A Tale of 'Merica and Milk - I just walked out and abandoned a job interview. FML.

Because no one expects an adult to get up and walk out of a job interview because they have better places to be? She also didn't tell you to keep your clothes on, because she assumed as an adult you already knew that was a rule.

Ooooooooooh

I hope you guys all know that Thacker is a total quack. See the following thread where he posted on the diablo forums: http://us.battle.net/d3/en/forum/topic/12504871619?page=1

A little about me before I delve into the details. I am an IT networking administrator who also happened to play poker professionally online for 6 years and for 3 of those I also played live poker as part of my routine. During this time I accumulated over 8 million total hands of poker played all while maintaining a positive win rate.

He's also notorious for being extremely racist against peruvians in the dota thread.

At this point I don't even know if he's just a troll or a truly delusional person.

If he's a troll, he's maintaining it in real life as well or seeding the troll posts with truth.

Given what he's shared with GAF before, I think he's just taking his somewhat-justifiably-earned "everyone is out to get me" mentality too far. Pair that with a decent dose of misplaced pride and you have a pretty unfortunate combination.

First thing that comes to mind is beggars can't be choosers. Seriously, how can you be so picky if you are unemployed, needed a job, and basically had it waiting for you? Second thing that comes to mind is benefit of the doubt. You didn't give it to him. There could be several reasons he kept you waiting.

If you had just waited a bit longer, you could have that job instead of 1000+ posts telling you that you screwed up

Humility and Patience goes a long way.
You do not have dignity worthy of praise. You are vain and arrogant. Reflect on the good advice a lot of these gaffers has given you. But most likely your arrogance will have their advice fall on deaf ears. I have wasted enough time making this post.

A Janitor with no High School Diploma would be a better job candidate than you.

I just read the entire thread.

You made a mistake Thatcher. I would have sat there all day for the chance to make $70K+ in a year.

You say people shouldn't be disrespected like that and you're right, but the world is what it is and sometimes you've just got to sack up and eat shit.

That being said - I get extremely nervous at interviews and would not have appreciated a 40 minute wait, the interview process is stressful as hell for someone who is unemployed and in the unemployed mindset, so please lay off the OP.

Maybe he is self-important, and maybe he's having a really bad frickin year.

Two things:

1. "She stated that unfortunately they had two techs leave late the previous week unexpectedly and that he was looking to hire multiple people."

Multiple people don't leave a company unexpectedly. Something is fucked up big time there.

2. Both sides agreed on a interview at 3 p.m. and that's it. He should treat you with the same amount of respect as you do. Even if he has to reschedule the interview to 3:05 p.m., he should talk to you. It's on his/their part to let you know.

Honestly, you don't want to work there, even for short time while looking for another job. I did this many times before and I don't regret anything. If people don't respect you, fuck them. I don't care how busy there are and nobody should put up with shit like this. Stuff like this turns into so much stress and makes people sick to the bone which eventually can lead to cancer. Don't listen to the people to suck it up, because you shouldn't. There will a better job opportunity come along with people that actually respect you as a person and your time.

I work at a software company (and conduct interviews), and if someone came in and waited longer than 10 minutes without being addressed, no matter how busy we were, I'd be incredibly embarassed.

He came early and addressed by the receptionist, was given a test that had an expected time of completion, and then impatiently stormed out around half an hour after completing the test.

He waited 30 minutes in between being addressed by the receptionist and leaving... without inquiring further about his next step. Completely unprofessional and shows a serious lack of initiative and people skills.

But he was addressed. The receptionist was right there.

He could have, in fact, asked the receptionist if he needed to come back later. Or if he got the time wrong, or if this normally happens, of fucking ANYTHING pertaining to the job.

Instead he got pissed cause he wasn't the most important person in the world.

Given the OPs behavior and ensuing responses, as someone in a position to hire, I would never consider hiring someone like that. Some advice OP: If you TRULY want a job, learn to adapt. People hire on their terms, not yours.

Worrying doesn't cause cancer.

You have some serious issues, OP and I strongly encourage you to talk to someone who is qualified to help you through them.

I don't think he was expecting them to hire him after he walked out.

The next time you get an interview, make sure you tell the receptionist that if it doesn't not begin within 30 minutes of you sitting down, you'll walk out.

I don't think anyone's really refuting that the manager should have probably addressed him at some point. The manager was a bit rude but there could have been a good explanation.

I think it is because of the OP's sense of entitlement, that people are focusing more on that. At the very least the OP should have stayed and interviewed. If he got the job, he can still turn it down because of his pride, but what perplexes me and other people is why would you shoot yourself in the foot for what could have been a misunderstanding... especially when you are "desperate" for a job with debts piling up.

At some point, you need to put your pride aside and survive in this world.

It's a small business with 8-10 employees from OP's description. They just lost 2 competent workers. He showed up before his scheduled time, and completed his 30 min of allotted paperwork and didn't even ask what the next step was. Just "fuck this shit, I'm out" without a word. I usually expect to see my doctor when I show up on time, but real life doesn't work that way.

He created a scenario in his head where the employer was a predatory jerkoff looking to work him like a dog, ignore him like a cat, and exploit him for slave wages.

The kicker? The OP wasn't even busy. He didn't have another job to get back to. No pressing appointment. No big party or date. Not even a WoWv raid. Just GAF. He rushed home from a job interview to brag about how we he stuck it to the man. On the internet.

To make that promise in this economy is downright irresponsible.

Loooool

The employer did himself a favor. Self-entitled employees are always a pain when it comes to common practices such as being expected to work unpaid overtime, being on call, and having your plans for the day do an abrupt 180 because IT happens.

OP, you need to swallow your pride. I say this in a sincere manner.

Did you just honestly defend unpaid overtime, unpaid on call and not being compensated for unexpected business occurance?

Did you REALLY just defend that?

Somehow the most amazing part of this whole mess is that the interviewer asked if he was coming back. Like, he actually gave the OP an opportunity to come back from bailing on an interview. That's incredible.

Worrying doesn't cause cancer.
Stress does tho.

Sure, he could have said something to the receptionist before leaving. Something like: "We had an appointment for 3 p.m. and it's now 3:30 p.m.. If that's the amount of respect I can expect here as an employee, I do not wish to be contacted by your company anymore. Please let him know that, bye."

Um, no it doesn't.

Well the interview wasn't even late. He was still in the prescribed time to finish his paperwork.

Ah, here comes Creepy-GAF with the cyber stalking

BTW what is weird about playing poker?

Incredibly basic duties she failed to complete. He even specifically excused himself from asking her why he was waiting because she looked so busy.

Yet all of the ire is aimed at the boss who MUST have been pulling power plays..

Not all of it. He did complain she didn't bring him a beverage.

You mean... Salary?

Salary does not automatically disqualify you from overtime. Unless your position directly relates to making business critical decisions, provides you with hire and fire capability and has you oversee multiple employees you are still entitled to overtime even if you are salary.

Sadly, most all of the tech industry is unaware of such a thing. A technical person in a setting that handles administration and managing of a network despite being salary is usually cheated out of salary OT.

This is another case of people, especially in the IT field laying down and accepting things that are the norm... even if they are illegal in most cases.

So being late to an interview is unprofessional, but let me put it this way:

If you aren't desperate, by all means leave. You are probably wasting your time interviewing at a company that can't get it together.

If you are desperate, you wait patiently as long as it takes. A bad job is better than no job. Honestly. You can start looking for a better one right away, but be grateful to have something in the mean time.

This atran guy has a major hard on for me. Check his posts in that thread on Diablo 3 regarding me. Don't really know what his problem is, but as I told him before I'd be more than happy to discuss it over PM like an adult instead of making personal attacks consistently on NeoGaf.

If someone offers you salary, make it clear you won't work so much as a minute more than 40 hours a week without additional compensation.
