I was watching a few minutes of a stream they had going on, and basically saw them diss the Funi DBZ Blu-Rays, lol.
Bluray looks like a crappy upscale. ._.

Looks pretty crispy to me. The Japanese DVDs must have had some weird filters added to them :|
ACTUALLY...

Here's a screenshot I took from the remastered R2 DVD version of ep 1:

My first instinct is that they actually took that screenshot from the awful SMC encode of the R2 DVDs which oversaturated all colors (seriously, is their encoder colorblind?):

But Viz's picture doesn't squash all detail in the background!

I thought the coloring looked familiar... maybe their encoder has a weirdly calibrated monitor >_>

I thought it didn't look very good either, but I'm hoping it's just a bad image.

What does a good HD master of early to mid 90s anime look like? D:

Will the new dub still call them Sailor Scouts? Or will they now be Sailor Soldiers?

Well since it's a redub, might as well go with the proper translation. It sounds harder, and we all know how gritty Sailor Moon is! (I'm not even joking. I remember watching the show at like 6am before walking to school, and that episode where
they all die
had me stressin like Drake)

That kind of thing was just unheard of in American Cartoons. The only anime I had seen before Sailor Moon and the original Dragon Ball run was Vampire Hunter D, and I almost thought that was some lucid dream that didn't exist in our reality.

According the Viz twitter account, part of the reason why they can't stream it in Canada yet is due to YTV. >_<

They didn't say that. Viz wants the channel to air the show on TV, but good luck doing that with a US dub on modern YTV.

The reason they can't stream the show in Canada is because their entire streaming strategy consists of Hulu embeds. That service blocks all non-US IP by default. Viz said they were working on a Canadian alternative after Neon Alley's linear feed died, but that was months ago, and VizAnime.com never was open to Canadians either.

YTV? Really? Do they still have the broadcast rights or something?

No, it's because Viz is going to be streaming on Hulu, and Hulu doesn't do Canada. Someone once said that Hulu could do Canada on a case-by-case basis, but then Canadians would get used to going to Hulu, and then they'd get mad at Hulu when the rights don't work, and that's too much trouble, so screw Canada.

The tweet from Viz says "we're actually hoping that our sempai @ytv might give us a call about broadcast"

That doesn't mean "YTV is blocking us and we're hoping that they call us up for no reason to say we're unblocked", it means "We have Sailor Moon, but we aren't in Canada. We know that YTV loves/loved Sailor Moon, and we're hoping/expecting that they're going to barge in the door any minute now and say 'Shut up and take my money.'"

Thanks to you both! That makes sense.

Oh yeah, a major technical problem with offering the old dub isn't just missing episodes or script rewriting, but missing scenes and reordered scenes. You couldn't offer it as an audio track. You'd have to package it as a separate product entirely.

But why would you? Let it die on the scrap heap of history.

ALL OVER MY FACE!

TAKE ALL MY MONEY!

YUS! <3

So excited, hope I have a job soon so I can save up and buy the whole collection :)

Despite the shitty upscale, there is absolutely no chance I won't buy this.

I get where Viz is coming from with this upscale business... It's just terrible timing, because I can see Toei doing their own Blu-ray remaster once Crystal starts pulling in money.

It's just like the manga, where the NA release had only just begun when the perfect editions got announced.

Any news on the new artbook that got delayed?

Why are strippers at the U.N. bad when they're great at strip clubs???
Ooooo Ooooo!

Gimme!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Blu-Ray boxset day one! Have they announced a release date yet?

Also isn't there a new Sailor Moon anime coming soon, have we had a trailer for that?

Sadly no word on the art book :( They said if sales went well that they might do a Sailor V/Short Stories boxset, but haven't heard any news on that either (and I'm sure they sold well enough).

The cover of the perfect editions are gorgeous though!

First set will be in the fall, and the first batch of subbed streams start this upcoming Monday.

No trailer for Crystal yet. July 5th is the premiere date.

Just art, but it's airing in July IIRC. So we'll get one at one point or another

While teenaged me who was obsessed with all things Sailor Moon is jumping for joy inside, the rest of me feel kinda bummed out at the news of all new English dub. I glad the censorship is gone, but I’m going miss the dubbed names and the music. I like Serena vs. Usagi, Darien to Mamoru. I prefer The Power of Love over Moon Revenge, Carry On over. … whatever they played in the Beryl fight at the end of the first season in the original Japanese.

In that perfect world that only exists in my head, we’d be getting an enhanced version of the original English dub minus the censorship with all the names and music and songs included, plus the original, unedited Japanese dub for the purists.

I understand why that’s a pipe dream that would never happen in million years but...

But…

who will fight evil by moonlight and win love by daylight for me now…?

Who, GAF? Who?

I'm in the same boat. I'm intrigued to see the whole series uncut with a new dub, but I'm so nostalgic for the original dub, I fear I just won't enjoy it as much as I should. It's the same deal with DBZ. I'll wait to hear how it sounds and maybe I'll give it a go.

Edit: While I'm at it: Mars > Venus > Jupiter > Pluto > Mercury > Moon

Never got much of a chance to see the later episodes that introduced Neptune, Saturn, and Uranus but I remember being so confused and bewildered by the new voices.

I have the dubbed ADV DVDs of seasons 1&2, and the dual audio Pioneer DVDs of seasons 3&4 and the movies. They're complete. The audio is fine. No crimes have been committed against the DiC dub, aside from high prices on the resale market (although considering that all the companies involved are dead, that's what all the obvious, rampant piracy is for).

The Japanese version sounded like it was being broadcast out of a metal trash can, it lost one episode from season 2, the entirety of season 5, as well as all of the specials. All crimes which are being gloriously fixed by Viz! And it's getting something Sailor Moon never had, a good dub.

I love the bad dub as much as the next guy who proudly has Terri Hawkes' autograph, but this isn't the time to try and slap more bandaids onto that dub. Yes, the bad dub was also missing entire seasons and episodes, but those were a fundamental part of the bad dub.

Viz seems to be showering high praise on their new dub cast, and I'm hopeful that one or more of the bad dub's cast managed to make the cut, and got promoted from the bad dub to the new dub.

Yeah, I saw their later tweets. (The first one was misleading.)

Why do they care about getting it on YTV? Shouldn't they get their own streaming service running first? I hate all these empty promises.

Two things:

The two uncut box sets released by ADV were sub only.

The audio on the ADV sets are from an old master, and unfortunately consistent with another Toei show from just before SM's time, Goldfish Warning. This is NOT the audio on the more recent Japanese DVD sets.

Thanks to everyone who answered :)

Happy for Toei Animation and Viz Media. I gotta say though, that announcement trailer got me pumped, dat music.

It's kind of interesting that making online streams accessible to Canada is an issue seeing how the original distribution agreements to air the show on YTV pre-date digital streaming so it would not have been included.
Will Canadians be blocked from a legit means of watching Crystal in July? Granted, the usual non-legit avenues will be available but that's hardly an ideal.
