The metaphor still doesn't apply. We don't know anything about Splatoon other than what we've seen in trailers and videos, and I don't like the art style. I never said anything about wanting grays or browns or anything like that, but the game still looks ugly. For some reason you were offended by this and tried to say something to sound smart, but as I've already pointed out, what you said makes absolutely no sense. Basically, your post was the stupidest one I've seen in a while, and you should probably avoid making posts like that in the future.
 
you can control the camera with the analog stick, it was stated on the treehouse stream yesterday

any frenetic camera work is the result of someone playing the game and doing weird shit the the analog stick, or maybe using gyro controls -- they can be turned off

I just hope i'll not get bore to shoot at walls and floors.
Maybe it's possible to play it and almost always chase enemies while the rest of the team paint everything.

it's really sad this game is not for this year.

It serves the game design well.

And the game design itself seems to be very solid.

This is my last post to you since it is obvious that you are trolling. Saying a game is cheap is much different than not liking the art style.

You're both grasping at straws. He's saying that because you think this is ugly, you think that the opposite which is the most common situation, which are also generally saturated in Browns and Grays, is what you're looking for, and you're saying that's not true, but are slinging your opinions as absolutes because you haven't been sold on the game yet.

It's fine if you don't like it, and it's fine if he does. Stop getting mad at video games.

Compared to Battlefield and COD, I'm sure that from a purely financial standpoint, this game will be cheap.

The game has an art style that looks similar to cheaply games. The art style looks pretty generic to me, something you'd expect from a game with little work put into it. I'm not even the only one who's saying this, other people are as well. And I have no problem with the gameplay, I just hate the art style which is keeping me from really getting interested. It's not trolling to dislike an art style, its trolling to attack someone for not liking it.

If that is a viable strategy, the sniper rifle is going to be the most efficient way of doing it.

Enemies explode into a mass of your ink when they are hit, so keep your distance and snipe them. You'll still need your own ink on the floor though for movement and reloading.

I mean...you should actually explain what "lt looks like cheaply made games" is, because that's a gigantic blanket statement that means nothing. Child of Light was a cheaply made game. Comparitively speaking, Journey was a cheaply made game. And this game is still slated for 2015 so things are obviously going to change between this reveal and it's launch. If it's not your thing, it's not your thing, but saying, "EH...this looks cheap, so I don't want it," is needlessly reductive.

The more I think about it, the more I think that they could pull off a really fun singleplayer with this. Slightly more open world, stealth sections would actually be really fun, platforming challenges with figuring out how to traverse certain areas that don't have obvious surfaces that attract ink (a la portal). Don't want to get my hopes up too high though. Them comparing it to MK makes me think that there might not be much SP content.

That's exactly what it looks like though. The art style is generic and looks rushed, there's nothing distinct about the visual style. There's not much more to say.

The article claims that this game is focused at a casual audience that is now at the tablet/msartphone market and NIntendo should focus on the other audience because that were the money is..... or soemthing. Meanwhile we got pixels:

That's still a different criticism than "Cheaply made"

And what does rushed mean? The models aren't low polied, they animate well, they have bright colors and textures. None of those indicate anything rushed at all.

Generic is a word used to criticize something when you don't actually know what you don't like about it.
 
Didn't make IGNs preliminary list of best of show (the list is huge too btw). Not going to bother linking, just figured it was interesting to know it is already getting ignored.

the characters are distinct enough to be instantly recognisable, and turning into a squid is nothing if not distinct.

beyond that the use of strong vibrant colors and a relatively white environment is pretty much what you need to serve this kind of gameplay.

Please try to be more specific.

I'm not surprised that it is, most of hte stuff on that list is due out within a few months and this game doesn't even have a release date. This game will need a lot of PR fostering over the next year.

Question is, will the focus be on battling bots (Quake III's SP) or on traversing levels to complete objectives a la a '90s/early oughties FPS? The latter would be really cool for EAD Kyoto to try out, since they could effectively revitalize an older style of play for a new audience.

Level design seems primarily urban, so far. Maybe more maritime maps might make it? There's also potential for arenas IN SPAAAACE.

Even the characters remind me of something you'd see on a Nickelodeon show though. I feel like I've already seen this game a million times before, as far as visuals are concerned. Which is really a shame, because it looks fun. I guess my problem is that it doesn't have the kind of unique visual style that you'd expect from Nintendo, there's just something missing.

Of course it wouldn't be. It's gotta be something edgy to be best of show. Let's ignore fresh takes on game design altogether.

Splatoon is one of the most innovative and fun things I've seen at E3 in years. It reminds me of Portal in terms of innovation.

But it's not about what IGN thinks, anyway. I'm super excited for this game and I'm glad Nintendo is doing it.

They are billing it as their shooter Mario Kart/Smash. They wouldn't be saying that if they intended on making it a little eShop game.

Yeah, but this may be why they need the year. People are gonna want lots of maps and places to play in, and it seems apparent that while the gameplay concept is really polished, there needs to be more maps. I'm not really a fan of more modes, but I can see some interesting ideas (such as everyone having one life but the win/loss is still determined by coverage; last player standing ends the match).
 
What I love about these character designs: their inky eyes effectively make them look like masked vigilantes.

Yes, most of the development period better be about the maps, and the modes, and adding to the arsenal we're seeing at this year's E3.
 
Are we talking about IGN's People's Choice list? Because that list has obscure games like Abzu on it and non-playable games like Uncharted on it.

I'd say it's more likely it slipped their minds rather than they didn't think it was worthy, but it sucks nonetheless.

As far as aesthetics, be it in the levels or characters, I think it's reasonable to expect Nintendo will keep working on this title, doubly so if all the positive responses have made them more confident that Splatoon actually has the potential to sell systems.
 
Surprised to hear that GAF is so positive on this game. I have found the art style to not quite be up to what I would expect out of Nintendo (looks more like a Nickelodeon cartoon than like any recent Nintendo game). Also, just the lack of variety in the game seemed like it could potentially make the game get old really fast. With a game like this, it's gonna need tons of modes, options, character customization options, weapons, maps, and anything else it can to stand out from other shooters in any way other than the fact that there's no bullets. I'm gonna have a hard time getting excited for this unless Nintendo announces that it's F2P for all Wii U owners and is basically Nintendo's answer to Team Fortress 2.
