Splatoon (Nintendo 4x4 team shooter, Wii U, 2015)

that being what I did when I saw this

Splatoon's single player is giving me all sorts of great ideas. There are a lot of cool puzzles they can make with the ink / squid mechanic. I hope theres a great SP campaign and a few more super cool multiplayer modes.

Just wanted to chime in that that Platoon parody fanart is the best thing ever. Nintendo, call the artist and the Platoon copyright owners immediately and get those T-shirts printed!!!

4 way with 8 players sounds way too hectic for a game like this. Doesn't come out looking smart in my head. Intelligent area control seems to be the key to Splatoon's depth.

I can understand the gripes people have with how the gyro controls are implemented because IIRC that is similar to how they were in the Metroid Blast Nintendoland game and it can be hard to wrap your head around input being so different from what you are used to. I get why Nintendo are doing it this way since the vertical axis probably takes more of the precision than the horizontal when aiming, but if you are using dual analogs, you already are trying to have 2 reconcile 2 inputs to aim on different axes, to throw in another input is tricky.

I'd prefer if they did a hybrid set up to how it was handled in RE:R where the aiming is primarily done with the analog and gyros could be used for fast turns and quick precision. That control scheme uses the strengths of both scheme to work together and it's my person favorite of any control scheme for FPS/TPS and it's pains me that more devs don't adopt it. Hopefully Nintendo has that setup in there because I feel it's also the middle ground that can satisfy both people who like gyro and people who like analogs because it's really is which ever you choose to use to fit your play style. Then perhaps people wouldn't get so turned off to the idea of gyro aiming which I personally feel is superior to analog alone, gyro alone, or IR pointing alone.

I really hope Nintendo take their time with this and give it the content and polish it deserves. I shouldn't worry about this because Nintendo always do a good job with this but I'm a little concerned with them saying that this is due in the first half of next year.

I also hope they 1. Give it a marketing push like they have for Mario Kart 8 and 2. Have the Wii U at a cheaper price point when it launches. If it is a first half game and the system doesn't get a price cut this year then a cut to coincide with the launch of Splatoon would be great.

Played this yesterday, I thought it was very good except for the motion controls. They just did not click with me. Luckily there is an option on the gamepad to turn them off at any time. From what little i played there seemed to be quite a bit of depth and maneuvers you could pull off that aren't explained and are just figured out by continuous play.

Loving everything I've seen about this game and can't wait to play it.

What do you guys think we'll see by way of storyline or universe building? I love Nintendo's design philosophy of building everything around a game's core mechanics. So what, is ink-slinging a sport in this world? Are they rival gangs "tagging" up territory? Or is it rival schools? Will we see these characters fleshed out more, perhaps with dialogue and cutscenes?

Also, what would you all prefer in terms of a single player campaign, if there is one: a progression of linear levels a la COD, or challenges/missions on the existing MP maps?

I would really like to see a Splatoon amiibo, as well.

And I would really like to see the inklings in Smash Bros. as well. Though not as much as Lip or Jill or Ashley. It would still be neat.

I can't remember where they said it, but they talked about different maps and modes. I'm not too worried about this game lacking content, although I get a feeling we won't hear much more about it until next year. Maybe in the October Direct, although I feel like that'll be more focused on all the games coming out this year. I expect we'll get new game modes and stuff in February

I have a feeling with the game still being this far out that Nintendo has intentionally held lot of their cards close to the chest. They've often said before that they don't like to reveal games too early for fear of cash in copy cats. Plus I'd like to give the devs over there the benefit of the doubt that if we plebs can think of a million different modes and ways to apply this painting mechanic they've thought of t lest a million more. This is a game that begs for DLC maps and additional content, so don't be surprised if, like MK8, Nintendo pushes hard on that front with this title (especially if the hefty buzz surrounding the game currently turns into an equally successful release)

I'm a little confused by the thread title. It says 4x4 which implies 16 players. Four teams of four players, but the OP says 8 players. I haven't been keeping up with this game, so which is it? 4x4 seems way cooler than 4 vs 4.

4 vs 4 is what I've seen in the playthroughs during E3.

4v4, at least in the main mode Nintendo have shown off.

The leaker (Who has been 100% correct so far) has said Smash 4 will have DLC, but made no mention of them being Amiibo figure related.

well I hope he is wrong or for Nintendo to go with both options because I am buying he shit out of those figurines and some splatoon figs will be awesome >_<

I think X ("cross") is like an alternate way of saying "Vs." For example, Street Fighter X Tekken instead of Marvel Vs. Capcom. Confusing when you add numbers to it since it seems like multiplication.

Anyone got good pictures of all the weapons?

Hope all this fanart is a good sign of its popularity.
yes, I judge popularity based on amount of fanart, its been pretty true for anime at least

In a lot of modern media , that is a good indicator of popularity.

Not all of it, but in a lot of it, it is.

This game looked really fun and original to be honest. And I don't usually like these types of games that much. I'd love to try it. It looks super cute! 4v4 sounds fun.

Is this a $10-15 downloadable or full retail? The concept is fresh and looks like a blast but they're going to have to pack it full of content. Look at a similar wacky shooter, Garden Warfare, and the sheer amount of content, customization, and so forth that game has and it was still I think only 40 bucks. This admittedly brilliant gameplay mechanic in Splatoon might get boring quick unless the game is packed with shit to do.

Retail, and we have only seen a small amount of the game so far.

It's retail. Nintendo is usually good about putting a lot of stuff in their games, so I assume that would be the case here.

I can just see the YouTube videos of slo-mo Splatoon footage set to Adagio for Strings...
