Will Nintendo "phase out" the OG 3DS?

Mellahan

Concerned about dinosaur erection.
I've noticed an increase in commercials and promotional material specifically advertising the XL and 2DS. Even official trailers and gameplay footage is "displayed" on an XL. At the moment there does not appear to be any concrete signs at retail of the OG up and vanishing... but I do wonder if this media push for XL/2DS is a clue of what's to come.

This got me thinking, too. From Nintendo's Facebook:

See? It's one or the other. No middle ground.

Maybe it's all about ergonomics. Taking a glance at the OG 3DS itself, the design isn't very consistent with that of the XL or 2DS. Perhaps the system won't be phased out, per se, but a redesign is coming down the pike? Nintendo's keeping the current model out of the public eye, or something?

What do you think?

The original looks like a very premium device, which we all know the 3DS is not. I think the look of the XL and 2DS definitely fit the innards of the hardware better.

The original 3DS definitely looks cool, but I wasn't a huge fan of its ergonomics compared to the other two versions of the hardware.

I think that the OG 3DS is the worst designed handheld system Nintendo ever made. It's extremely uncomfortable, and the button placement is awful.

The only positives to that system is the 3 tints of color when closed.

If they do decide to discontinue it, good riddance.

Would make sense given their current pricing. Who's going to jump from a 2DS to a 3DS and not just drop the extra $30 for the bigger screen and better battery life.

Did they phase out the DS Lite when the DSi released?
DS Lite was popular though and had the GBA slot. There isn't much need for the regular 3DS anymore, they should Launch a revision this year. Doubt they are selling many units nowadays.

I really wish/hope they reveal a new model in between the OG and XL something along the lines of how good the DSLite was

I spent a whole day with my 3DS in the pocket of my shorts the other day. It's a nice option to have.

Overall, I enjoy mine and would recommend it.

Replace it with a new normal-sized model with a decent battery and no region lock. I don't like the form factors of either the XL or the 2DS.

Create a 3DS Lite.

I think we may possibly see a redesign at E3. It could be very much so possible, I wouldn't write it out yet.

Id love to grab a 2DS but I have no need for it. XL is an awesome machine. Love the screen size.

I really really hope we get an OG redesign. I want a better build quality for the standard size, I've been holding off in the hopes that they will.

If they don't, I'll get an XL..

Scarce is probably too strong a word, but haven't these been a little more difficult to come by at retail for awhile now? I haven't seen one at Target in a long long time, and they're a rare sight at Best Buy.

Nintendo has been ignoring the unit's existence for a long time now. We should be due for a new 3DS model this year, so maybe they'll cook up something that would be akin to a replacement.

I think they are in the UK. The advert for Layton vs AA in the current issue of Official Nintendo Magazine shows just the 2DS and the 3DS XL and the words: "Choose the 2DS for value or the 3DS XL for bigger screens." (This is from memory, so it may not be 100% accurate, but you get the idea.)

It would also explain why Amazon UK is currently selling the OG 3DS + 3 Games for a very low price.

EDIT: Just checked. Basically what I said above, and the advert for Nintendo Pocket Football Club has the same thing too. It seems to be the standard footer now for every 3DS game ad.

I kind of regret buying an XL. The pixel density is messed up something fierce. Games look so much better on my buddy's 2DS and, presumably, the OG 3DS.

I think they'll keep it around.

It gives a small, 3D capable version for people with smaller hands that value the portability or the comfort of it over the XL.

Personally I couldn't go back to the OG after getting the XL. I owned both for about a year before finally selling the OG to a friend. I'd play games on one and then switch to the other and back again. The feel of the d-pad and buttons as well as the ergonomics was such a big improvement to me that it was worth the bigger pixels.

I liked how the 3D depth is a bit more pronounced on the XL, but the tradeoff was with the sweet spot being harder to keep in focus. And the speakers on the XL were oddly weaker too.

Indeed. The trade off, of course, is tiny, visions destroying screens, though. I will take the giant pixels any day.

Switching back to the OG from the XL after a few weeks is one hell of an experience.
"Why is this screen so tiny?! How did I ever play games on this thing?"

I love my OG 3DS. (Ice White!)

It actually looks premium compared to the Fisher Price XL.
My White XL looks Premium too!

I think they have phased out the OGs because if you buy an OG you're certain to get an older firmware but XL is a hit n miss in that respect.

If they had made the screen size to fit the lid I would probably still be rocking the OG. The PPI on the OG is great, but its 2014, anything under 5 inches looks archaic.

I remember looking at someone's XL and thinking OH GOD THE PIXELS ARE GINORMOUS WHY WOULD YOU EVER DO THIS. So I hope they keep some form of smaller 3DS around. A 3DS not-XL with the rounded corners and the buttons and stuff would be an acceptable compromise (or possibly an improvement, I've never spent much time with an XL so it's hard for me to say).

Exactly. I get that "BIGGER SCREENS!" is a nice sales pitch, but it's a dubious advantage if it's blowing up a resolution that was already pretty pithy on a small screen.

They actually stopped receiving stock for the original 3DS in Canada. I'm assuming an original 3DS revision is coming this E3.

I actually think they might introduce a new clamshell model in Japan, and that would replace the original 3DS. The fact is that like 1% of 3DS sales are now the original one outside of Japan. Everyone buys either the XL or 2DS. The problem is neither of those are very portable imo...

I like the physical start/select buttons, but I cannot stand the 3DS XL screen. Increasing the size of the screen with the 3DS's resolution doesn't do it any favors at all.

I'd love to see a revamped original size model.

Since the DSi (and including the 3DS releases) each DS revision has come out 1 year - 1 year 3 months after. The 3DS releases have had 1 year 3/4 months release between them. If we're following this trend, there could be one at the end of this year/start of next year. The former is the better bet. I hope earlier than this, because I'm looking to purchase a 3DS this summer.
