Splatoon (Nintendo 4x4 team shooter, Wii U, 2015)

For the new page.

The defensive maneuvers are badass. Looks like the game will have a pretty high skill ceiling.

I could gif it if you can give me a minute.

Points for ink coverage. That is the only thing that matters. Even when you kill someone it only gives you points of the ink from their death explosion that lands on an area not your color.

Is there a way to tell what the opposing team's score is? If not, what is the point of knowing the points for ink coverage during the battle?

Tbh i think everyone had think about the mario paintball idea, i know i did, but this is better, the squid mechanic is awesomee!

I remember seeing the traielr and thinking "Finally, mario paintball!!" then saw the squid and went "omg WTF is this?!, it's awesome!"

It's a personal point counter. If you look at the map (the gamepad map) you can see exactly how much "points" there are by ink cover on the map. And as SirUltimos said it shows how much more you need to get a super weapon.

edit: And whoever covers more of the map by the end wins. Everything in this game ties together beautifully.

Anyone else think the Splatoon kids could be a really compelling smash character? Painting the ground and then turning into a squid in it could open up a really unique character. Costume swap for boy and girl.

Would definitely consider maining. I think they would be great.

Yes, I hope they release Inkling playable as a DLC for Smash 4, since it is too late to add her to the game (I think). The girl must be the default version, though. :P

No doubt now that splatter-jumping's going to introduce frame data study once people start playing. It's not the wave-dashing of this game, though...assuming there even is such an unknown, exploitable technique lying in wait.

So they were just sitting around watching Squidgirl one day, when suddenly inspiration struck!

The game looks fun, and I'm definately glad to see some sort of new ip coming from Nintendo. Looking toward to it.

TBH I think this game started off as a paintball game (Mario Paintball?) before it evolved into what it did. I think they were talking about it during the Nintendo Digital Event? Something about how "we were developing this game blah blah blah and then when trying to come up with ideas for the ink, someone said 'what if the characters were squids?'"

Points for ink coverage. That is the only thing that matters. Even when you kill someone it only gives you points of the ink from their death explosion that lands on an area not your color.

Now that you mention it, that does seem to encourage offensive play. A kill in an area you already control wouldn't help as much, so you'd rather advance into the other team's territory.

Strategically it helps when you kill the person farthest into your territory, since you can only warp to locations where your teammates are, so it causes them to lose ground.

Any word on what the local play support will be?

I read somewhere that a 1v1 mode (one on TV, one on GamePad) is confirmed. I'll try to track down the source and edit it in to this post.

Edit: never mind, I must have imagined it or been thinking of something else.

This game looks super fun. I'm stoked to try it out. Does anyone know if it will be a full retail title or eshop title? Doesn't seem like a game with enough content to justify a full retail release, but who knows, we only saw one mode.

I'd love some split screen support. 2vs2. Nintendo is real good about local mp support. Here's hoping they come through

It seems I got mixed up with the points thing. As others have said before only the final outcome matters, who covered the most area. The points are a little bit different in that you're rewarded points when you paint an area but when it gets covered the points aren't taken away. So the points are the amount of ink you sprayed on blank areas/enemy ink but not a representation of the final amount left on the map.

Yup and that will get you closer to attaining a super weapon, to cover even more turf.

Agreed.

They have a lot more content planned. It is a retail release.

Yeah, they talked about this during one of the E3 Streams. That's why you can still be the overall best performing player on the losing team, because you racked up the most points but your team ended up covering less area than the other team.

These items have probably already been mentioned, but just thought I'd pass them along...

From Treehouse Live, Day 2, with the developers:

  • There are four maps currently shown in the trailer and demo, but "many more" are in development
  • The level designers have so much fun making maps that people in the department next door keep telling them to calm down
  • Some maps will focus on wall-climbing; others will emphasize varying elevations so you have to consider the angle of your shots
  • Squids were chosen over octopi because their arrow-shaped heads make it easy to tell where they're going on the GamePad map
  • Likewise, shooting ink instead of bullets is useful since you can see the attack before you're hit
  • The art direction is final, with the more urban environments meant to make you feel like you're spreading graffiti
  • The music direction is also final, and the idea is the music heard in the trailer and demo is music the Inklings listen to in their world
  • To go along with the above point, this is why some of the Inklings wear headphones
  • Members of the dev team are the ones yelling "Splatoon!" in the theme song
  • The ink-spraying competition is a fun sport for the Inklings, and the ink is an eco-friendly substance that disappears with time
  • The sound effects team worked really hard on the sound of the ink splattering in various ways
  • The texture of the ink changes based on whether it's a fresh coat or multiple layers
  • They promise the graphics will continue to improve more and more leading up to launch (they already look fantastic, IMO)
  • You pick your loadout before each match, I.E. a charge-shot sniper rifle, a paint-roller melee weapon, etc.
  • You might be able to customize your character's appearance, as well, but they're still thinking about this
  • As others said previously, there will be a variety of modes offering a lot of content (including single-player)
There may be more, but I'm going off of memory, having just watched the half-hour segment.

When the score generates at the end, it seems to generate in two parts. I always assumed that one part had to do with percentage of the map covered and the other part had to do with points scored. Why else would it generate in two parts? Is that confirmed to be incorrect?

This game looks squiddy great. I have an inkling that it'll be splats of fun.

I find it really amusing how much the inkling boy gets ignored. All those descriptions out there, going "a game where squid girls shoot ink" or something like that... I think I've read that kind of thing more than once.

Is there a way to tell what the opposing team's score is? If not, what is the point of knowing the points for ink coverage during the battle?

I believe human beings like it when their numbers go up.

Nice collection of bullets. Is the stream archived yet?

Thanks for this, it's very useful.

That's... kind of nice, actually.

I always thought that was to make things more exciting. First the gradual build-up of score, then a pause where you go "Come on, who won? Out with it!" and then: Bam. There's the final score.

I also have all of the part in order here:

It should probably be in the OP. Maybe a new thread with all the details? A lot of people are asking for info or don't know about the stream info.

That's... kind of nice, actually.
When they were saying it live I'm pretty sure they were making it up on the spot. :lol Just to cover their tracks.

Until kids in real life do it with real paint. A tragedy waiting to happen.
Ha, I think that's why the devs said it's eco-friendly paint that disappears with time. They want kids to understand the magic graffiti in Splatoon is OK, but not the real-life graffiti. :-)

That's correct. That's what I said. There are two "scores" but only one way of determining victory. You win if your team holds a majority of the map in your color ink at the end of the match. That's the winning team. The individual score has to do with what I quoted. So you can track your own development and still be the best overall player even if your team loses.

Edit: Oh, if you're talking about how the ink covered percentage bar loads up a certain amount before the BAM! when the winning team is decided, that's just for dramatic effect.

Good shit

Online multiplayer and single-player are a lock, but I hope they find a way to make splitscreen local multiplayer work, as well. They'd have to find a way to represent the GamePad info and options onscreen, since most players would be using Pro Controllers, etc.

10 legged superiority. You darn right squid>octopus

So... what happens when they explode into ink @_@
I'm guessing Inklings are made out of ink themselves. They can shape-shift between their squid and humanoid forms, but their corporeal structure can be temporarily collapsed by sufficient ink-based kinetic impact. They then reconstitute their original forms back at base. *adjusts imaginary glasses*
