PS Vita TV coming to West as Playstation TV, $99

I hope this means more media apps for Vita (and PS4).

I'm tempted to grab one for the spare room just for remote play PS4 games. If they add iplayer/netflix/amazon instant video etc then I could switch out my Apple TV.
You can expect remote Blu-ray from PS4 to Playstation TV also.

It's not region locked, it just doesn't support accounts from regions it hasn't been released in.

So...it's region locked. It doesn't play 99% of US Vita games yet or support accounts yet. It may only be temporary, but it's still region locked.

The decision meshes well with the "all in one" sort of experience that the device offers. If you're going to play PS1/PS2/PS3/PSP games on the PlayStation TV, a DS3 is closer to those controllers' inputs.

Huh? A DS4 is basically a DS3 with a touch pad. Save for the analogue face buttons, but barely any game used that anyway.
It's also meant to play games streamed from a PS4, so that's gonna be a problem without the touch pad.

It's an option if you also have a PS4 but you'll have the DS4 anyway in that case because you own the PS4. I guess to me it just seems unnecessary to bundle the DS4 if you just want to buy the machine for the non-PS4 related aspects.

I'd expect that to change as the release looms closer. Considering that the Vita TV was only available in parts of Asia until now, it kind of makes sense that it was locked to those stores. Maybe they'll remove the restriction once it comes out everywhere else? (for the most part) Still, the issue of a lack of compatibility may still remain. Are most new titles in Japan compatible with the Vita TV from launch?

Excellent, I was really close in buying one on ebay for $99 including shipping last week. And very good that they dropped the Vita. It might actually have a chance of selling decently now.

This is the problem though. Sony really needs to make it live up to the "TV" name. More media apps/better media support is definitely needed. I understand that Sony want it to sell ps+ subscriptions, but very few will buy it unless they can use it for media as well.

But that's not a region lock. That's a lack of support for other regions it hadn't released in. Not a lock.

They need to go all-in with the Playstation TV. No half assed delivery and execution plan. I'm ok with dropping the VITA name. If this sells a good bit .. that's more VITA compatible hardware and that's fine by me!

It should have been bundled with Minecraft. A cheap device to play a full console version of Minecraft!

Might buy one for PS1 and PSP games. My Vita will suffice for Vita games, but this device plus a memory card will free up a lot of space on my Vita and PS3.

Was going to get a Vita.....now Im not.

Same, 99 it's a pretty good price to get to play all the free ps plus games I already have.

I have a question to psVitaTv GAFfers, does remote play on this works exactly as is does on the vita? Can I just bring this to a friend house instead of the whole ps4 and play some co-op game through it?

A free game download of choice would be more appealing. Getting anyway. Hope it's hack able for xbmc.

Does it have dlna support? Probably not. :(

Excellent point .. I don't mind playing the PS1 and PSP games on my bigger screen. I assume the scaler works well.

Thank god the Puzzle by Nikoli series is available. Surely they'll add more compatible games once it's available in NA. What would make a Vita game not compatible with Vita TV?

It wouldn't be compatible with games that have a heavy dependence on certain Vita hardware features such as the touch screen, rear touch pad, or camera. Tearaway is a good example of this.

Good thing they skipped Vita in the product name, but I'm shocked they didn't mention it at all in the features: "it plays PS3 and PS1 games from the PSN, PS4 remote play in another room and it will work with PS Now".

They did mention Vita game compatibility in the press conference.

has sony hinted at all if they'll be enhancing remote play so that its no longer limited to 30fps? this is really the only thing killing the vita tv for me

So I don't have a Vita, so I don't know how remote play works. But I am interested in this so I can play PS4 games and PS Now in another room. Does this allow us to use a DS4 or just the DS3? And what is the quality of the stream over ethernet? Good enough, or terrible?

So with the release of this do you think SCEA will be interested in licensing the psp and ps1 games again? Crash? Spyro?

I really want to see what Apps will be available on this... i'm hoping for at least Hulu+, NHL game center and Plex (then i won't have to get a Roku for my spare TV)

Great as a PlayStation Extender and PlayStation WayBack Machine (PSone games and all), I think. But I keep my PS4 in my bedroom, so I don't see the point. But for a lot of others, there seems to be a lot to it for the price.

...But I'm curious what Sony expects this box will do; I can't imagine it's going to push Vita software sales to new heights considering the North American reaction to the platform and there are plenty of other devices that do the media box thing. The consumers who might be most interested in the PlayStation TV's ability to offer nostalgia might own other PlayStation devices and are enjoying the digital content that way.

Any places in the UK got product listings yet? This should hopefully be £80 or less.

Oh, definitely. Or Killzone Mercenary post-PS TV patch. Lego game bundles always scream "we had nothing else to bundle" to me.

It seems like a huge missed opportunity. Minecraft is selling like hotcakes, and this could have been a cheap entry price to play it for those who don't have it yet.

I don't know if it would really have been a system seller when most kids would rather play on tablets and phones.

Between the price, PS4 remote play and the access to Vita games this is a pretty appealing product. But I only use one television and I have an Apple TV, so I'm on the fence for now. If it can play Hot Shots and Lumines I might not have a choice....

Great news, specially for people who can't afford next gen consoles. And well, in the long term it will allow you to play games from all the Sony consoles and portables in addition to stream stuff from your PS4 so it's great.

Now will play PS1, PSP, Vita, Minis and PS Mobile, PS4 through Remote Play and soon PS3/PS2 stuff through PS Now. This is a lot of content.

Didn't I read during the PS Vita TV reveal in Japan that this can throw your Vita games onto a TV? I saw nothing about that feature during this PS TV reveal.

Yeah, it has a Vita cartridge slot. I think they blew right past it at the E3 address.

they should have included minecraft instead of Lego.

This would've made a lot of sense -- especially because parents looking to buy their kids a budget system for Christmas would be set. I know a few parents (with Minecraft-obsessed kids) who would buy it on sight, if they saw it in a store.

Yeah, I guess they changed the name from Vita TV to PS TV because Vita does not have brand recognition. PS TV can play TV games, allows use of PS NOW (which is new), and stream PS4 to other rooms.
I will probably put it in the bedroom. Have they confirmed if you can use your Vita as a controller? I would love to play Tearaway on a big screen!

Phew! I didn't make that up in my excitement then. Really looking forward to using my already-owned PS4, PS Vita and the future purchased PS TV box in conjunction with one another. Not having to move the PS4 around the house all the time to different TVs, Remote Playing the PS4 on the PS Vita, and throwing the PS Vita's screen onto a big TV are all KILLER features.

As long as this means that I can finally play Persona 4 Golden, I'm all in for this Day One. This was the announcement I was anticipating.

And I was hoping for a big Vita price drop.
