Gamespot rumor: Big third-party Xbox One exclusive at E3

Games that are developed by third parties that become exclusive because a console manufacturer (usually Microsoft, as this is their MO) pays them to not release the game on any other platforms.

That does not quite fit what that guy said though:
Sony won't moneyhat a game unless they get to retain the IP, which is really kinda sucky if you're a third-party developer.

What do you think moneyhatted games are?

Publishing and Money-hatting are NOT the same thing.

Examples of recent money-hats, including "marketing partnerships": Watch Dogs/AC4 content on PS, PvZ on XB, Titanfall on XB, CoD/BF maps on XB, FIFA content on XB

Examples of first party published games from second parties: Dead Rising 3, The Order, Quantum Break

Sigh, MS has billions, doesn't mean they're gonna throw it away at meaningless deals to get some exclusive. MS was also supposed to undercut PS4 and take a huge loss on the Xbone at launch, because they have deep pockets.

I never said that it means they'll do it. I simply said that a game can ignore the PS4 as long as MS pays enough.

Jesus...
The Order gets delayed, people go on and on about MS exclusives.
MS has a big E3 exclusive, people go on and on about Sony exclusives.

Where's Ron Perlman when you need him?

with a longer term view, it might not make sense to restrict yourself to Xbox one. However, for smaller developers, it may make sense to allow MS to provide seed capital to help you finish your game, and also significant marketing backing to grow brand awareness, with the potential of broadening your release to multiplatform with future games.

Titanfall on XB

I could be wrong, but wasn't it revealed that Titanfall was not a money hat in the traditional sense? I thought it turned out it was much more like the DR3 or Bayonetta 2 situations, but with EA retaining the publishing rights.

Wasn't Titanfall in trouble if MS didn't step in? I'm pretty sure that was the case.

But what game? You think FIFA, GTA, Battlefield, COD, Fallout etc. caliber games can ignore market leader console's userbase just with Microsofts money?

It'd be absolutely hilarious if it was Shenmue 3 just to see how many people meltdown from it being an Xbone exclusive.

I don't know why that would be a surprise. I associate Shenmue with Sega first, and Microsoft second.

I played Shenmue 2 on the Xbox.

Whatever it is...I'm excited for E3 this year. Very excited!!

Should be amazing from the big 3.

You have to draw the line somewhere. I would say that if MS didn't publish it, it's a money-hat.

If it served their interest to paint Respawn as some kind of underdog studio (LOL) after the fact, that's good PR and is fine by me.

Reading that again, it's not a 3rd party exclusive game, it's just a 3rd party exclusive reveal...

nothing to see here, move along, move along...

But I thought the game was in trouble and was at risk of not being developed at all. Seems like a weird, arbitrary line.

I wish I could find the link on how surprised the devs were to find out EA sold exclusive rights to that game and the debate began on the details and how vince and co pretend to really know already but didnt. There were tweets about it and all how everone was in shock and awe. So if it was truly in trouble, then why would EA sell exclusive to MS instead of it being known from the get go?

Dunno where I read it but they had TF up and running on ps4 when that bit of news broke so, this TF shit is a clusterfuck of mind bending M night shit.

Oh well.

Yes and no. They funded the game's completion when it's was in trouble which got them a 13 month exclusive window and then they locked it down fully to MS platforms around E3. Also the fact it's not published by them makes it lead more close to money hatting.

Assets were leaked not too long ago. L4D1/2 were exclusive to xbox 360 in the console space, doesn't seem like it would be a big surprise.

If you knew Valve's stance on MS you'd know why this would never happen.

Gabe's stance on PS3 was that it was absolute garbage and they should trash it/start over. Then he released steam for ps3 (which wasn't really much). I don't think they're hardliners at all.

And Phil Spencer will get more love for going in his drawer and lazily writing a multi-million dollar check. The old MS playbook, if you can't beat 'em, outspend 'em.

How does this compare to all the third party exclusives Sony got in the PS1/PS2 era? I mean, sure Playstation was way ahead of the competition but there were still plenty of third party exclusives on the inferior hardware, and if those games had been available on Xbox in that generation (or available day one), it would have probably seen better sales of the consoles (not suggesting it would have been able to compete with PS2 because it wouldn't have, but if it had sold 27m instead of 25m units then thats still an improvement)

Were you upset that MGS4 and Haze didn't come out on 360?

If Xbox is known for "multi-million dollar checks" to third parties, they certainly didn't invent them

Yeah, the moneyhat talk, especially from frizby, is mostly erroneous and adding nothing to the conversation.

I gave cogent examples, from both Sony and MS, of first party published games and of moneyhats. If you're too thickheaded to figure out the difference for yourself...

The difference between the 360 and PS3 was there came a point where all MS became was a check writing and Halo factory. Paying for exclusive third-party titles and exclusive DLC became the norm. Sony chose to invest in new IP. When the smoke cleared Sony had a pretty good catalog of first party titles while MS was busy cranking out Halo/Forza/Fable sequels and writing checks. One strategy yielded The Last of Us, the other got us windowed DLC for Call of Duty.
