Seven Dead, Several Hospitalized in Isla Vista Mass Shooting

This will probably start a debate much like the discussion over the Gabrielle Giffords shooter. Both instances involved young conservatives, both probably with an diagnosed mental illness, murdering strangers. Both this kid and Jared Laughtner had their own YouTube channels.

We can't know if either killer would have committed this violence had they not been exposed to this right-wing rhetoric, but both young men seemed to be inspired by particular conservative movements.

They can make a case that he was being bullied there and it's possible some people there egged him on.

I don't think you'd be able to make that stick. It doesn't look like he posted there THAT much, and what he did post demonstrated he was already of the frame of mind/view of the world that spurred these terrible actions.

This is blowing up on Tumblr. I'm not sure if this is true, but apparently he was influenced by MRA rhetoric, and all his victims were female? I can't find any information about the gender of the people killed.

Is there evidence to support this claim?

Where has he displayed conservative sympathies? Or are you just referring to his gender politics?

Not calling you out, just curious if I missed anything.

I probably would have been lolling when watching that video if I didn't know what he was allegedly going to do after. I mean "supreme gentleman"? No way I would have thought he was being serious.

sad to see someone get so crippled by minor things like being a virgin or feeling unattractive to girls. i think he definitely fits all the criteria for a psychopath; but i'm betting this personality and behavior shift has been something of slow burn over the years with his social and home life dynamic causing him to feel isolated. he's also at the emerging adulthood age where depression and loneliness start to peak, and he expects a lot more from relationships he has with others. obviously not dismissing that he committed some atrocities in the last few hours. sad to see stuff like this happen.

I'm so tired of these fucking misogynistic assholes. Here's a hint, if no women like you maybe you should think about what the common denominator is.

He was apparently active in MRA communities and seemed misogynistic in his video, although I doubt anybody in that movement influenced his decision to kill.

No idea, but I can see how he could have been influenced by sites like returnofkings, with their checklists of what makes you a "real man" and what should logically fall in your lap if you follow that advice to the letter. Don't see how you'd be able to definitely state his political orientation from what little we've seen either however.

Well, a already silly movement might look even worse.

Men deal with a lot of stuff. Having people to talk about it and find solutions with is a good thing. They helped me. MRAs are not looking to kill people. Extremist assholes do. This piece of shit was off his rocker. Quit the crap.

Uh, what? He murdered six people to "get back at the world." How can he not be considered insane?

I do not know. I don't consider myself an expert. Does a person killing 6 people get automatically branded as mental?

That's not what I'm focusing on though.

He may have gone on a killing spree regardless, who knows? The fact is, he went and murdered 6 women. He states in his video why he was going to do this, and it's down to his entitlement.

The MRA rhetoric may not have influenced his decision to start killing women, but his attitudes towards women probably was.

There are a lot of mass murderers that were leftwing nutjobs. I don't think politics have anything to do with this crime.

MRA communities foster some of the most virulent misogyny on the internet and it absolutely influences assholes like this shooter. I won't cut their toxic movement any slack at all.

MRA's are just another hate group as far as I'm concerned.

Well maybe you shouldn't be focusing on extremists. There are plenty of female extremist groups as well. The natural tendency for any sane person is to not even get involved with extremists.

Every subject on the planet can be moderate neutral or extreme.

No, just coincidence. Guy was basically a real life Patrick Bateman, he was his own source.

I had no idea people actually laughed like super villains in real life... > ->

Creepy. Glad he's gone and won't harm anyone else.

...And now I'm wondering how soon until we see the comments from teenage girls indicating that they hold the same beliefs as you (as is wont to happen for most mass murderers).

At any rate, poor women. I feel sorry for them on many levels. They were killed as representative of other women that wouldn't date the guy, for one thing. It's gotta suck, not even dying representative of yourself.

To try and turn this strange post into constructive conversation: The thing is his negativity warped and skewed his perspective so much that he may really thought he was physically unattractive rather than lacking the social skills to connect to the opposite sex.

I'm not sure that's the case. It appears that he really did think that he was the shit. From his car to who he was, he believed that he had everything it took to attract a woman.

It's amazing how quickly some people made this about themselves and their interests instead of about a mentally disturbed a-hole with easy access to guns.

Not really talking about GAF here- had a bunch of social media stuff popped up that I found really disturbing.

From his video "Why do girls hate me so much?":

"I don’t know why you girls are repulsed by me. It doesn’t make sense. I do everything I can to appear attractive to you. I dress nice, I am sophisticated, I am magnificent, I have a nice car—A BMW. Well, nicer than 90% of the people in my college. Well you know, I’m polite, I am the ultimate gentlemen and yet you girls never give me chance. I don’t know why. I put a lot of effort into dressing nice. These sunglasses here are worth 300 dollars, Giorgio Armani. See how fabulous I look."

[Video goes on about him describing the girls that go to his college, really super creepy]

Yeah, well no one has to live in fear of being massacred by so-called "female extremists" or straw feminists so the two groups hardly seem comparable to one another.

Perhaps. I heard him describe himself as gorgeous in one of his videos, but that doesn't necessarily reflect his state of mind at the time of the shooting.

Another interesting thing is, if it was just sex and a pretty woman on his arm he could have found someone. He was handsome and rich. Even if he couldn't find a woman to love him he could have found a woman to pretend to love him. He must have been extremely shy, because a decent portion of the population has no qualms with dating a psycho if there's money involved.

So, has it been confirmed it's the guy in the video? I tried looking up some articles and there doesn't seem to be a legit answer other than it's related.

I mean, of course most likely it is but I just wonder if it's been confirmed?

It's been confirmed online due to the license make and model of his car matching the car (a picture of him posing with the car showed the plate) in crime scene photos. News agencies can't confirm it until the police make a statement.

Elliot Rodger sounds like he's never worked a single day in his life and possibly was grossly spoiled beyond belief during his early youth. It makes me wonder what lead to this supposed feeling of grandiosity.

This YouTube comment is just amazing

Prime example of opportunism. And apathy to boot.

The family of a gunman who killed six people in California say he was receiving psychiatric treatment and confirm his name as Elliot Rodger.

Of course this will -only- be about the mental health issues, and not the attitudes that would have attributed to these killings.

There were plenty of people who lumped all Muslims into radical hate groups less than ten years ago due to 9/11. Glad to see men aren't allowed to have problems and that this type of sentiment is alive and well. Here's a thought: you can have issue with the way people treat you and you don't necessarily have to hate women to care about yourself and need a place to vent and whatnot. Pretty sick of YOU to think I might be somehow lumped into the same category as this kind of person. Or that this asshole is indicative of men's groups as a whole. Gross.

Must've been a family gun he stole or one he bought from a friend, or any method that would be off the record.

yea I agree, seems like everything was handed to him. He doesn't even talk about studying or going to the library. Its just his BMW and hot women....

this case is really similar to the 2009 LA Fitness shooting guy was a lonely single man. Went to gym and shot and killed 3 women

To be fair, the vast majority of people not talking about studying or going to the library, in their youtube videos don't do crazy shit like this.

Yeah, I could see the difficulty interacting with others part of Asperger's Syndrome attributing this the guy's world view. It seems to be the catalyst, where the world view was more of an outlet for the frustration from that. No psychologist, but it would make sense.

Men certainly do have issues that very much need to be addressed, but the majority of what you see coming out of MRA circles seems to be focused on blaming women for thier problems and trying to make women's problems insignificant. It's a very hateful movement in general.

Being angry and mysoginistic is not the way to affect social change.

true but there were posts in the thread link of people on BB forums making fun of his looks, weight, etc. which someone could spin as motivating his rampage
