Sony E3 2014 Conference Thread

I was really excited about Project Beast/Bloodborne but was not expecting Grim Fandango on the vita. I.. just. I don't think I've ever been so happy about a remaster.

Decent conference that I'd rate about even to Xbox's one earlier. It had more games I was interested in but the 20 odd minutes in the middle felt like unnecessary padding and Microsoft's presser felt better paced and produced. Bagging Bloodborne (silly name) and No Man's Sky were huge wins and I love Uncharted so seeing the trailer at the end was the icing on the cake. The new Oder demo was great at showcasing a new aspect to the game - I had serious Dead Space vibes from that whole thing. Their third party marketing tie ups/trailers looked very slick indeed (especially Batman).

In the future, I don't think a 90 minute presser from Sony would be the end of the world.

Im a Sony guy, but If we're just talking about how the conferences were laid out, I have to say MS won. Sony derailed everything they had going with that 30 minutes of TV junk and rambling with Layden. You take all that out, and Sony wins. I mean they all had to sit down and go over the sequences of the show right? Who thought it was a good idea to spend a ton of time on a TV show when MS got killed for that sorta thing for an entire year? I love Sony, I just don't get them sometimes.

Microsoft was much better paced... but Sony edges the win for me, it had more "wow" moments, 9/10.

The Order had incredible graphics
Far Cry 4 looked amazing and ridiculous fun. Can't believe it's co-op
Dead Island 2 was perhaps the best directed CG trailer I've ever seen
Grim Fandango, OMG yes
Abzu really spoke to me, that's a day one
No Man's Sky, still can't believe that game is real
The Last of Us Remaster looked great
GTA V looked sick, being able to transfer my 360 save - thank you!
Batman was next-gen as hell
Uncharted 4... I remain convinced that was CG.

Very true.. BUt that ended up being a major factor for Microsoft's demise with the 360, don't you agree?

Them having 0 studios to make games not named Halo/Gears/Forza for them is what killed them. Just because Sony shows off 3rd parties doesn't mean they lose all of their devs.

Thoughts:

The Order's visuals are phenomenal, we shall we how the game-play shakes out
Bloodborne appears fucked, in an amazingly good way
No Mans Sky & ABZU blew me away, serene, retro, adventurous, and beautiful
Uncharted 4, if that's a taste of whats to come graphically... wow, the title (A Thief's End) is killer.
Grim Fandango, pure nostalgia for us geezers
Little Big Planet 3, looks as fun and imaginative as ever, its just not my thing.
TLoU & GTAV... I want to see pricing.
Far Cry 4 looks bonkers, can't wait to slide that into my PC.

The combination of the new Playstation boss talking for what felt like 15 minutes, followed up by the comic show guy talking for another 5 minutes. Ugh.

They also showed some games that just didn't seem worthy of the E3 stage.

BUT, they also showed the most games that got me really excited today. The Order, Uncharted 4, Arkham Knight, No Man's Sky, and the GTA5 announcement. They just had the bigger moments for me. Sony gets my vote for best conference of the day.

My thoughts on the matter.

The double standard is real, this is exactly what MS was rightly eviscerated for last year, and this year Sony gets a pass for surprising with the third sequel to Uncharted.

And the fact that MS' AAA exclusives are being disregarded (c'mon, effing PHANTOM DUST) on gaf really is showing the bias. Come on guys.... We are gamers. Fanboyism needs to die. I'm just as happy about Uncharted as I am Halo MC Collection. We all need to drop the one or the other mentality.

Honestly I don't think Sony went far enough. They should have said "And the PlayStation Nation will enjoy the best console version, as with most 3rd party games". That would have been a factual statement and it would have let everyone who saw the 3rd party reveals in the MS show know that by buying a PS4 all of the 3rd party games shown for both manufacturers are better on PS4. Fanboy shit aside that's a golden egg opportunity. Even Phil Spencer (God bless his attempt) couldn't really answer why you would get a game on XO over the PS4 version. Sony missed a direct nut-kick imo.

Well, damn.
I found it pretty disappointing. :<

I think people were expecting things to be a lot bigger than they actually were. This being the E3 right after a console launch people hyped them selves up to the point they couldn't get down and were thus disappointed. Though everybody should know the real big games don't come out till 2-3 even 5 years after the consoles have launched when people are building engines on architecture that isn't changing all the time and they have solid footing to go crazy. Considering the games shown, I was pretty blown away...even the GTA V upgrade was impressive. Either it's the younger generation that's self entitled or the 30-35 folks that are becoming old and senial way early but the games I grew up on in the 90's make everything out now pretty much look amazing.

I think people again set themselves up for disappointment by expecting the world. Both Sony and Microsoft didn't really drop bombs because I don't think there are many that are ready to drop. And I think the industry is in a place where they are going to be fewer and fewer. Straight third party exclusives are basically gone, so we have to resort to seeing both Microsoft and Sony resort to lame ass exclusive content. It is also early into the generation and I think a lot of the stuff just isn't ready to go yet. People grief EA for showing prototype stuff, but that is exactly where things probably are. Further along than they let on, but not ready to show off properly. So, they gotta show them something. A lot of the games that Sony are working are probably going to be around for next year.

I'd give them a solid 7 out of 10, same with Microsoft. I think Sony had just as many games shown as Microsoft, but the conference itself slowed down to a crawl with the whole PSN stuff and then the Powers bit was just a drag. But then games came back and it got solid again. Sony has a solid lineup, but a fantastic line up for next year; much better than Microsoft, but Microsoft has a better line up for the end of this year (though nothing that will get me to buy an Xbox One yet). Sony looks like they are banking on Destiny, which is strange.

The thing is, I think Sony, ultimately, had bigger announcements. Grim Fandango was crazy, No Man's Sky being timed exclusive, the GTAV reveal (even though it isn't exclusive), Dead Island 2, etc. They premiered a lot of stuff. I think if they cut out the PSN stuff and the Powers stuff, the conference would probably be an 8. All in all, both Microsoft and Sony were pretty even. But both were better than the EA and Ubisoft press conferences.

All in all, a pretty weak E3 this year. It was going to be hard to top last year for sheer enjoyment factor with the console details, etc, etc. I think next year will be a much better showing. Still early into this generation, so next year should be a stronger showing.

Also, Sony announcing PlayStation Now for Canada was nice though.

Looking back at the Sony conference, there wasn't really all that much shown. Grim Fandango was unexpected, but they didn't show anything of it. MGSV trailer was interesting, but also nothing from the game. The Vita was only mentioned in multiplatform releases (I think the only game mentioned in the whole conference that's actually Vita exclusive is Tales of Hearts R) and seems to be pretty much dead.
The stupid movie segment was completely unnecessary and all the talk about exclusive content and betas (or even alpha versions...) pissed me off. The audience should boo them next time for all that exclusive crap. It was also pretty shitty of them to show a trailer with spoilers (The Last of US) at a press conference, I haven't played the game, so this way I simply didn't watch the trailer which couldn't have been the point of showing it.

I guess all in all it was average to okay, a little more variety in the games compared to Microsoft.

My favorite game at E3 so far is still Assassin's Creed Unity.

I don't get you, guys. While they're talking a lot about it, it's rather obvious that E3 is NOT for gamers. It's for general public, for non-specialized media outlets, for investors and such. For people who care a little. If Sony needed to show something to NeoGAF they could just upload it to consoles, you know, without wasting money on special effects.

TV part was something rather obligatory, same as mentioning console features and perspectives. It's like "last year we promised and we delivered". Youtube uploading was constantly requested at firmware threads, so why meh? Actually it killed a bit of MS conference for me - lack of console per se. Just games-games-games with humble "exclusive this, exclusive that" muttering in background.

I give a big plus to Sony for not showing driveclub and dragon's dogma. Everybody knows about them already, so thanks for not wasting my time. And a big minus for lack of PS3/Vita content. At least Vita games were mentioned.

And even bigger minus for not delivering on promised console features like standby, remote play for friend and so on.

Sony really fucked up by talking about that Powers TV show for so long. That really knocked the wind out of that conference's sails. And I can't believe I'm saying this but for the first time in a long time I think I actually enjoyed the MS conference more than Sony's.

Also, fuck Sony for keeping silent on TLOU Remastered release date just to announce the most random date of July 29. What was the point of keeping that a secret? Instead we get fucking Entwined as a surprise day of release. I'm sorry but that really pisses me off.

I gotta say, after this E3 MS and Sony are now neck and neck imo. It's anyone's game. The ONE just needs to start reaching parity with PS4 in the graphics department and MS won't have to worry about a thing.

The double standard is real, this is exactly what MS was rightly eviscerated for last year, and this year Sony gets a pass for surprising with the third sequel to Uncharted.

Crackdown 3
Another fable
Halo 5

Wtf are you talking about? Both companies have strong franchises that sell well. They will continue to bring those experiences to you. I bet if they didn't announce sequels people like you would be crying for them. FOH

So despite that horrible middle part, pacing, and sound issues, Sony's E3 had:

Littlebigplanet 3
Uncharted 4
Infamous: Second Son DLC
The Order: 1886
TLOU Remastered
GTAV announcement
BOMBSHELL Grim Fandango remaster, PS exclusive
Incredible No Man's Sky video
Batman: Arkham Knight gameplay
PS TV coming to US
White PS4

Not sure how anyone can think this was a terrible showing....I think the TLG disappointment is clouding some people.

because they're delusional/clearly exhausted from too much gaming and think that anything that isn't TLG, Half Life 3, and Shenmue 3 is utter disappointment. I hope all three of games ARE released and end up being incredibly disappointing solely because I want to laugh at people here

Anyone with an ounce of subjectivity would not claim one company destroyed the other company this E3. It was a complete stalemate, in terms of # of games shown and # of exclusives shown. Ultimately it all comes down to which games you prefer, but that is hardly "destroying" the competition.

I couldn't have said it better myself. Both Microsoft's and Sony's conferences were about equal. No real huge surprises either way. Like you said, it really just comes down to the games a person prefers. I have a feeling E3 2015 may be a different story though, but then again we'll worry about that one in a year :P

Still scratching my head at what Sony didn't show, like Everquest Next PS4, FFXV or KH3, Guilty Gear Xrd, Deep Down, Drive Club, or announce PSO2 as a PS4 F2P game (my wishful thinking).

Plus, I'm a little disappointed there wasn't a Mass Effect 4 or BGE2 reveal (or realistically ME4).

Which had more games I want to buy? And better versions of multiplats?

Pretty easy answer: Sony. That's the most important part of these conferences, really.

I don't know what you don't get. They're being dismissed because they're CGI trailers dude, and they're years off. CGI shows nothing, it's as good as just saying "Game X is coming".

People will get hyped for them when MS actually shows them, next E3.

Feels like I'm on a different planet than some others. MS conference took this one? What? I mean I know different opinions and all, but everyone I've talked to thought the MS conference was horrible, and that Sony knocked it out of the park.

The middle of Sony's conference was a little slow, but even during that time they were still announcing some nice things. And over 80% of their announcements were big surprises and/or amazing. 80% of Microsoft's were stuff we already knew about and completely mediocre. And they didn't even show Gears of War.

I thought it was overall good except for the lull, but to me the big disappointment was that Uncharted 4 teaser, which was basically not much more than we got a year ago. If anyone was waiting for concrete proof of the troubled development of that game, there it is. It was basically nothing.

Far Cry 4 in some ways stole the show, that was a seriously good demo.

Since everyone else is doing it, here's my rundown / thoughts on the conference as a whole:

- Destiny looks very "meh". The visuals didn't really impress me, and the entire trailer felt very much like it desperately wants to be Halo, almost as though Bungie can't escape the shadow of their mega franchise. Not impressive, and actually disappointing given the hype the game had behind it months ago.

- The Order: 1886 looks absolutely rubbish. The visuals are stellar, but the gameplay just looks terrible. Hopefully there's much more to it than what was shown, because it appears to be a ho-hum third person shooter designed around scripted scenarios and quick time events, and the way it was all rolled out just seemed very drab and boring.

- Entwined looks nice, but there didn't appear to be much to that game. It looks like something that would be a neat 99 cent app to try for a few minutes, but I wouldn't pay $9.99 for it.

- InFamous DLC didn't really pique my interest, but I'm not a fan of this franchise. Maybe fans of the other games would be excited for this one?

- LittleBigPlanet 3 is the last thing I wanted to see today. Media Molecule has yet to make a truly good game, in my opinion, as each of their two existing designs is hindered in some ways. Tearaway lacked challenge and didn't actually feel like a solid platformer until the final area of the game, but it was the better design of the two. Little Big Planet has always felt like a sloppy, floaty mess of a platformer, and the gameplay makes it look like nothing has changed this time around.

- Bloodborne has absolutely piqued my interest, and the trailer looked incredible, but there wasn't much shown. The 2015 titles, of which there are many, don't do much for this conference, in my eyes, as they're basically glorified teaser trailers.

- Far Cry 4 is Far Cry. I honestly could not get even slightly excited for this game. I was bored just watching it play.

- Dead Island 2 had a terrible trailer. Why does this game even exist, exactly? The first game got a pretty damn mediocre reception overall.

- Magicka 2 is something I'm excited for, but the trailer wasn't impressive. I'm not sure how you'd do an impressive trailer for this title, but that wasn't it.

- Grim Fandango Remastered was announced. How hyped was I for that picture of Tim holding that letter? Not nearly as hyped as I would've been for a full-on trailer.

- Let It Die. Appropriate title for my feelings about this one.

- Abzu looks amazing. I'm psyched to try that out. I wasn't at all interested in Journey, but this one looks like a winner.

- No Man's Sky is, so far, one of the most impressive games I've seen at E3. The visuals, the concept, and the general design just seem incredible. Unfortunately, I doubt this game releases anytime soon, and by that I mean I bet we see it late 2015.

- Ratchet & Clank Remastered was announced, after the boring trailer for the movie. I have the HD Collection. Why would I need this?

- Mortal Kombat X looks fantastic. It's great to see so many new faces in the series. Hopefully, it's even better than the last game, which was excellent.

- The Last of Us Remastered is what it is. It doesn't excite me since the game just came out last year.

- Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain looks good, but I'm just done with that franchise. The story has become a nonsensical mess.

- GTAV Remastered was announced. Please see my The Last of Us Remastered comments.

- Batman: Arkham Knight got a new trailer, and the game looks good, though I think Rocksteady are losing sight of what makes Batman who he is. I hope this is the last one, and they move on to tackle a new IP.

- Uncharted 4: A Thief's End got a shiny new teaser. The only new info we got is that Nathan Drake is back. Shocking. This is actually the perfect game to end the conference, since it carries the general message across very well: Forget about 2014, just think of how awesome 2015 will be!

Missing in action: DriveClub, Final Fantasy XV, Kingdom Hearts 3, and The Last Guardian. Vib Ribbon was teased twice for seemingly no reason. PS Vita got scraps.

My overall score for Sony: 5/10. Next year, focus more on the year at hand, and also improve the flow and presentation of the event.

Microsoft showed a bunch of third-party games that I will play on my PS4 (and would never play on an Xbone) and a couple of exclusives that I either don't care about at all or only have a mild interest in. Their press conference didn't even come close to making me want to buy their system which they really need to do somehow. C-

Sony showed a bunch of third-party games that I will play on my PS4 and some exclusives that I am super fucking excited for. Also, Bloodborne. And I will definitely be picking up a Vita TV. A+
:|

Fable we already knew about, the other two are CGI that told us nothing and are years off.

Here's how I view, MS had much better pacing. Sony delivered on the content, the games were all there (barring TLG). So Sony won it for me since, obviously, I care about the games even if they did have a dreadful 30 Minute section.

I thought all those games are coming in 2015?

because they're delusional/clearly exhausted from too much gaming and think that anything that isn't TLG, Half Life 3, and Shenmue 3 is utter disappointment.

Let's be fair -- I don't think anyone really thought Sony's E3 lineup was going to be as barren as it actually is. All the predictions were way way way beyond what they actually showed. Even The Order was a mega-brief gameplay demo that barely had any gameplay.

So despite that horrible middle part, pacing, and sound issues, Sony's E3 had:

Littlebigplanet 3
Uncharted 4
Infamous: Second Son DLC
The Order: 1886
TLOU Remastered
GTAV announcement
BOMBSHELL Grim Fandango remaster, PS exclusive
Incredible No Man's Sky video
Batman: Arkham Knight gameplay
PS TV coming to US
White PS4

Not sure how anyone can think this was a terrible showing....I think the TLG disappointment is clouding some people.

Don't forget the first look at MKX gameplay.
