I know they were going to be bad but man this is worse than expected. They are like cartoonishly evil.

Isn't the senate kind of unstable since the WA by-election? I wonder if they are going to be able to pass everything they've got planned.

Can someone explain the newstart change to me? It sounds like you have to wait 6 months before you get it and then you only get it for 6 months before having it taken off you for 6 months on a rotating basis. Is this accurate? If so, that's pretty incredible.

Age of entitlement over. Too bad.

the word entitlement is finally more obnoxious in a context other than videogame criticism

I was having a conversation with my mother the other day and was shocked to discover that she believes people deliberately not working to live on welfare is a major problem in Australia.

Well this is grim. Anyone want to find a new country to live in?
Hyperbole.

Not hyperbole lol.

The East Asian countries are probably our best bet. Sell the home to the Chinese - move into their backyard. Buy Apartment in Malaysia for 300K. 500K in investments. 7% yield that's 35K a year. 5 K to increase investments 30K to live on. Actually works out perfectly fine. And that's before working there.

You could argue there is a proportion of people who do that, perhaps amongst them are drug users as an example. But I also expect that if you scratched the surface there you would almost certainly find a high proportion of mental issues such as psychoses and the like - ie people who would probably have a hard time managing a "productive" life let alone a job that Economic High Priests assume we all aspire to, such as scrubbing urinals and painting skip bins.

The downside being you'll have to live in Malaysia.

It's okay, I'm Malaysian, it's cool

Of course there are people taking advantage of the system and it's in Australia's best interest to deter or prevent them from doing so, but this kind of measure is just going to catch a lot of people in the crossfire.

The Hockster said:
Asked why lower income earners were bearing “pain” that escalated over time, while high-income earners’ main budget burden was temporary, Hockey said “everyone is making a contribution … and as far as I am aware higher income earners pay the $7 co-payment as well”.

dumb dumb dumb dumb

The Philippines is also an option.

Thailand is in a bit of political strife so avoid that.

South America is also on the cards...but well, the Cartels...

Precisely. It's far more honourable and justifiable to spend enough to ensure people who cant get the basics are able to get help and assume that maybe 10% of those eligible for it will be misusing those funds. The alternative is to fuck everyone over, which apparently is the direction Rothschild has advised.

Which ones? Newscorp or Rothschild?

And for those who are about to cry conspiracy...

It's not a conspiracy if it's on their official website.

I got a letter last week from the government telling me I had until the end of June to sign up for private health insurance to avoid the over 30 increase.

Now I really can't afford it even more but I'll have to get it regardless unless I want to die in an overcrowded public hospital waiting room full of tight bastards who have the sniffles or just want a chat.

What kind of investment you got to do to get 7% yields?

Index funds - http://www.multpl.com/s-p-500-earnings-growth

~14% actually but I'm accounting for sudden dips. Virtually all funds underperform the market but if you're looking to hedge for downside then sub 10%.

http://money.usnews.com/funds/mutua...stitutional-high-income-fund/lshix?int=af9256

If you go for US uni bonds which can't be forgiven due to most(US) bankruptcies then it's ~10% over the past decade. So pretty safe.

Charging people for research degrees will end well. It's not like Australian students bugger off to Europe to do them and never come back as it is... oh... wait...

$7 to see the doctor is nothing. Surely people can just forgo their weekly cigar!

That bogan dude on ABC brought up a good (obvious) point: See a doctor, there's $7 per person (if all three kids of yours are sick, there's $21). Need prescriptions to help cure them? There's another $5 per kid per script. Say each kid needs two rounds of prescriptions, that's $17 x 3 on top of what they'd have to pay already.

Fuck this government.

Now, I don't know a hell of a lot about how politics can work... can any of the things that were just announced not go through by way of them being blocked by the Greens/Labor?

Edit: Wow, this education union guy is PISSED. Looks like he's about to cry. That's anger and frustration right there.

What irks me is the rhetoric about the 'sharing of the load'.

What are the odds that everyone will share in the prosperity? Or will that just be for the big corps with active lobbyists as per fucking usual?

Also, the vindictive part of me hopes that some people who voted this lot in get hit hard. Especially if they work at newscorp.

We can share in the prosperity by driving on the roads that will be built with the money we're saving!

That's if you can afford the fuel, of course. And don't get in an accident, because if you need to see a doctor, that'll cost ya.

Good luck if you have a chronic disease like diabetes where you're at the doctors all the time as well. It's really going to hurt older people a lot too.

I would say that this is a poor attitude but then i think about how many people i know who voted liberal because of the juLIAR and boat people rhetoric.

I'm arcing up because I take medication for my ADHD at roughly 1 bottle a month. Add whatever else I might need a prescription for during a year, and there's a shitload of extra money that I might be able to afford now, but there'd be thousands of families and hell, maybe even myself in the future that might not.

Dr. Google is going to be getting a hell of a workout. But you'll have to wait for it... no NBN.

It is, but yes, I agree. Don't like to be spiteful, but fuck it, sometimes it feels good. Like now.

And make sure you save your pennies for the tolls because no new roads are built these days that aren't the great scam that is public-private partnerships.

So where do they see the country in 20 years? It's sure as hell not as a research hub because we won't have the infrastructure for it and the best and brightest will fuck off overseas even worse than they already do.

It's a great time to be poor, sick or old.

Young Liberals stating that the Budget is amazing on my Facebook feed, ewwww.

Not sure why they would be on your facebook feed. If i saw shit like that on my facebook i'd be deleting those people from my friends list (and it would definitely impact how i interact with them outside of that as well).

Despite the cataclysmic rhetoric, the Government will spend about what its spending now in services and collect about the same amount of revenue. None of these changes are all that dramatic. The new "Newstart" program looks like some weird equivalent of the Earned Income Tax Credit for students and young workers. The number of people on these programs has increased dramatically so it makes sense to try to trim them. Some unfortunate souls will probably get caught in the middle though.

Somewhat glad to be finished my degree by the end of 2015. Somewhat put off by the though of a masters degree then, and if it affects the price of that. Feel bad for the people coming into uni at the start of 2016.

Wait, we are actually going to have to pay interest on HECS-HELP debt?

No, they've 'just' lowered the income repayment threshold.

Though some is ceasing - HECS-HELP benefit for certain courses is gone

The Government will continue to make available Higher Education Loan Programme (HELP) loans so that eligible students do not have to pay their fees up‑front. However, the HECS‑HELP benefit, which was intended to provide an incentive for graduates of particular courses to take up related occupations or work in specified locations will end from 2015‑16. This follows a recommendation of the Review of the Demand Driven Funding System that the benefit be discontinued as there was little evidence that it had been effective in addressing skill shortages.

This measure will achieve savings of $87.1 million over three years.

The savings from this measure will be redirected by the Government to repair the Budget and fund policy priorities.

Indexation is also being adjusted

Nice.

Got to get into this sort of thing now that I've got an income.

To paraphrase a quote I heard on the ABC (Lyndal Curtis).
"Abbott set the bar very high for his government, and now they're trying to jump under it".

Perfect.
