Splatoon (Nintendo 4x4 team shooter, Wii U, 2015)

Abusing auto-jump to make a big push in the enemy base is a misconception I can see a lot of League players would fall into before realizing that penetrating enemy base is less significant than they think. Heck, even regular team FPS players would probably fall into that trap. It's an weird feeling having to readjust to the whole "turf war" objective, like it peels back at a lot of conventions a typical genre gamer is used to by this point.
 
Well lets say it's a stalemate in the middle of the map, 4 vs 4. One team takes out 3 on the other team. As long as that one holdout is alive she will have reinforcements coming in an instant which could lead to another stalmate. In most other games there would be a more severe punishment in the form of having to walk the whole way there, wasting time, and probably that last teammate getting killed. In Splatoon you only need to wait for the spawntime then you're right back where you were.

Maybe the jumps are perfectly balanced to the gameplay, I haven't played, but it definitely has me concerned.

Edit: And I am taking into consideration kills dont matter, just territory and potential territory.
 
The graphics look really great in this game. Interested in seeing what kind of other maps and terrain we'll see.

At first I was kinda surprised at the fast turnaround for fanart but it makes sense. The characters look legit awesome. Hopefully it's not too deep into 2015 because I'm itching to get my hands on this. Looks amazing. The music from the trailer has been stuck in my head all day lol.

I really glad nintendo didn't just slap mario into this and instead make it a brand new ip. Super exited to see more of it

Well, Nintendo seems to be the only publisher who spends the time to actually finish their games before release. Of course that leads to us seeing gameplay footage (or even playing the game) that looks almost finished a year before the game actually comes out, but it's worth it in the end.
 
Supposing that two teams are equally matched, the winning strategy in a Turf War game will revolve around carefully timing the final push. There'll be enough of a window and room for error that the team that messes up even slightly will most likely lose coverage. I think the super-jump mechanic itself will encourage a dominant team to always keep track of their enemy, as anyone can sneak into the opposing base, get a buddy who's respawned all the way in there, and proceed to flank from behind enemy lines.

Modifiers for Turf War that would work well: Sudden Splatter (modifier for all game modes where the round goes overtime, forcing respawns off), Economy (players all have a large, finite quantity of paint they cannot recharge (one for the team or per player?), forcing strategic use of paint; winning requires meeting a set coverage quota as well), Stop and Go (red-light-green-light mode where penalties are severe), Just Won't Stick (normal paint gun won't stick to surfaces, gaining no coverage but supplying fast lanes and cover; bombs and super-weapons must be used to up the percentage).
 
The ink mechanics are genius. It's not only a tool for offense and defense, but it creates objectives since victory is dependent on the amount of space you cover. This opens up room for all kinds of strategies. I'd love to see this game's competitive scene a year or two after its release.
 
You know.. they could still have representation from other Nintendo franchises in the form of shirts, hats, and costumes.

Running around with an ink cannon wearing a Luigi Hat, shirt, pants, and shoes. Hell.. you could even say that would be worth.. I dunno... a DOLLAR for the costume? Or you could get it for half off if you have the Luigi Amiibo and you place it on the Game Pad.

See where I'm going with this?

I need this game and yes. I would buy Nintendo related costumes. Hell, they could license out other things as paid DLC as well. Think about it, dress your Squid Kid up in -say- Elsa's dress from Frozen or your favorite Sports Teams Jersey for a small fee....
 
Really glad Nintendo aren't slapping Mario on every new idea now. Looks fun, though this game would be hidden in a montage in anyone else's conference, it's like a cool indie title. This needs to be start of a major push for new IPs.
 
SQUID KIDS FOR SMASH

This game completely caught me off guard. A really simple yet brilliant idea (kind of reminds me of the gel in Portal 2). I hope they can deliver good single player content, might be hard to in an arena shooter but we'll see. It looks like an amazing multiplayer game though, hopefully the online isn't screwed up.
 
I fully agree that one of the reasons that this game caught my attention is because its a game with new characters. I wonder how much Nintendo will push this game.

Are there many gameplay footage from 2015 games that looks unfinished though? Generally speaking, it could also be a case of content creation. I mean, that what we see in the gameplay trailers are usually small portions of the game which the developers might have finished (or nearly finished) for demostration purposes, while the full game is still missing many levels/maps and items etc.. Pre-recorded footage naturally wont show any bugs happending and they dont show any potential balancing issues either (like if one weapon is superior in every way). So it might be hard to gague how much work thats needed to be done before the full game is completed. Then there is also a question about how many that are working on the games. If its a smaller team, it might take a longer time to finish a game. And 2015 could mean early 2015 as well, which is only about a half year away.

All that said though, what we've seen from Splatoon does indeed look great, i fully agree :)
 
I'm really shocked and pleased by the reaction this game has been receiving. Shocked because I was initially put-off by the character design, but many people seem to love it (some maybe too much, in the wrong way), and pleased because it looks so clever mechanically and genuinely fun, and people seem to be responding to that. Hopefully Nintendo takes advantage of the momentum they've built here so far and roll this out as a worthwhile product that's met with some success.

It looks so unlike Nintendo in some ways, aesthetically and mechanically, but still makes sense coming from them. In some ways it feels like an expansion of their brand as much as Bayo 2 or Devil's Third. That's part of what makes it so interesting. You want a new Nintendo IP, here it is.
 
This is legit one of the most interesting games shown this E3 so far. I can already see how this can be a serious competitive game. Kind of like those Quake arena games they show on this old UK channel I sometimes get to see sometime back.
 
As far as DLC goes, Nintendo-brand stuff would be quite awesome. The Inklings are well-designed to start with, but buying a cheap Blooper costume pack would rock. There seems to be a commercial enterprise theme going on within the environments, too (lotsa shop signs!).

I'm shocked by the sheer quantity of fanart this game has gotten overnight btw. Less shocked by how little of it is SFW.

Yeah, they would hide it because nobody would have any trust in a game like that and it would probably be developed by a pretty inexperienced or bad studio, even maybe having to do it in their free time, with the budget of a $10 game.

Except it's the opposite, because the concept has a lot of potential and the execution seems even better so far, but more importantly, because Nintendo put their trust in it, and they weren't "afraid" of showing it and putting it in the spotlight alongside their biggest franchises.
 
I love that it's a new IP and all...but this title is practically screaming to have some sort of Mario Sunshine reference in it, with the whole paint mechanic and the colorful visuals. Here's hoping!

This is bound to be bigger than 101.
It looks incredibly accessible, and it's not based around graphic violence.
If they market it correctly they could create a new Smash or MK.
We'll see how much Nintendo believes in this project in the coming months, I'm sure.

Am I the only one that think this game stemmed from Super Mario Sunshine Fluud mechanics?

Art is weird but it reminds me of '90 Sega

It IS possible, Nintendo's the king of local MP, if they wanted they could easily find a way to implement it without being a disadvantage or an annoyance. It's just a matter of hopping they don't want people to focus on the gamepad's unique capabilities.

And nope, we don't know if it'll have any kind SP mode, but if it indeed is a retail full game, you can bet your house it'll have it.

might have been a closer call than we might know. This could have easily ended up as a mode in Mario Party or Wario Ware but desperate times I guess


I love that is has new characters also shocked that the Trademark for Splatoon did not leak

hopefully they take the time to really flesh it out more it looks promising and speaking of flesh I hope for a little "diversity" before it becomes a sore point in some future review squid or no squid be aware of diversity while people are loving the fact that female gender has been well represented give them another reason to praise your games

I'm super excited about this game. I hope they take the time to offer a substantial number of levels, and one player content along with some story and side challenges.

And yeah, Mario as a guest character with the Sunshine Water Pack would be amazing.

Course the trailer opened up with the Nintendo Network logo so who knows what the plan for it is. I'm really hoping it has local splitscreen.

As for map jumping, did they say you can jump anywhere or do you tap on a teammate? I thought I heard the latter but could've misinterpreted it. If the latter it could be binded to some unused buttons, like one to cycle through teammates and another to map jump. Or if the former I guess a map toggle hold button and cursor/pointer to pick a jump point...crappy with analog sticks but would be somewhat quick with the remote pointer.

Edit: read some impressions saying you tap on a teammate, so cycle+jump button scheme should be possible.
