Splatoon (Nintendo 4x4 team shooter, Wii U, 2015)

I've been waiting for Nintendos take on FPS or TPS for a LONG time.
Was always hoping that they'd release like Mario Paintball or whatever...

This looks way better than I'd ever hoped.
May actually pick up a Wii U for this (haven't owned a Nintendo system other than Gameboys and a DS).

Are you... trying to try troll us? Some NSFW pics in there, man, c'mon

Really, props to Nintendo for going the new IP route with this game. It would have been so easy to just slap Mario on this and make it Mario Paintball. "In this game the Mario you know and love has a new ability: Transformation into Blooper! As Blooper Mario you glide through the ink with ease." Great for marketing with Mario in the name, they could create some funny clips with Mario popping out of ink etc. The restraint from whoever's in charge is much appreciated.

Part of me wishes this game used Mario characters because the game concept is so brilliant I want it to reach a wider audience.

Am I a bad person GAF?

(I also think the SPLATOON name is gna be hard to market)

If you paint the wall, can you hide in the wall as a way to do a way better trap then hiding in the ground? That would seem like one the best kind of hiding place, but didn't see anyone try and do it.

Yes. Building game concepts and then slapping the Mario label on it is kinda what got Nintendo into the mess they're in. New IPs will attract new people, not just Mario people

I doubt anyone has developed more complex strategies for all the stuff this kind of game could potentially engender. The game will naturally require some new thinking about optimization in competition.

You nailed it. They could've easily had made this a Mario spinoff. But they resisted the temptation (if the temptation was ever there), and did the right thing by making it a fresh new IP.

I dont know, the ink and squid theme is so ingrained in the game that I wouldnt want to separate it. The name is shit tho.

Um... given all the day -1 fan art I don't think the game is gonna have any problem with marketing...

I would be more worried about the audience this ends up being marketed to....

Hopefully this game is viewed as a success financially/critically by Nintendo so they don't have to resort to tried tactics like that in a sequel.

It was just one of the first thoughts in my head when they said you could hide in the paint. Just wanted to see if anyone saw anything about hiding on the walls.

Well another thing is since the walls generally receive less coverage and attention they could also be used as a sort of "way around" getting too into combat and allow for backdoor type strategies.

Ah man I can't imagine a coordinated team with some very creative offensive and defensive set-ups. This game is giving me a bunch of ideas on how you can play it. I just want it in my hands right now.

There was someone trying that during the Treehouse stream earlier today. The presenters loved it. The player was able to hide out high up on one of the walls, and did try to ambush someone from there, if I recall. A potential downside is that the player had to keep moving upwards to avoid slipping down, and that caused tell-tale movement ripples to appear on the wall.

This looks cool, but the community has to be there.

That is what will decide if it lives on and honestly, I'm not sure it will succeed in that department seeing as how other games on Wii U do. It might be even more problematic to overcome when it is a totally new IP.

It will be hot for a month or two, and then a majority will just flock away.

I mean marketing to the widest audience possible though. The name sounds more childish than usual for Nintendo.

Mario people are a pretty big bunch.

Part of the fact that I am so surprised and excited about this games comes from the fact that they did not go the Mario route.
I'd rather have them create a whole 'universe' around this than having any variation of the Mario universe at play.

I also strongly believe they'll have more freedom to do what they want with something new, rather than having to go with the general guidelines of the Mario universe, as vast and varied as it can be.

I'd be perfectly fine with Nintendo items/outfits if there is some customization in the game though.

It's crazy how dynamic the gameplay gets. One moment you're shooting the walls for points, the next you're getting shot at by the other team, causing you to turn into squid mode to run away. But then the other team is covering your paint with theirs so you're frantically trying to avoid the other color area. Then your friend backs you up and there's just this battle for territory happening. So much fun.

One other thing to point out is how well designed the one map was. There's multiple side alleys lead to higher ground on chokepoints for an advantage. And there are lower levels that help you get different angles on people above. Then there are gates that you could only pass by shooting paint and going under using squid mode.

Just an overall fun game that I'm really excited about. I can't wait to see what else they add
This is awesome to hear.

Yeah, exactly. Like, your brain has to wrap itself around a completely new way of considering how to play these kinds of games (and yeah... I wanna play this. Like, yesterday).

I really don't get that impression at all. I feel like any adult would instantly gravitate towards this for its gorgeous and interesting style, while kids will gravitate towards it for the fun of painting all the things. Adults my gravitate towards that too, actually. :P

That sounds like the kind downside I expected to it, but if you get players that are focused on the ground then it is well worth the trap. There's so many things to do with such a simple mechanic I love it.

Oh don't get me wrong, I love that they're going the new IP route - but part of me wishes that more people would buy this than I can foresee happening with its more childish artstyle and name.

Also, pretty much everyone gravitates more towards what the text looks like than what the text actually is (they've done research on this... it's why Helvetica is used for New York's subway system).

I definitely understand where you are coming from. The name doesn't really sit too well, and the character designs don't do much for the game's appeal either. I can already see me showing this to someone and they completely dismiss it because of the character designs. Hell, I'd have probably done the same thing had I not seen it in motion.

I hope this is a hit because it looks fun as hell and I want an active online community. The buzz seems extremely positive at least.

The squid form looks so much like a blooper I'm wondering if they were considering it early on. When the trailer started I was like "Oh no, please not a SMS remake like WW."

Yup. I'm thinking regular ground stealth might be too easily abused in comparison since there are no tells. Maybe it should occasionally ripple even if you don't move.

The big jump to go across the map by targeting a player on your team is also quite brilliant, think about the possibilities for offense/defense, all is needed is one person to slip beyond a choke point and mayhem begins ! :D

I suspect most people will probably see it in motion before they see still images. I don't have stats of course, but I have a hard time imagining people making back-of-the-box decisions in 2014. Though even the still images of it hardly look bad (plus the game looks very child friendly to a casual observer).

Yeah I'm glad that fan art is out there, solidifies the character in the mind of the public.

Make that chick an iconic character.

I hope nintendo is aware of all the positive buzz this is getting, this is the buzz EA hoped destiny would get.

This is the only mechanic I'm majorly worried about. It seems a bit too easy to just warp your whole team to one area without working for it. I have some ideas like paint coverage or special spawn totems that you have to capture to then be able to warp teammates but It's kind of late to go into it.

Thing is if you do that, the team all in one area, yes you have max inking power but that leaves the rest of the map wide open for two or three of the opposing team to slip away and freely gobble up territory.

It's also a double edged sword with the result of the match being calculated on the % of the map painted.

I'm sure they are.
People generally love Nintendo's new IPs(Wii Sports/Resort, Pushmo, Dillon, Steel Diver, Sakura Samurai, etc.).
However, a lot of other people tend to ignore them when they're not big retail releases or when they're non-character driven casual IPs or when they're really obscure.

Luckily for Splatoon it's a heavily promoted quirky character driven retail TPS that's not on eShop.
:P

God the gameplay mechanics are so fucking thought out, everything has a perfect but fair counter.

you said it word for word.

It seems weird that this game is 2015 going by how polished the demo looks.

I'm hoping that this means they're working on single player content. I would love for this to be a fully fleshed out new IP - something more than a multi only arena shooter.

Wonder if there are variation modes.

This looks like it could be really competitive, but it seems too frantic to keep up with (for competitive sport-watching).

I wonder if there are some variations. For example, a pre-round minute to spray as much paint as possible, and then a round actually begins where you play a mode (CTF, for example etc), without the ability to paint over anything

And what about paintball grenades? :P

I absolutely love the idea of painting walls, where wallpainting does not have an effect on your score. Just sounds very layered when it comes to strategy and high-level planning/thinking.

This has some really good potential, and I hope it takes off.

I think it won't be an easy exploit because the purpose of the game isn't to kill the enemy. If you jump to where the action is you will probably leave another part of the map completely at the mercy of your opponents. Nintendo was really smart to make this game about more than just shooting other players.

Also, it looked like you could only jump to areas that were painted your color, not sure though.

I know it's not "needed", but I wonder how much bigger this could have been if Nintendo used Nintendo characters. It could have been like Mario Kart/SSB and really gotten a foot in the shooter area. Not entirely serious, but good enough to be competitive and fun to watch.

Not to say that using original characters is a bad thing, but Nintendo characters really would have taken it to another level, at least when it came to getting attention. The game seems like it will stand on its own.

A SP component may help with that.

I really hope they flesh it out like crazy and add a single player mode. A campaign mode with these mechanics and cool enemies could be just amazing. One of my most hyped games of an incredible 2015. Go Nintendo! Kicking some ass!

It would have been no bigger, would fail to have the squid mechanic, and would not have blessed us with an awesome new IP.
