Destiny Alpha Gameplay Leaks [Update: Luke from Bungie comments, read post 1557]

I need context and gameplay from multiple players (inc. simultaneously).

There's too little to judge, and we are only understanding the gameplay from the perspective of one player.

I don't think the "hype" is over at all. And so what if it looks like Borderlands? Game quality often lies in the details, and we don't even understand the big ones yet.

it will take the beta to turn some people i think.

I just watched the footage - I still don't know. There's nothing I've seen of Destiny that really shows off the revolution Bungie's been talking about. It looks nearly identical to Borderlands but with a different tone and art style. The world looks gorgeous but it also appears empty and utterly lifeless. Honestly if this wasn't made by Bungie then I don't think I'd be interested.

The Borderlands argument is silly.

Borderlands is a highly successful concept that no one else has approached. It's in a genre of it's own, so why wouldn't anyone else make an attempt at creating something along the same lines? Also, from what we've seen, Destiny looks bigger, cleaner, sexier, and likely has better RPG mechanics than Borderlands ever had.

Borderlands works because of the humor and art style in addition to the mechanics. Without the humor/art, it wouldn't be special. Destiny looks like Borderlands with all the life completely sucked out of it. They haven't shown enough of the RPG mechanics in Destiny to make the comparison you made.

blands at least has some personality and humor to prop it up and a lot more interesting weapon mods (and only got attention for being the first fps version of diablo

I see that someone isn't familiar with Hellgate: London :p

Or did you erase it from your memory like I wish I could?!?

hope they include the option to remove health bars and damage ticks from the UI. i'm smart enough to know how much health and damage i'm doing when i shoot an enemy and he falls/explodes/stops moving. ;)

So far, it just looks like Boarderlands with Halo art style.

The open world looks just as barren, the encounters look just as mindless, and the RPG elements (aside from character customisation) look just as shallow.

However I have faith that the enemy encounters are going to be stellar. Bungie know how to do AI. All this low level stuff isn't going to be indicative of what this game is capable of if Budgie live up to their reputation.

But, from what we've seen, it doesn't really look any different to a slightly upgraded Boaderlands. And if that's all it turns out to be I know I'll be disappointed.

I suspect some really cool campaign gameplay footage will do the trick for a lot of people. A lot of the people who haven't read interviews from bungie people still have a very limited understanding of the kind of game Destiny is. I mean, there's a good portion of people that don't know that there will be more traditional multiplayer modes or even a story campaign.

Eh, humor and artstyle are what makes borderlands unique, they are not what makes the concept of an open world, lootbased shooter a good game. Or would you say that GTA5 is also Inferior to Saints 3&4 because it lacks the crazy humor and scenarios?

This seems like one of those games that is hard to judge from some gameplay. Everything seems solid but not exactly tons of fun, but i think in the context of the big world and structure if done right it could paint things in a different light.

this is the same shit that pervaded every cover shooter after gears.

"it looks like gears. oh it's gears. lol gears much? meh i've played gears before so why would i play this?"

So will there be an actual campaign? Or just borderlands/rage like quests?

I think the single worst thing Bungie did with previewing this game has been limiting the demos to Earth. I think that's the root of why people are calling this "uninspired". It's just a post-apocalyptic Earth environment. I'm hoping we get a glimpse of the other planets at E3.

So I've been thinking about the game and why it doesn't work in those videos. Well first off the Dinklage is phoning it in and also I think the sound editing is piss poor. Possibly with some work done in the sound direction and maybe putting some voice filters on, Dinklage won't sound so damn bored. He's almost a buzzkill at this point. Another thing is that he doesn't really talk much and so it just feels like random quotes instead of any sort of conversation. I mean the Chief at least responded to Cortana. The 2nd thing is the level design in that it feels very much like a MMO in that there is a ton of dead space where it just seems to be burning the player's time. I think Bungie's policy of '30 seconds of fun' isn't on display here. it feels large for the sake of being large. The fights take place on a 2D plane and the level designs don't do anything to spice the fighting up. The art style in Old Russia isn't blowing me away either.

On that note, The enemy AI wait for you to cross their aggro threshold and then attack you in a certain manner. I don't know if that's intentional, as to replicate MMOs, or whether it can be chalked up to bad AI. Hopefully Bungie sharpens up that AI a bit, as none of the videos(even the official ones) have shown anything resembling good AI. The big problem though is the gameplay mechanics. Where is the hook? What is it doing on a shooter basis that makes it different from Halo or Borderlands? Bungie played it way too safe here. Why should the player continue dumping time and effort into the game? Loot? That's not enough.

We havent seen what a next gen or cross gen Borderlands would be like, but I'll give you bigger and cleaner. But sexy?

There's as much sexiness and personality in that footage as a rusty oil tanker. Its missing ooomph. Something. Some visual risk taking, an element of danger, something stark and unique that defines the look and feel of Destiny. Not talking about grit or angst or an edginess, but something with impact and character and presence.

I usually hate the word 'generic' and feel that its often just tossed out there without much thought behind it, but in this case I can see where its coming from.

Am also unsure that the RPG mechanics here will be all that deep, especially considering the fact that you use the very same character and gear in competitive multiplayer, and I'm sure that has major ramifications on the overall design in terms of reigning it in. Its a limitation that other games don't really have to deal with.

But anyway, we're on the verge of what must be a major blowout, so who knows how much of this will hold or change in just a matter of a few days.

"The wizard came from the moon."

I used to hope that Bungie would grow big enough balls to openly embrace the silliness of Destiny's setting, but I have to say, playing this shit straight makes it so much funnier. What a dumb game. I love it... I think.

yeah, dinklage sounds bad. has there been any discussion if we'll have different options for those ai tag-alongs (are they called ghosts?)?

Well, that's my opinion yeh.

What do you find so inspired about it?

I agree with you. We just haven't /seen/ anything innovative yet, so when people say it looks generic so far that seems accurate to me.

But then what sets Destiny apart is really the stuff you can't really "see";

Sprawling shared open worlds, long term character development, moving from campaign missions seamlessly into shared activities and back again, exploration, environment story telling etc etc. Destiny is a game-changer for its social elements and long-term investment aspects. These things are not easily showcased in a short video presentation.

People seem to be criticising Destiny for it's lack of innovation in it's core mechanics. This kind of misses the point, but Bungie are actually developing hugely on the standard Halo mechanics (still industry leading btw). If anything, I'm a little concerned that they've over-cooked the combat by adding in the classes/space magic/vast armoury etc.

Having said all that, taking these clips in isolation, the gameplay reminds me enormously of Halo, albeit with a few obvious changes (boo ADS!) and that's hugely encouraging.

They've said there will a proper story campaign like you're used to from Bungie games. They haven't really shown any of that yet however. If they're smart they damn well better start to show some of that stuff at E3 though.

Jesus, that fight against the Wizard was the opposite of what I want in a Bungie game, Hide behind cover, pop out and empty clip, hide behind cover, pop out and empty another clip, etc. I'm surprised Bungie would make a game with such bland gameplay.

Edit: Whomever is the talking voice is horrible. He's practically monotone and the writing seems like little effort was put into it.

that is almost exactly how a lot of people play halo. i wouldnt make judgments off of how combat flows from this guys vids.

My guess is that they'll focus on competitive (because they're Bungie) and high level raids (to show progression, systemic depth and tingle the balls of the more MMOish audience), with a hefty sprinkling of tower socializing (to ground the lore) and some cinematics (for heightened drama).

That'd still be a tall order though :)

Side step, single shot to the back?

Right, which is all good if it's done well and is all actually included in the end.

The problem is we've been in this position many times. Promised X and given Y. And from everything we've seen we're just seeing Y.

I have faith Bungie will deliver, my point is I can understand why people are worried.

RIght, but if ALL we got in the end was Boarderlands 2.5 then it's going to be a let down despite having industry leading combat.

I don't even think Mass Effect was immune from this kind of criticism at some point. Some people will judge off of their impressions because they have limited information available to them and want to say something.

Exactly. That's ADS in a nutshell.

Wolfenstein much recently has proved how stagnating ADS is.

ADS doesn't mean bland enemy encounters by default.

ADS isn't stagnating by default.

And the fact we've been burnt so many times. I totally understand people reacting badly to the footage we've seen when we'e been promised so much.

I like what I see, gameplay looks fun and tight, graphics look good and the menus are glorious. World switching reminds me of Warframe a bit and so does the upgrade system where you change your armor expect in Destiny you can do it on the fly. Add in a 1st person perspective and remove the parkouring of Warframe and I think we just made Destiny. (I'm joking this is the most simple way to describe the game though)

Reminds me of Warframe too, with a lot of Halo and a little bit of Borderlands.

Luckily, those are three amazing games IMO.

The beta is really going to make or break this game for me, and I really don't think I'm going to be alone in that sentiment.

Warframe's combat is extremely lacklustre. The gunplay just doesn't gel with the powers and the high speed of the gameplay. There's literally no tactics to it, it's just spam spam spam.

I sincerely hope the similarities end at "guns + powers".

Sounds like you're confusing your playstyle with the game's depth. This reminds me of what people say about Tekken.

every other tps that had cover was gears. uncharted was gears. mass effect was gears. madworld was gears. everything on every platform was gears. even today the order is supposed to be gears.

now let's wait until every co-op fps that comes out is borderlands.

I find GTA5 to be funnier than all the Saints Row games combined.
