal to make it so. The game is meant to be played on hard or above.

If it isn't your taste then don't worry about it so much, play what you want to play.

Lets be honest, the Naughty Dog fanbase has been downright awful when they see perceived slights against the company and their games. Surely we haven't forgotten the vitriol from the Uncharted 3 review thread. They are also extremely loud with their lavish praise of TLOU. We've had multiple absurd threads today alone about TLOU and its remake, its like XenoBlade diehards to the nth degree.

It been said already but yeah, there's nothing you really need to get. If you don't like it, that's fine and nothing wrong with that. I share your thoughts on the game pretty much. I enjoyed it a decent amount but I didn't find it to be amazing really.

ShockingAlberto is a Nintendo fanboy?

Huh, that's news to me.

ND's ardent fans can be annoying though it's true, although it is not a trait exclusive to them, also true.

I didn't like it either, although I didn't get all that far. Up to the
sniper part where you have to protect Henry, Sam, and Ellie.

Basically I realized that I was playing the game less for the game itself, and more because I wanted to see how the story progressed.

The horror!

Are you kidding me?! Replace Naughty Dog with any fangroup and the context will be the same. What is up with this BS? Look at this thread for example, I hardly see any Naughty Dog fans in here acting "downright awful" . Really tho?

Sure, but look at this thread. It's been fair and understanding. On the flipside, I once asked if it was worth getting Dark Souls with the sequel coming out so soon and I got attacked pretty much by several people for daring to ask that question. Now that's one shitty fucking fanbase.

The game just wasn't for me. The combat was so disconnected, the stealth was too fuzzy and I was disinterested during every other scene, I just wasn't feeling it. The story wasn't really gripping me past the fantastic opening.

*shrug* I bought it, I tried it, it wasn't doing it for me right now. But for every game I think I'll love and then don't, there's also complete reversals. I'm really enjoying Tomb Raider despite it basically going against everything I usually like. So maybe I'll wait five years, come back to TLOU and really like it. It's happened before.

Demon's Souls wasn't for me either, and probably won't ever be, but you won't catch me saying that too often on GAF.

I do think the ND fanbase is quite annoying these days, but that's just because The Last of Us was a huge thing last year, whatever game becomes the big deal this year will be the same.

Conception II ruined every other game to me.

I'm curious, how far into it did you get? Summer is rather inconsistent with some great parts and some very subpar parts in the initial stretch of it.

Well I would say the main difference would be size. Not that I think this is the worst fanbase anyway, that distinction is reserved for MOBAs and the like.

The production values are insane. It's impressive. The actual mechanics are solid for a stealth game but nothing revolutionary and mostly just functional. The plot isn't as great as everybody makes it out to be. And it's glitchy. It pushes the ps3 really hard. Online was definetely fun for a while. I can see why people like it but nowhere near the best game ever made.

here is a run down of the WORST gaming communities in no specific order

League of Legends
Minecraft
Last of Us, Uncharted
Dark Souls, demon souls...whatever
Borderlands
Call of Duty
(battlefield is getting there)

Not sure how to categorize this one, but Wii U fanboys who refuse to acknowledge that any game not coming to Wii u is good.
Person 1: "Did you hear Arkham Knight isnt coming to Wii U"
Person 2: "Who cares, those games have never been good"

aaaand thats about it

This thread has so many Shots so far....

BANG BANG

Ya shot me! *dead*

Seriously though, cool heads will prevail guys. We know there are overzealous fans in each camp and ND is no different. I like to think of ND as Jay-Z brushing the dirt off their shoulders. You're going to have people who don't like it no matter what so look at the positives for your game and ignore the unproductive criticisms and trolling.

Comments like this are silly.

Pray tell, what is the best game ever made? And how do you quantify being near it?

I don't think people like that exist. Then literally every multiplatform game for the rest of the generation will never be 'good' in their eyes.

everything until after pittsburgh was plain forgettable for me.
Agreed. Bill and the Prologue was the only thing I liked about the first half.

Basically I realized that I was playing the game less for the game itself, and more because I wanted to see how the story progressed. When I feel like I'm forcing myself to play a game, that's a huge red flag that I just don't like it and should stop.

I can't really say why I didn't like the gameplay either. I think it's just that I found the combat to be extremely frustrating and a chore to go through. Something about the shooting just didn't feel good. The stealth felt awkward too. *shrug*
Too bad. Just when the game starts getting good.

People arguing which blind fanboys are worse compared to others is like comparing which shit is shittier than the other shit.

Because all of them are shit.

it's not like I made the comment in a vacuum. It's just a response to people flippantly calling tlou 'best game ever' because of some expensive production values and a story that tries too hard to be poignant. I have no metric for 'best game ever' I jugs know that last of us isn't.

I didn't enjoy the gameplay (too linear, frustrating, shooting was wonky), but it looks amazing and for a game the story and presentation are great, so I just turned it to easy and made my way through.

Might try to play through again in the future, but starting with Uncharted, Naughty Dog has slowly lost my interest as their games become less and less about gameplay.

Too bad. Just when the game starts getting good.

I've always hated this line of reasoning personally. If I can play a game for hours before getting to where the game "starts getting good", then that game can fuck right off, and stop wasting my time.

If it's where the game "gets even better" then sure.

I wish the game had just been closer to a movie. The plot of the last of us just didn't hook me enough to justify wading through the OK gameplay. Naughty Dog could have pared it down a lot and been left with a tight experience that actually executes the idea Quantic Dream has been attempting for some time.

i feel the same way about game of thrones. I watched the first episode and didnt like it. So many people have told me it gets good around episode 5 or 6. Thats like 5-6 hours of me wanting to kill myself to maybe get some enjoyment out of it. The reasoning just doesnt make sense.

Exactly. It's like... I'm going to die not having had anywhere near enough time to have played, watched, or listened to all the things I would have enjoyed... and your advice to me is to spend more of my "entertainment" time with something that's not entertaining me? It's insane imo.

Certainly not the worst, but it does get pretty awful sometimes. If anyone needs a reminder: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=65884681&postcount=824 and http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=32102086&postcount=3251

Yes it does. It is relative to the length of the medium.

If you are watching one of the best movies in and expect yourself to think its the best movie in 10 minutes in, then you're being ridiculous.

Same if you are playing a 100 hour game and expect to love it after 3 hours.

Or a 40+ episode show after 1 episode.

Totally understandable. I suffered through the first few hours only because I was wondering where the masterpiece everyone was talking about was. Fortunately it revealed itself after the 50% waypoint and turned into my second favourite game of the year. There is no other game I can remember that manages such a drastic turn in quality. So yeah normally I would be right with you, but I have to make an exception for this game. I totally understand though that it is probably not worth it for many people.

so I would have to watch majority of something to know if I really like it...yeah, im not doing that. I am not going to watch like 20 hours of game of thrones to maybe end up still hating it and have wasted 20 hours in the process. I shouldnt have to put in effort to allow myself to enjoy something. If I enjoy something, then I just enjoy it

I didn't like it either. Don't worry about it imo; not everyone's into these sort of games. I played through Uncharted 1-3 and didn't like them either. This is probably considered blasphemy on here but oh well.

I will say I do respect the quality of voicework and the technical aspects of these games though.

Tried Uncharted 2 and didn't like it myself.

I just don't like Naughty Dog I guess.

There was a thread today titled "Can The Last of Us win Game of the Year two years in a row?"

The OP of that thread should've been banned. He knew full well that they re-released RE4 this year.

You're such a Nintendo fanboy.

I'm with you OP. I thought it was a good game, but no better than any of the Uncharted games. I voiced my opinion several times, and an army of fanboys descended to tell me I was crazy.

Naughty Dog could have pared it down a lot and been left with a tight experience that actually executes the idea Quantic Dream has been attempting for some time.
Then they would have to switch the genre most likely and write a lot more story or they would have left with a 2 hour long game. TLoU is so tight because a 2 hour story is stretched over 14 hours with compelling gameplay and there are no choices whatsoever. It's a linear experience. Changing that would have most likely compromised the quality of the story. They are both completely different ballgames and not comparable at all in terms of writing workload.

That Ellen Page sniping makes me angry :/
That was a bad day. Same with the thread about the Metro map asset being stolen or something.

You're such a Nintendo fanboy.
Probably the worst on the planet. Don't even own a Wii U or 3DS :(

But I just can't find myself getting engaged by the gameplay, and I can't quite put my finger on why. Gameplay is solid, course, as expected from ND. It's not the stealth element, as I can play the hell out of games like MGS.

Does it get better? Does it change up later, or is it going to be more of this for another eight hours? Because I'm not sure I can slog my way through it if that's the case

Do you climb up on top of stuff like buses or run away from enemies sometimes instead of engaging all of them, etc? Did you turn off listening mode/play on highest difficulty? Play w/ surround sound or good headphones? Not sure what else you could do to have more fun. I ran around all over levels sometimes back as far as you can go or ahead. I also threw a lot bricks and bottles to stun enemies so I could line up a shot or do a one hit KO.
