The 2010 World Cup wasn't too bad. It just kinda fizzled out a bit toward the latter matches and the vuvuzelas ended up being the main talking point after the fact. But the Ghana v. Uruguay quarterfinal was one of the most drama-filled games in recent memory.

I think the 2006 World Cup was probably the worst I've seen. I've been following WCs since Italia '90 and I've watched extensive highlights of the '82 and '86 WCs.

The 1990 World Cup will always have a soft-spot for me because it was my first, but in hindsight it was one of the worst overall. Too many boring low-scoring games, too many shoot-outs, and an absolutely dreadful Final. Pretty much the main highlights were Roger Milla and all the spectacular goals from free kicks.

I do agree though that after to closing in on the end of round 2, these have been probably the most exciting group stage matches on the whole of any World Cup in recent memory. Out of 20 something games, there's only been a couple of stinkers and the high scoring average is very welcome, especially in the modern game.

I just hope this WC doesn't lose steam in the knockout rounds when the stakes are raised. Most teams tend to play more conservative in the knockout rounds. I think that's why it's really great to have several surprise teams in the 2nd round because they tend to play with no fear and nothing to lose, which usually opens up the game. Whereas the big powerhouses tend to be scared shitless that they'll get eliminated if they exit the tournament early so they tend to play too conservative and you get boring games.

no. but germans being racists is nothing new, sadly.

disagree there. 2006 was excellent with zidane showing everyone how its done.

the rest was meh unfortunately.

If the USA is ever going to make a statement on the world stage, tomorrow is the time. By good fortune, the tables have been set perfectly for the US to advance from a very tough group. They will completely control their destiny through the very end of the group stage. Most people thought they would be effectively eliminated after the first game.

I know some of our International brethren are probably annoyed with all the "Freedom!!11" and crying eagle posts, but you can't underestimate how huge it would be for the US to advance out of this group in terms of soccer development in our country. It would provide rocket fuel to our youth programs to put real resources behind youth soccer and not just make it "Pay to Play" for rich kids. We lose so much good talent every year because of the costs of club soccer. Advancing out of this group, would also give a big boost to the MLS and give them a greater viewership, which will allow them to pay players more money thereby attracting better players overall.

This is the butterfly effect! If the US doesn't advance out of this group, soccer is doomed in America! No pressure.

Blackfacing might be inappropriate but is not viewed as racist in Germany. There is no cultural root that makes this connection. It's not even mean spirited.

It's not that big of a deal in many places outside the US. When I lived in Argentina I saw many people using Blackface in costume parties, usually when they were dressed as Ronaldinho.
But Argentinians are pretty racist, I mean, they even paint their Ronaldo white.

If I had tomorrow off work then I would definitely stay up for this game. I may do so anyway.

Shit it's the late game? That sucks.

Not that interested in the other games today to be honest but will probably watch them anyway. Group H is just such a bummer.

I thought I saw a Ghanan fan with whiteface at both the US and Germany games.

I'm impressed by Ghana's team overall. They deserve better- 1 pt from 2 good games.

That doesn't really make sense.

The one practicing it doesn't have any say if it's offensive or not. If black people in South America/Germany don't mind them using blackface, then that's one thing, but the ones putting the masks on can't decide that. The intent (or supposed malice) behind it can't be used as validation.

So how large was the outcry in Ghana?

And even then it would be just offensive or insulting but not racist. Because racism is the prejudice and discrimation based on biological differnces.

Oh man..that Germany - Ghana game sure was something. That second half was great to watch. Fair result I'd say. Totally expected us to dominate but Ghana was really good.

Messi saving Argentina wasn't as entertaining as it should be and Bosnia got robbed...what a day. :P

Looking forward to US - Portugal today.

Omg, that's mean...and awesome. xD

no no let them have this delusions, this is one of my favourite defence forces on Gaf, if you ignore it it will go away, heck it might even stop existing all together.

so US black people are offended by Germans dressing up in Brazil when playing against Ghaneans... Too bad for them, but the whole world doesn't have to always cater to US feelings.

And people who think blackface has no connotation in Germany are also idiots. Do I need to remind people what happened during "Wetten Dass...?" for example?

Happened a lot recently. Think a little bit of "football fatigue" is setting in... people aren't happy enough to talk about just the matches anymore.

I am. I didn't derail it.

Belgium - Russia: I guess Belgium will take this? They didn't look tha timpressiv ein their last game but Russia looked even worse.

South Korea - Algier: zzzzzZZZZzzzz

Portugal - USA: I genuinely don't know. We might get another situation where nothing happens and then a single situation from a player like Ronaldo decides the whole game like with Argentina yesterday.

What is that? If anything I'll be suffering from World Cup withdrawl when the tournament is done.

But yeah, you're right. Actual football talk seems to pick up closer to game time in this thread.

Man, this made me sad. As we all enjoy the World cup were all the best teams are. Have you ever stopped and wondered what the worst football team in the world is going through?
Of course not, your're all emotionless rocks

^ Feel so bad for them
If you're interested in football at the bottom of the Fifa Rankings you should watch the documentary "The Other Final" about a football match organised by a dutch filmmaker between the (at that point) lowest ranked countries Bhutan and Monteserrat.

The match was played on the same day as the 2002 World Cup final between Brazil and Germany and the documentary really shows how sports can bring two different cultures together.
