Destiny Alpha Thread: Impressions from the wild [Code Begging=ban]

The lighting looks top notch so far, not sure I've seen an iffy screen yet.

Yup. The lighting really has come a long way. It's without a doubt one of the strong suits of the game. When you get into an old abandoned building and start wondering around it really shows it off.

Ugh, this wait sucks. Too many lucky peeps got into the early alpha! Anyways the game looks outstanding. The lighting is something else. The giant bomb guys saw the shadow of the player at the beginning and looked real good.

As excited as I am for this game, I was not expecting impressions to be this good. Oh please let me get into the Alpha.

The floating snow particles make it look better in person too. :)
Does the snow accumulate over time? Some of the Giant Bomb guys brought it up, but it seemed kind of inconclusive.

My shadow keeps freaking me out. I was running past these vertical pillars, and the light source was on the other side, so that my shadow started flicking in and out of existence on the far wall, which caused me to turn and fire on my own shadow.

A few things:

An option to turn off the numbers in combat would be nice. Unless I'm missing something, I don't see it.

Also, the walking animation looks a little floaty/weird at the Tower in third person.

Oh wow, that's amazing! Bungie could make a legit horror game with their lighting.

Yeah the walking animation on the Tower gave me flashbacks to Skyrim 3rd person haha.

Also, there doesn't seem to be any audio options, though I assume they'll be in the full game.

Are people really expecting not to get an invite? Sony is running PS4 commercials during the NBA Finals tonight telling people essentially that if they buy a PS4 now they will be able to play the Destiny Alpha this weekend. There's not small print during the ad stating you may or may not be selected.

My take on Destiny and ADS is that you're going to need to use ADS for anything other than close to short range, unless the enemy is really big. I went back and forth, firing from the hip in tight corridors, or when they'd get too close, and using ADS for mid to long range shots.
Damn, I was hoping Bungie would use the same type of ADS as Bioshock (pretty much completely optional, as it only gives you a little bit of zoom) instead of the much more annoying COD variant (random vectors forcing you to use ADS if you want to be somewhat accurate) That, added to the fact that jumping will also reduce your accuracy, pretty much guarantees Destiny will not be a shooter I love. I may still love it as an RPG, like Skyrim, because of the exploration and all, but yeah, it won't be a great shooter.

Well, there's always the Master Chief Collection I guess...

They sort of already have. It can be spooky down in the dimly lit tunnels by yourself. In the very first mission, you walk into a dark room with nothing but a small flashlight, and the room is too big to be effectively lit by it, but you can hear them in the room, and when you flick your light to the side, you catch them just as they come leaping at you.

Just got a message saying I've reached maximum alpha level but I'm only level 8. Is that the max level in beta right now?

So all you badasses with this alpha, what can you tell me about weapon upgrades? What's available so far ? How does the system roughly work? What can you break down, or add to the guns?

If you're at E3, hit up the Activision booth.

Playing competitive multiplayer, exactly what you'll find in the Alpha.

I'm a Community Mentor, on behalf of Bungie.net. We have a few others, as well as employees walking around helping you fight your first battles.

Yeah I remember seeing that during the video I watched. I was shocked by how atmospheric it looked.

Also I feel so left out without being in the alpha yet. It seemed more and more people are suddenly getting early access. At least there's videos out there to watch! :)

Well shit, if people are having spare codes, I'll gladly take one. :o

Yeah that's how I feel! Haha!

I'm guessing if you haven't gotten an Alpha invite yet at this point then its a no go until July?

Nah, the invites don't really go out until Thursday!

I know if I had a key, Id be streaming hah. Battlefield doesnt satisfy the need for a fun shooter for a couple of days. If only playing the Halo 2 beta and the Halo 3 alpha counted for anything :P

No. All these people playing now have connections or are special in some way... I guess. You can still sign up. The movie thater people have to wait until Thursday too.

Really hoping I get into the 3 day alpha. Would love to get some hands-on time with the game before the beta next month. The screens, impressions and videos today have been pretty awesome.

Down on the d-pad sits....

A few more..

That's a couple more. You lied!
=P

Looking good though. Glad I can try this Thursday. I've been wondering if I'd feel any different about this game from other FPS games. I got burnt out on the genre after so many on 360. Nothing's really changed my opinion on them yet. Even Killzone on PS4 didn't do it. I'm not into the competitive multiplayer shooting so that part is not something I'll play much of.
