Splatoon (Nintendo 4x4 team shooter, Wii U, 2015)

Also that old video further proves that last gen HW couldn't run Splatoon as some suggested. In Splatoon the maps are way bigger, the character models are more demanding, the paint is thicker and more real looking and you have the squid dive mechanic, all that in 60fps.
Not bad for the runt console huh?
Or Color War could have a much much smaller budget. Mindware Studios isn't even alive today so they clearly weren't oozing in money and seeing as Color War never came out we could also assume that was an early build. Not to knock the Wii U, but I don't think Color Wars is a good example of what the 360 was capable of.

Nah, ofc not, but at the same time Splatoon is not the best example of what WiiU is capable of either.
There are more demanding games on WiiU out there already.

I left the following question on the Nintendo youtube channel.

"Flowing water runs in a lot of cool ways downhill. Is there any chance we may see a stage with a dam that is uphill of a bunch of rolling hills where folks fight to open and close relief gates to flood out different colors across the stage?"

Hope I get an answer :)

Because I couldn't get it out of my head, I made a little remix of the trailer music. I'm still fairly new to learning songs by ear and music theory in general, so if anything sounds off, that's my excuse.

Cool! I think the melody at 33 seconds might be off-key, not sure though.

As for similar games don't forget Mario Party has some of these color territory games as well. There are 2 in this video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FWSzR_dOpFE What really makes Splatoon is the effects of the paint that completely change the environment: Slow in enemy ink, walk regular in your ink, stealth and squid speed etc.

I decided a while ago to not use an avatar but I'll support this innovative game. Squid form represent.

I'm sure this has already been asked but has there been any word on a single player portion of the game?

Yes. In an interview they said that they are planning many things for the game including a single player campaign. I believe it was an IGN interview.

sweeeeeeeeeet. With such an amazing art direction, I can't wait to see what they drum up for a single player campaign

As been said the paint/paintball idea everyone has had (its the answer to shooter without guns). Whats the interesting idea here and really what ties it all together is the squiding. Painting gains you turf and lets you move quicker which gets you more turf to mover quick and causes more ebbing and flowing of battle lines. it allows for hiding and escape which makes it dramatically more tactical play.

Yep. It's an evolution of a genre that definitely should have thought of something like this 10 years ago.

So like, I'm kinda wondering... Splatoon is a great play on words in English, combining Splat with Platoon.

But surely it doesn't work in Japanese right? What's the Japanese title mean?

The Legend of Zelda is Zelda no Densetsu in Japanese, which translates to... The Legend of Zelda.

Super Smash Brothers in Japan is called 'Dairantou Smash Brothers' or 'Great Melee Smash Brothers'.

It's quite common to have English names in Japanese games in general. Xenoblade... Persona... Final Fantasy etc etc.

Not alot of them, infact I believe the legend of zelda isnt called the legend of zelda at all in japanese

You're full of it.

How so? We don't know how many modes or maps it has. I see it no different than any other competitive game. I said the same thing about DOTA2 and was truly wrong about that one.

You thought that about Dota 2, a game that is a carbon-copy of a game that has been popular for 5+ years and was just getting more and more popular?

I mean, I agree with you about this game, but, huh?

I can't wait to get my hands on this title. In some ways this stole the show from Smash for me.

Also, The New York Times gave Splatoon a nice shout-out:

Ahaha:

Correction: June 16, 2014
Because of an editing error, an earlier version of a picture caption with this article misidentified the developer of the new video game Evolve. It is Turtle Rock Studios, not Nintendo.

The music sounds very un-Nintendo-like. But the developers themselves are singing in the trailer track? Wonder who is doing the soundtrack.

The official title for many early Zelda games is ゼルダの伝説, which is literally "Zelda's Legend", and it seems newer games also adopt the English name for the purposes of title art. But even in that WindWaker example, the Japanese name is still there, almost as a subtitle.

The subtitles of the games are always in Japanese, IIRC, and usually a little bit different even in translation. "Baton of Wind", "Triforce of the Gods" (LTTP), "Mujala's Mask" etc. But they're never spelled in English or using English words.

EDIT: Zelda 2 seems to be the first time that the English "Legend of Zelda" appears on the Japanese box, but it's not seen again until Ocarina of Time, at which point the standard becomes using the English logo (The big ol' Legend of ZELDA"), with the Japanese ゼルダの伝説 being a subtitle.
Then you have TP which totally ignores the Japanese name.

I hope they have cool events like Team Fortress, on the last weekend of October the game should include a horrorrthemed event where some Cthulhu-like creature appears and it can be shot by both teams.

This would be great. Nintendo has already dabbled with the idea of official event tournaments like in Mario Golf: World Tour, although that didn't have any exclusive stage elements so much as it rewarded you with exclusive gear. This could be a great extension of that.

I really think they should make the Multiplayer F2P and sell the full game at like $40 or less at retail to ensure an active online community.

The game is super inclusive. Even if you suck, every single second you are contributing by splashing game around in your base.

They Need as much local multi for this game as possible.

The results of GAF's Best of E3 Awards came in, and Splatoon is ranked eighth overall, over games like Arkham Knight, Xenoblade X, and The Phantom Pain.

That hype.

Can you link me to that thread? I never see it on the front page for some reason, wish xenoblade X was higher though :(

Looks like 7 to me...adding numbers:
Code:
1. Zelda WiiU 705 2040
2. Bloodborne 702 1967
3. No Man's Sky 721 1785
4. The Witcher 3 559 1387
5. Uncharted 4: A Thief's End 481 1129
6. Super Smash Bros. 423 1017
[B]7. Splatoon 437 1014[/B]

I was just thinking to myself - they should work in a Portal 2 mechanic where there is a liquid that can have secondary properties like high jumps or slip and fall.

Has the single player mode been mentioned anywhere? I wonder if this is a Unreal Tournament or Quake 3 type deal, where single player mode is basically just a botmatch.

These items have probably already been mentioned, but just thought I'd pass them along...

From Treehouse Live, Day 2, with the developers:

  • There are four maps currently shown in the trailer and demo, but "many more" are in development
  • The level designers have so much fun making maps that people in the department next door keep telling them to calm down
  • Some maps will focus on wall-climbing; others will emphasize varying elevations so you have to consider the angle of your shots
  • Squids were chosen over octopi because their arrow-shaped heads make it easy to tell where they're going on the GamePad map
  • Likewise, shooting ink instead of bullets is useful since you can see the attack before you're hit
  • The art direction is final, with the more urban environments meant to make you feel like you're spreading graffiti
  • The music direction is also final, and the idea is the music heard in the trailer and demo is music the Inklings listen to in their world
  • To go along with the above point, this is why some of the Inklings wear headphones
  • Members of the dev team are the ones yelling "Splatoon!" in the theme song
  • The ink-spraying competition is a fun sport for the Inklings, and the ink is an eco-friendly substance that disappears with time
  • The sound effects team worked really hard on the sound of the ink splattering in various ways
  • The texture of the ink changes based on whether it's a fresh coat or multiple layers
  • They promise the graphics will continue to improve more and more leading up to launch (they already look fantastic, IMO)
  • You pick your loadout before each match, I.E. a charge-shot sniper rifle, a paint-roller melee weapon, etc.
  • You might be able to customize your character's appearance, as well, but they're still thinking about this
  • As others said previously, there will be a variety of modes offering a lot of content (including single-player)
There may be more, but I'm going off of memory, having just watched the half-hour segment.
Late to the thread. Thanks for this.

I think $40 retail with dlc map packs later as well as free update events like the ones the poster mentioned above should be good.
With the events, you unlock new costumes and accessories.

Cool idea. Imagine the textures they could use for those particular inks, like the ink looking super glossy, or matt, or transparent. Doubt Nintendo will do it though.

I demand that they hire Hideki Naganuma to do the soundtrack.

Real talk, one of the first things I felt after hearing the direct feed music was that a mix of what was being composed at EAD & some Naganuma-Jacques would elevate the game to Bestest Game Ever™ levels.

Don't know if I'd want more Ollie King, Sonic Rush, or JSR Naganuma for this one though.
