Xbox One gets external storage, real name support, auto-sign in w/June system update

That HD looks like it might have an external power source (not powered over USB), does anyone know if the XB1 USB ports give out enough juice to power an external HD without an external power adaptor?

Someone asked that on twitter and Major Nelson replied that he has been using a bus powered drive, and it's been working great.

I'm pretty sure this problem is built right into the SDK. It's present in all XB1 games, but some developers adjust for it better than others. Check out the Digital Foundry face-off for Rayman Legends. It's 1080p and it's black level is darker than the PS4 version.

Yeah, but Ryse and EA's Frostbyte games don't have the same issue. Maybe it has to do with games that display the rendered images on one display plane and the UI on another plane?

EDIT: Also, I don't trust Digital Foundry. Xbox One doesn't send a signal to HDTVs to account for switching from Limited to Full Range like PS3 and PS4. You have to manually change the setting on your TV which is find for my old Samsung, but some TVs don't allow for the manual change, like my new Bravia, so I can't even play in Full Range. I don't understand why the gamma issues can't be fixed. It should be easy.

Gotta say MS are coming out with updates thick and fast, although some should have been at launch but at least they're updating and listening.

The external add on is very nice, my HDD isnt that full yet though, how many games do you guys have installed on your xbox one?
Looking at Smartglass it says 14, it would be 15 but I didn't have enough space to install Wolfenstein so Tomb Raider had to go (sorry Lara).

Thanks!

What about managing add ons for games not installed? Right now if you download DLC and don't have the game on your hdd you can't see it.

Don't make that a hardware thing, put a notification on the screen instead. I'm not looking down that often.

I would take any kind of indication of a low battery. Not sure how this hasn't become a bigger issue. I've tried searching for it and people just say "you should charge after playing anyway". That's just an incredibly backwards attitude.

Can't wait for external storage to be available. Now to get a nice external drive to keep me covered. I saw that Major Nelson suggested, does GAF has any suggestions for drives?

I'm thinking of buying a drive but I wonder if a USB powered one would be ok. Or should I get one with it's own power supply?

Either one of those. Of course you can also pick the same drive but smaller if you feel you don't need 4TB.

But don't pick up 3TB. They are terribly priced compared to 2TB or 4TB.

Get one with a power supply. The USB powered one will be a 2,5" 5200 rpm drive which won't be faster than the internal one unless you don't care about that.

The thing is it's not something they think needs to be fixed. There were actually quotes from Microsoft about this regarding the 360, as it had the same black crush. They said they do it because most people TVs out of the box benefit from this tweak. So in their minds it's a reaction to match most consumer TVs being a bit off themselves.

Three features coming in June I've really wanted:
- External storage (have a 4 TB drive ready to drop on)
- Real name (something I've wanted for about 8 years on XBL)
- Auto Sign-In (Something I wanted from the moment I got the XboxOne... I'm basically the only one who uses it in the house and my GF would rather just login with my name than with her own)

That's what bothers me most, and I wish we could get Phil Spencer to recognize that it's a serious issue for people who are serious about image quality. That mentality is 360-MS and not the more recent image we're getting with XB1.

Hold on now before they fix teh gamma output let them fix the Full RGB output first. This fucking box shows nothing between 0-15. Just crushes all dem blacks.

I've been on Xbox Live since day one and I've still never seen the need for the "real name" thing. I've got tons of close and "real life" friends on Xbox Live and I've never had problems forgetting who they are based on their gamer tag.

I've got a friend from college, and I play with him and 3-4 other guys he knows in person. I constantly confuse which real name goes with which gamertag, and since they all know eachother they just use real names.

Of course, the real name needs to show up in games too or I'll still confuse them.

Yeah, I mentioned that earlier too. There are some really annoying gamma issues with the console and it's infuriating that MS won't even bother to recognize it.

I like how they let you take your external drive to a friends house, that makes it very handy without having to install stuff again. I'd have expected them to have encrypted the HDD to your personal Xbox one.

Real names I'm mixed on. I like the idea, but tbh I'd prefer to be able to add my own metadata to friends. Eg if you're 'bob' on gaf, but your xbox one gamertag is 'randomgamer11!1' then I'd like to be able to call you bob. I don't know your real name and that won't help me know who you are.

Rearranging your pins is about time. You can kind of do it 'tower of hanoi' style on the current software, but moving them around using smartglass will be a lot more convenient

TV stuff is ok but a bit disappointing for me in the preview. Hopefully they let me pause my tivo in the update - the preview didn't let me do that. How will they let you set recordings etc? Have they added LAN control for some DVRs?

tbh my tivo app on my ipad is already convenient for that so I probably wouldn't use that.

Huh? My TiVo has worked from day one. Pause, play, red, ffwd...

seriously?!?!

getting interested in getting a xb1 again

fake edit: lol says it right in the OP, not sure how my eyes skipped it

The one guide for Canada may still be in beta for people in the preview program. I don't think it's gone public yet.

One day..

That same day we might get Viva Pinata 3 :(

So E3? Because that's when RARE will announce the triumphant return of Viva Pinata.

It seems like such an easy and obvious thing to add if they could, it makes me wonder if perhaps something about the Xbone's render pipeline/RAM setup makes it impossible or very difficult for them.

Would be somewhat embarrassing if that was the case. It surely can't be that much harder to implement than Xbox, Record That?

Having it as a voice command really wouldn't work, considering the time it'd take to quickly say it and have the console recognise and process what you've said (especially since it waits a second or two to see if you say anything else), you'd miss the screenshot opportunity. I think double-tapping the home button without an app snapped would be the best way.

I think both would be preferably. Xbox, Record That has worked flawlessly for me so far. Admittedly, I've only used it a handful of times, but it's worked like a charm each time.

Yeah, that would be nice. I hope they add it before Sunset Overdrive comes out.

Absolutely, Sunset looks to be a game where you'll wanting to capture lots of footages, screens.

I believe they already have a screenshot tool they give out to certain testers (but it only sends a SS to MS) when they're investigating bug reports.

Just wondering, is USB 3.0 fast enough for this? Like, would you notice a performance difference in a game installed to the external hard drive as opposed to the internal one? I guess this would depend on the game (maybe affecting something like Watch Dogs more than something like Killer Instinct)?

Both the PS4 and XB1 use SATAII, which USB3 is faster than. You're fine.

(Why they used SATAII rather than SATAIII is another question, but luckily for our purposes SATA devices are backwards compatible.)

EDIT: Beaten by turtles. I forget that you don't skip to the last pages with non-subs sometimes.

Surprised noone is complaining about the lack of Xbox.com integration for XB1, they've really fallen down on that one.

This is really weird. Knowing Microsoft they are holding off on it for some reason...but i can't figure out what it is...hopefully it is soon

That's exactly what I was talking about. Now I'm confused.

There are two issues. Full Range setting is messed up, AND blacks are crushed in games that use the hardware scaler.

EDIT: So playing Dead Rising 3 with the XB1 set to Full Range on an HDTV without a manual Full Range setting option is pretty much complete darkness. LOL

Isn't the only USB 3.0 port on the side? That's definitely going to ruin the appearance of my set up.

EDIT: A quick Google search proves me wrong. Awesome, can't wait to pick up a 2tb hard drive.

Show me the thread where people are deciding to buy Xbox One because you can plug in an external hard drive and take your games to another Xbox One. Its a feature that WiiU has and in both cases it is out of necessity. You cannot change the small internal drive so the alternative is giving you the ability to expand via external drive. An advantage it is not.

You're trying too hard. You can't deny the advantage in ADDING HDD space on TOP of what you already have. Swapping your HDD to a bigger one on the PS4 is great but you are effectively losing the original 500GB. And having it portable is great because tellin your friend to download a game in advance is not a real solution at all, not with the size of games these days.
