Germany actually tried that, during the Doom Tree arc Natsumi referred to her as Usagi, Bunny was treated as a nickname for a few episodes to set up Chibiusa. Of course then Chibiusa showed up and declared her name is Bunny, at the end of the episode there was a line like "Poor little Bunny ... Chibiusa", it really didn't make much sense.
Hm, well, major props for trying att least. :)
Ours went something along the lines of "Her name is Annie, she's tiny like Thumbelina, let's call her Chibusa!" *dead*
Usagi literally calling her a bitch in the tub after she was introduced makes up for it though lol

I was watching a few minutes of a stream they had going on, and basically saw them diss the Funi DBZ Blu-Rays, lol.

can't say I'm a fan of those soft edges and DNR

For our members & fans in Canada:

We will soon have an announcement as to
how you too will be able to access all of the
great Neon Alley content
for free!

I haven't accessed this site in a while, so I'm not sure how recent this announcement is. Could they be working on something? Here's hoping...

That message has been up since they shifted Neon Alley to Hulu embeds in April. Viz has promised that Canadians would have news "soon" since February.

Can't you just use Hulu? I'm in europe and it works fine with unblock-us, it's not expensive and I'm sure if you don't want to pay you'll find free alternatives.
The thing is, Canadian and US media is so intertwined, there is no reason a comparable Canadian alternative to Hulu shouldn't already be available.

We get all these empty promises from these companies about being available in Canada "soon". They must have a very loose definition of the word.

And Fighting Evil By Moonlight is better than the original japanese song.

It's technically the same song that's tweeked and with different lyrics. Sailor Stars' opening is pretty awesome and I still wonder why they changed it after all those seasons.

Until someone disbands the CRTC and gets rid of all our ridiculous and archaic protectionist rules, we won't be able to get alot of the great digital and streaming content the US does, despite our close proximity and cultural entwinement.

Eh, the main melody is similar but it's a fairly different song overall.

Ok, when discussing music for the old anime, keep in mind that all of it was written by one person: Takanori Arisawa. He wrote the background music for all five seasons, all three movies, and even the various videogames based on the anime including the beatem up games, the fighting games, and Another Story RPG! It wasn't until the live action show did another person, Michiru Oshima, come into the picture.

Given this musical continuity, each season provided its own key themes but also built upon the library of music used in general. In other words, themes written for S1 continued to be used for the entire run. For example, this piece from S1 is later used for this amazing sequence in Sailor Moon S. As such, because the dub version of S and Supers did not replace the music, dub fans are already familiar with some tunes from S1 and R. Of course, there's a gradual shift in emphasis and style as the show goes on, and this was deliberate, as Arisawa noted that he wanted to shift from a more jass/pop feel to something more classical to reflect the maturity of the characters. Arisawa has also mentioned that the show and movie directors played a large role in helping him shape the final product, and this is reflected in the transitions from Junichi Satou(1-59) to Kunihiko Ikuhara(60-166, R movie) to Takuya Igarashi(167-200) as the show goes on.

Another transition to note is that of the transformation and attack music. The music used in s1 certainly has its own thing going, but the show changes direction somewhat in R using this music which then develops into the
S transform sequence as well as individualized sequences for all the Inners.

So anyway, some other S1/R highlights:
One of the many brassy tunes
Upbeat and hectic tune
Trademark mood setting tune
Tuxedo Mask's theme
Moody woodwind solo
Action tune
Another brassy tune
Jadeite's theme
Pinchi soshite Ketsui, which plays during a climactic scene in the tail end of the first season.
This version of the first ED, also used in pivotal scene.
Black Moon theme
Even moodier. Almost like a Super Metroid track.
This tense but jazzy piece was also found in the last episode of Supers.

Despite watching the show back in the day, I honestly really liked the music from the original anime over the DiC stuff. I remember when Sailor Moon S came out on Toonami with the new music and stuff when I was in elementary school and thinking that they really outdid themselves. I'd probably say that the music change (or reverting, I suppose), new Senshi (especially Hotaru/Saturn), and the Super upgrade for Sailor Moon is what made it my favorite season of the show back in the day.

Also, thanks for reminding me that I've yet to really get far in the Sailor Moon RPG. It was...eh honestly, but the Sailor Moon side was pretty cool. It was interesting that they made Sailor Moon the main healer of the group, though it makes sense since about half of her moves are purifying attacks instead of killing attacks.

Oh, Another Story is totally broken because, among other things, you can dual-tech while only using one of the characters turns. It's also utterly linear.

The magic system refilled your MP between fights, so there was no problem using your best AoE attacks on scrubs. And I never even really utilized the Super Sailor Moon/Chibi Moon transformations.

One cool thing was that it used voice clips of the senshi for most of their attacks, and I feel like it wasn't just show clips, but recorded stuff specifically for the game.

The arcade version of the beat-em-up had special attack mini-stock footage with recorded voices, even for some attacks not seen in the anime.

Just watched the first episode on Hulu. Watching it on my phone, I had no real problem with the video quality, outside the fact that it's not full screen/whatever aspect ratio will actual fit my screen. I need to remember to fix my subtitle options, though.

Other than that, it was a really fun watch. Usagi is likeable despite her constant whining (mainly due to the comeuppance she gets from said whining), the animation is great and the vice acting and music is pretty good, too. I'm definitely hooked.

I noticed something weird, on the DVDs the episode preview comes first, then the intro. The episodes on hulu switched that around, the episodes start with the intro and then the episode preview is shown.

You're right. It should be Ep preview -> OP -> Show recap -> Episode title.

Welcome to the (Pretty) Club.

I don't think the Hulu copy has a good bit-rate since there is macro-blocking all over the transformation sequence.
Hulu's HD (typically) maxes out at 720p and has a lower bitrate than Netflix at 720p, I believe. Hulu recommends at least 3 mbps for HD. Netflix recommends that for SD.

Watched the first episode. The nostalgia! I always thought Morga was a pretty scary first villain. It's also interesting to note the huge differences between the first episode in JP and the English dub. For example, in the English dub Serena said if her mom found out about her exam, she couldn't play the new Sailor V game, while Usagi didn't know who Sailor V was.

So is Sailor Moon actually worth watching in it's entirety?

I amused the notion of going through the series in full one time until I released that they made a billion episodes of it.

The part with Shingo kicking Usagi as she begged to be let back inside was cut out entirely.

200 in the TV series, and yes, it's worth it. However, the main engine of the show is character interaction, and that doesn't really get going until both Ami and Rei show up.

That depends, if you expect a serialized plot heavy series it's probably not for you. Sailor Moon has tons of monster of the week episodes, what makes it awesome is the character interaction. In many episodes I enjoyed the civilian scenes more than the actual fight against the monster.

Personally I think it's worth it, the characters are extremely likable (for the most part, there's a certain someone I despise), the villains are memorable and the series is simply fun to watch, it has a great visual style and lots of humor.

I started watching earlier this year with a friend. We're only 40-something episodes in, but it's a fun show. It's a little formulaic, but the characters are fun and its themes and subjects are something I simply haven't seen a lot of in other shows. Unless the quality suffers a bit in the later seasons, I think it's worth dipping into.

Watching episode 2, I forgot that Usagi is a Cancer like me! Except our birthstone is Ruby, she says her's is Pearl. Maybe I'm missing something (different in Japan?).

Which is like episodes 6 and 9 or something, respectively.

Also +1 for the NA music (SHE'S GOT THE POWER) and DiC voice cast but of course that's pure nostalgia talking. I can see why they wouldn't include the original dubs, too much stuff cut out an it'd be odd having missing lines spliced back in with different voices.

Just watched the first two episodes on Hulu Plus, the IQ is fine, looks to be about on par with the Japanese Aniversary dvd's in quality. The sound quality seems improved though, the first season has always suffered from bad sound quality so I was pleased that it seems to have improved.

Man oh man I'm in love all over again. Watched the first 2 episodes on my PS3. I can't wait until they get to the "Otome no Policy", and "Tuxedo Mirage" end songs.

A thing that bothered me while watching it on my PS3 is that for the subtitles, the words has a black bar behind them, and it's a bit delayed. For the most part I'm excited to see more, and will watch the next 2 episodes later on today.

Sailor Moon was animated in a 4:3 aspect ratio. Most modern displays are some variation of 16:9 (widescreen), so you're going to see the pillarboxes on the side for older content.

Yeah, that was the same problem I was experiencing on the Fire TV. Then I watched it on a Roku and the subtitles were perfectly fine.

STOP SHITTING ON MY MOTHER'S HEADSTONE
aren't Viz the ones who did the Bleach dub?

I only watched a few episodes, but I was immediately annoyed by the fact that they just left all the special attack names in Japanese. And there were like a hundred of them.

I'm just happy that everyone has a chance now to watch all the show uncut :) The vampire ep that was cut wasn't too special, but I remember how awesome it was with the ADV set to watch it for the first time :)

But... from what I remember even in Japanese dub those special attacks were in English: "Moon tiara attack", "Moon Healing Escalation", "Supreme Thunder", "Crescent Beam", "Fire Soul" etc. Or were they renamed in previous English dub?

Birthstones are by month, not by zodiac. So, June is pearl (or apparently moonstone which they oddly didn't go with) and July is ruby.
