Black Bullet 1

I have a friend who wanted me to watch this, and while it's not bad enough for me to be angry at him, it's pretty damn bad. The CG is actually the least of this show's problems.

iUg85tsYukfY.jpg

This is the least original villain design possibly ever. The only thing less original are his motivations.

Why was he there (I have some ideas, but still)? Didn't he have a gun? Didn't the protagonist have a gun drawn when he entered the room? Why did they both use their guns on anyone but each other? In fact, how did the protag go from having two hands on his gun to being in a bare-handed fistfight anyway?

At least the fight was pretty animated.

Of course, the constantly-sexualized ten-year-old has to get drenched with sticky white stuff for no reason.

Naturally, the key tool to fight the evil Gastrea are girls (they must be girls because...) born from mothers infected with the virus (which is implied to kill in an incredibly short amount of time, so...). So the protagonist has to fight alongside a ten-year-old girl who wants to fuck him all the time. I mean, it's in the plot.

Really? They're the curse bestowed by Gastrea? I'd think that curse would be the virus that turns people into gigantic bug zombies that brutally attack others. The giant bug zombies so devastating that humanity has to live behind giant fifty-meter tall walls monoliths of Unobtainium.

Black Bullet's first episode runs into every bad exposition cliche in the book, from "It's been almost [span of time] since [important event in our lives]" to "I should tell you basic facts about the job you were presumably trained to do ages ago" to "I'm going to tell this random bystander exactly why things are happening even though the details are completely irrelevant to them". And then they run out of time, so they cut the ED to end the episode with a last minute "Now's the perfect time to reflect on the history of our world." It's lazy as hell. The only parts that they kind of did justice to were the lead-in to the lead doing his job, giving us reasons to explain basic rules because people were violating them, and the little girl's deal with the shot and going to school, which they explain by just showing us things and not telling us them in detail (until they basically tell us all the details immediately afterward, so I guess that didn't last long).

There isn't a single original or interesting concept in the entire setup, and the execution is lazy. Unless you're the kind of person who watches anything with a cute little girl in it, I can't imagine why you'd waste your time with this show.

Guys, I think I've gone off the deep end.

I just bought my first Kindle manga (Negima! Omnibus vol. 1, cause I really enjoyed the animes).

Soul Eater Not 1

Also I have to say Japanese Maka is AWFUL compared to the English version. If she was worse in the original SE I can understand why people who watched the sub probably didn't like it as much.

First rule of anime culture: Under no circumstances is a dub superior to a sub. Based on principal alone.

Also people who watched the sub didn't like it because the story was shit.

Damn last episode (and arc as whole) of Samurai Flamenco is really, really good.. its pretty cool that the most threatening antagonist in the show is actually not in-line with other batshit insanity that happened in the show.. The clever writing really carrying the show from the start and to the end, while they throwing all random shit to you, its still manage to tied down the theme and message that the show had to the very end. Its something that such like Kill la Kill fail to do with the message/character motivation became big mess with no consistency.

Samurai Flamenco is truly the Iron Man 3 of anime.

Whelp, checked out a bunch of the new shows.

No Game No Life, Nanana, and Black Bullet. In addition to Mushishi, JoJo, & Magical School, this is shaping up to be the best season I've had in a long time. I haven't been interested in keeping up with this many animes at once since college.

What a surprise, I thought this season was going to be a garbage fest aside from shishi & jojo.

Knights of Sidonia - Episode 1

Solid start to another show I've been looking forward to this season. It's certainly a more serious attempt at scifi than Captain Earth, but I really hope some of the themes they introduced so far aren't just fluff which makes the setting "odd". I'll actually like for the story to get into details about the social impact of living on a generation ship, having a "third gender", the general laws and governance of such a ship, etc. Clearly they seem okay with allowing protesters, but if that's allowed I wonder how such an isolated environment hasn't suffered outright revolts as the years go by, especially if not everyone is happy about the situation. I guess we'll find out as it progresses.

The animation was pretty good, although I think it does suffer when they try to do more comedic scenes. The art style isn't suited for more stylistic movements, so it ends up looking kinda awkward and clumsy instead. Other than that, I really like how the show was directed, and the lighting and shaders in particular are pretty impressive. There's a very unified look which embraces the sort of environment the show is set in, while the layouts use the dullness in the setting effectively to create visually appealing scenes with a nice amount of depth. I love how dirty and worn down everything looks too, especially in the uniforms and clothing.

I'll say the only real negative so far is that the opening song is pretty crappy for Angela. It just didn't do much for me in terms of setting the tone for the episode or getting me excited. The ending song was way better. The music in the show itself is pretty good too. Overall this is a nice package with strong production values, and it captures the graphic novel look really well which gives it a nice unique look.

As a non-American, Lucky Star is grating. They never seem to get slice of life completely right. Maybe it's not possible.

Need more British voice actors plz

Rowdy Sumo Wrestler Matsutaro 1:
This show definitely has some really nice art. The visuals had a really distinctive look that I appreciated, and it gave it the old school style feel that they seem to be going for. There were some funny moments, although Matsutaro felt a little too monstrous to me. That's obviously the point they're going for, but by around the middle of the episode he seemed to pass too much into cartoonish villainy. I'll probably give it at least one more episode, though, because there is some stuff to like here, and I could see it improving in that regard.

You forgot to mention that the whole sequence is pretty much dropped after that scene. The MC has no reaction to dealing with a guy, who could have seemingly killed him pretty easily. It's just a scene that happens and then promptly dropped.

Well that's true for the entire episode in that it felt like a bunch of disconnected scenes.

Yeah, you'd think he'd mention it to literally anyone else.

Pupipo!

From last season, this was a pretty good show and one of my favorite of the shorter running anime, coming in at about four minutes per episode.

I liked the shows mix of more lighthearted humour mixed with some more darker tones. Personally I liked the character designs and Po-chan was pretty cute. Seeing that double relationship jealousy thing was kind of a funny side diversion as well. I came to like at least the one ending song as well.

The show can have some really pretty looking visuals as well, especially in the more final arc to the story. Despite its overall more lighter tone things got a lot more serious and heavy in the last episode. It really makes you look at some earlier scenes in a whole new light. It looks like it sets itself up for a happy ending though even though things are maybe somewhat bittersweet right now.

On the one hand I wouldn't mind more of the show but on the other this is one story that more or less seems to wrap itself up. Being based off of a manga there may be more story, I don't know.

Anyway, thanks to wonzo for initially bringing this to my attention and others for talking about it as I'm not sure when or if I would have watched it otherwise. Personally I thought it was a really well done show with a good mix of funny and serious and I recommend it to others. As mentioned previously, it's only four minutes per episode so it won't take up much of your time. :)

I liked this much better than I thought I would. The CG had its problems. I still don't like some of the characters movements while they are doing mundane activities and the shading/colouring for them is all sorts of wrong. However, from what we have seen from the action scenes, the aliens, and all the displays for the robots and space ships, they all look pretty great. The real test will be next episode when the actual battle begins so I'm looking forward to that.

Narrative setup seems really familiar to Attack on Titan. I'm not sure if Nihei is up to the task of writing something like and exploring worthwhile themes. His main strength is working on atmospheric well drawn and fast paced action stories. However, with this, you have multiple characters and expositions and background info that you need to go over and so far it's nothing special. Still this is something I'm probably gonna stick with all the way to the end since I'm quite interested in the animation style and what the story might try to accomplish.

And Golden Boy.

Lol no way! I've only seen the sub but I refuse to believe something that japanese could translate well.

STUDYSTUDYSTUDY just doesn't have the same gravitas as BENKYOBENKYOBENKYO

Not true. Johnny Young Bosch as Lelouch in Code Geass was a big reason why I liked it so much. He pulls off his attitude so well.

Dude I couldn't stand a single one of the english cast in that show. *shudder*

Count of Monte Cristo 2-5
A very interesting show, feels like i'm watching a Romantic play(well it's based on the work of the same name of that era so it isn't surprising). So much symbolism. All the women either seem to be weird or have an unrequited love. That soldier guy Morals seems to symbolize simple and honest lifestyle while the aristocracy seems to be corrupt and poisonous to itself like smoking in a closed room. Peppa seems to be representative of the devil tempting Albert slowly corrupting him. I am still enjoying the art style but Paris looks terrible in CGI.

Dragon Age CG future is here!

PPOlXAsl.jpg

BioWare really is influencing Japan though, because we have this stupid third gender bullshit (but she happens to have the sex characteristics of a woman because otherwise it'd be boy on boy and that is yucky). :p

But beyond the look, this is yet another shounen power up mech show. Zzzz.

Have fun!

Doesn't sound like much of a friend to me! :(

It wasn't a particularly strong demand, but he said that it was "hard for [him] to find things that were altogether wrong with it," so that was kind of an invitation.

You guys description of bad anime/episode is always more intriguing than the supposed good ones, godammit...

Everyone knows it's easier to write an amusing review of something bad than a review of something good, for a lot of reasons. For example, you can't really write praise that makes someone laugh, but criticism and and mockery are frequently funny. Also, explaining why something doesn't work for you is easy, because it usually jumps out. But when something works well, everything feels like a well-oiled machine working together, so it's harder to point to how specific elements elevate things over what they could have been.

I'll try to write a positive review for something else that's as detailed as this negative one, but I can't guarantee that it'll be as intriguing.

You could pick a show you like and write a review of the best girl only.

What the hell?

Guys, girls, Gaffers, anime is not a medium. It's a genre. It's like saying horror movies are a medium. They're a genre of the film medium.

But I see that this argument is going in circles in this thread, so I'm assuming there's no talking sense into you...

Where to begin...
