Xbox One gets external storage, real name support, auto-sign in w/June system update

The way it was handled on 360 I considered a scam, hence why this is a welcome change.
Or did they actually patch in external support for the 360 too and I missed it? I haven't used mine since 2011 or so.

Maybe I should edit my post because I do see how it's easily misinterpreted.

Got you... Well they fixed it for Xbox one at least. :)

Now please give me HDMI-CEC. My Smart TV doesn't like IR blasting, and won't switch inputs automatically without it. PS4 does it amazingly, pressing the PS button quickly brings me back to the game. It's legitimately faster to have a cable box / antenna plugged directly into my TV or receiver and tapping the PS button to return to the game input than it is to say "Xbox Watch TV".

I did not know that you could switch TV and games with the PS4, really? is this possible?

The external hdd support sounds good. Less likely to need to wait for a 1TB version. Looking like I'll be getting myself an Xbox one after E3(depending on what's announced)

Say what now?

Scenario 1: Replaceable hard drive.
- Console comes with 500 Gb hard drive
- Buy a 1Tb drive and swap it out
- Total drive space available 1Tb

Scenario 2: External hard drive supported
- Console comes with 500 Gb hard drive
- Buy a 1Tb drive and plug it in
- Total drive space available 1.5Tb

Scam me more, Microsoft!

edit:

Did you realise you can buy any off-the-shelf USB3 drive to use (>256Gb)? It's not a Microsoft-branded one only.

100 percent this...100 dollars can buy you 3 tb...and you can add two...how much better can it get (answer...it can't)

They did. Only 32GB max limit and two devices so only up to 64GB storage increase.

Great news.

MS has been stepping up its game in the last few weeks. Hope they have an equally strong E3 and aren't blowing all of their load preemptively.

So I could have my entire x1 library on a single drive and be able to play all of them at my friends house? Jesus that's badass.

If they're digital downloads you'll need to be signed in.
If they're disk-installs you'll need to take the disk

The hard drive isn't locked to a console, so they can't prove you own the game without one of those two. (Oh to have had the original DRM plan ;-))

Didn't know that.

They allowed USB stick support on 360, not external hdd.

So the external HDD becomes the default, and if filled it spills over to the internal one? Wouldn't the opposite be the better choice?

From what I understand the hdd will already have your profile on it.

Good stuff. Having the HDD non-replaceable is nothing but a scam this day and age.

Well, it's not like the PS4 has ever been stuck with a default HDD though. It was user-replaceable since launch last I recall.

Externals are a lot cheaper though, so it's by far a better solution.
A competitive edge though? What does that even mean?

I bet he's putting in some crazy hours, what with designing and writing every word of code himself.

Also, do you realize that adding MORE external storage is a simple easy prospect... installing a new drive in your PS3/PS4.. especially if you have data is much more of a time consuming process.

Give MS props for doing something good.. anyone painting this is anything but good has some kind of agenda.

Paid multiplayer... 360 is Sony's role model too ;-(
Doesnt even start there. We could go all the way back to trophies lol.

Regardless its a good thing that we have both. Well, at least some of us do :p.
The updates on both ends have been great and will only get better as they check each others bullet points.

External HD support is great, I’ve already run out and will be going out to buy a new external HD within the next month or so. The whole bringing the HD to a friends house only really is a bonus for digital buyers though, right? I mean I assume you’ll still need the physical disk in the console and the HD it’s install on attached in order to play the game. Otherwise what’s stopping me buying a game, installing it on one external HD (giving that to a friend) then installing it on my HD? I know before the whole #NoDRM debacle MS said something about family sharing games (something I was really looking forward too), I wonder if we will see this eventually come about again?

EDIT:NVM already answered
Xbox 2 would be out before you fill that up lol.
Challange accepted! :D
That HD looks like it might have an external power source (not powered over USB), does anyone know if the XB1 USB ports give out enough juice to power an external HD without an external power adaptor?

Nope they allowed external storage. You could also connect a USB 2.0 HDD. Of course the same 32GB limit applied so only 32GB of that HDD's storage were formatted to be used by the console.

Do you even read what you're quoting? Come on, son.

Not once have I said this isn't a good move.

Games with Gold
Paid apps are now free
Blu ray

The list goes on.

Come on man, let's not do this in this thread.

Two of your examples are XBL vs PSN features, and not X1 vs PS4 features.

And the third one... BluRay? Seriously?... What do you expect them to do, ship it with a DVD drive in 2014?

The most requested features for Xbox One users are generally to do with customisation (Xbox 360), background audio and media playback (Xbox 360), guide button functionality (Xbox 360) and quick achievements access (Xbox 360). Ones that have already made it across were improved party chat (Xbox 360) and friend notifications (Xbox 360).

The PS4 has very little bearing on what most Xbox owners want from their Xbox One. There is the screenshots, and prior to that there was Twitch streaming.. but Twitch was already happening anyway and simply wasn't ready for launch.

People just had to shit up the thread. Thank you for the entertainment.

You are sipping some bitter, bitter kool aid if you don't think external HDD support is neat. Hope we get it on PS4.
