Destiny Alpha Gameplay Leaks [Update: Luke from Bungie comments, read post 1557]

Not in the later games! Which is the way I prefer them.
Eh, I never really thought Hunters were ever interesting to fight against. They're pretty much the only enemies that are bullet sponges (even Halo 2 brutes die with a couple of headshots) and give very little feedback as to how close to dying they are. Looking back it's weird that Bungie never really changed Hunters much in that regard.

Sounds like you're confusing your playstyle with the game's depth. This reminds me of what people say about Tekken.

No, there's really no depth to it at all. I spent 400 hours with the game from closed beta to update 10 because of misplaced faith, but they didn't move away from the treadmill gameplay.

Sure, you can mix it up and have fun creating your own (backflips, wall runs, etc...), but nothing about the way the game is set up encourages or requires it.

The game is a power spam gear check that takes no skill to win.

Bungie know how to do AI and enemy encounters, it's going to be nothing like Warframe.

That's why the gaming gods made fuel rod cannons.

Or shotguns if you don't mind a little worm colony splatter on the ole armor.

Parkour is for secrets in the void and jumps and slides work into your melee and defense, and melee is an entire system of combat on its own now - as in you can run missions with only your melee weapon, with offensive, defensive and custom combination attacks. Its also not a hard gear check as you can defeat level 25-30 enemies with level 5 weapons. You're selling the game way short. But most importantly, its had time to adapt to its playerbase and evolve its systems wholesale. That evolution may prove to be more valuable than hundreds of staff and half a billion in funding, at least for this first installment.

Last bit: Warframe has shit for lore, and the PVP is like many loot games in that its just for kicks, but it does have all kinds of presence and personality. The art style is colorful and crazy unique, and even better in motion. Its real competition.

I am not sure the MP will be for me. I am interested in an open world storyline by Bungie though so I really hope they nail that part of it. The Ghost narrator doesn't seem as fun as Cortana. I hope in the final game that is improved or changed somehow.

YMMV on my comments hereafter

Is it distressing to anyone else that it's June and this is Alpha footage? Granted this could be months old footage leaking, but am I the only one that immediately thought ALPHA? Why is it still ALPHA footage?

Current release date is Sept. 9th right? So you figure the game needs to go gold roughly a month ahead. That's only 2 months away, and we are getting ALPHA footage?!?!?!

There is this little thing on Monday.

It's called E3.

Still looking forward to this more than any other game this year. The game world, while beautiful, does look empty though. It needs wildlife, which just may not be in this area of the game.

Love everything I'm seeing with the combat, although the Hunter with the fire pistol skill is not for me. Warlock with space magic death orbs FTW!

Wish you could actually see the weapons and items you are picking up instead of generic light orbs(currency?).

That has what to do with the fact that this leaked footage is Alpha? So they show the game at E3? I know this.

WTF does that have to do with the fact that this is still Alpha footage?

They've said there will a proper story campaign like you're used to from Bungie games. They haven't really shown any of that yet however. If they're smart they damn well better start to show some of that stuff at E3 though.
Should be interesting if they can deliver on that. So far I'm a little cautious

This might be one of those games where the alpha is actually a beta and the beta actually a demo.

Perhaps they just released the alpha to the testing pool but they have a beta being tested internally.

It's a leak of old code. Why is this distressing? I could upload some alpha footage of ms. Pac Man. Would that make you worry about how Me. Pac Man turned out?

Alpha means something is feature complete and undergoing internal testing. That's what's happening right now, so it's an alpha.

The fact that they're letting people play the alpha doesn't mean that's where they are in development. It just means that's the most reliable/stable build to test.

Yep. And the closest thing to that wizard in Halo were some of the flood forms. Difference is that they were designed to be as a mindless enemies.
I'm more bothered by the Fallen Captains' behavior. The Space Zombie Wizard might also fill some non-combat role like spawning/buffing other enemies (I'm guessing, because it sure didn't seem interested in fighting), so it could have an excuse if it's too busy to deal with the player's bullshit, but the Elite replacements just look like huge cowards and the closest thing to a challenge when dealing with them seems to be catching up as they find new boxes to hide behind, and that's with active energy shields.

Is it odd that the PS4 allows someone to stream alpha code directly from it? Shouldn't there be a system of checks and balances to make sure something like that doesn't happen?

So much of this thread is clearly described as:

Some of the discussion is fine, but so many people speaking in absolutes based on a small sampling of footage and/or having not played. When you are working with such limited information, making objective claims is asinine.

Right... But...

Wizards are part of the Hive race, which from my understanding is basically supposed to be the flood race of Destiny. That's why the basic Hive enemies are essentially space zombies that can run

You're overselling it man. A lot.

Parkour is tacked on mostly. It factors into a few melee moves, and you can use it for traversal effectively in a few places that have been designed for it, but on a moment to moment basis during regular combat the only thing you need to do to efficiently win is spam powers and weapons.

The problem is that the game doesn't require you to put any more thought into it than that, so it never really feels satisfying. You can impose restrictions or difficulty like going up against higher level enemies with lower gear, but that just makes it bullet spongy and boring. IT doesn't do anything to fix the dreadful AI.

Warframe has awesome art, and some great designs, but the game itself is literally just a gear treadmill that takes very little skill to be effective at.

Bungie know how to craft enemy encounters that require you to think, DE don't. The fact they have, for me, provided the best enemy encounters in an FPS so far gives me faith that if they nail the open world stuff this game is going to be miles ahead of games like Warframe and Boarderlands.

It's just a word.
When they release the PS3/4 demo thing they'll call it 'beta'

Late to the party guys. Someone give me a 2 sentence summary of gaf's feelings towards the game (or post a new link)

Some people don't like it for reasons such as "generic" "bad ai" "generic" "ADS" "generic" "looks boring" "looks like borderlands and halo, that's generic"

Some people like it for reasons such as "damn the world looks big" "looks like there a lot to explore" "looks like borderlands and halo, that's a good thing"

And the fact we've been burnt so many times. I totally understand people reacting badly to the footage we've seen when we'e been promised so much.

Skepticism isn't bad - in fact, given the state of the gaming media generally, it's absolutely warranted - but it's quite silly for everyone to become a critic over what is literally biased information. Unless we get some in depth explanations of overall gameplay sometime in the near future, we're only really going to be able to evaluate this game (in some way) come July.

Well, we can't be sure either way. Which is why we're using this thread to discuss it. ;)

That looked brilliant.

Love the idea of the Patrol modes and just getting engaged in these little moments now and again.

Not quite sure why he failed in that clip though. Did the ghost get shot too much or something?

That voice is soooooo dull and annoying.

EDIT: That public event probably looked boring because there was nothing public about it. These are meant to be played with other people, remember.

Combat looked better there than it did in the first two parts of the first leak. Enemies were pretty fucking dumb in the opening waves, but the later dudes looked legitimately challenging. I hope the game proceeds in that fashion as your character evolves, because the bottom-tier Fallen and the Hive are mind-numbingly dull.

You're supposed to stay close to the "ship" to upload data. If you step away from the radius, you stop uploading. There's a time limit on the event, and the player simply failed to get to 100% upload in the time frame. I'd imagine it's more manageable with more people.
