I'm already preparing my heart for this show's cancellation. It's too good to continue. the lack of talkbacks on AICN or NeoGaf, and the general lack of fan buzzing, probably means that there's not much life in her...

...which is sad. This show is killing it. From the acting to the production value to the score, I love this series. Yes, Eva Green is holding it down, but I don't feel like ANYBODY is dropping the ball here acting-wise. We MUST have the wolf in the finale.

This series is so rich in atmosphere and deals out plot progression in such delicious little bites. The pacing is perfect.

Already renewed for a second season, with more episodes :)

I also think the pilot ratings were the biggest for 18-42 year olds for Showtime since Dexter... it will last a while, hopefully it doesn't turn into Weeds/Dexter and get horrible in a season or two.

Jesus Christ, Eva Green is GIVING IT ALL.

Hold me, I'm scared.

Edit: a good montage? Are my eyes deceiving me?

Edit 2: Incredible, just incredible. Eva Green's intensity is unparalleled. I literally feel exhausted just from watching her performance. They better push her for the Emmys after this episode. There's nothing on TV like her; force of nature is an apt description.

I'd also like to note that Doc Frank has suddenly climbed to the top 3. I enjoyed his part before, but now I'm definitely intrigued by him. His flameout at the priest was as unexpected as amazing.

Edit 3: io9's updated their handy little chart.

Stay fab and safe, my wonderful egyptologist.

I was really hoping Frankencorpse Mk I. Would bust in at the end and perform the exorcism himself and just have the rest of the characters staring at him and victor like DUDE WTF IS THIS?

Any chance of this making it to Netflix? Was Spartacus a Showtime original? Because I think that wound up on Netflix eventually.

Dexter and Weeds are on Netflix so it's entirely possible.

You may be better off borrowing a friend's HBO GO password since it's the same for Showtime Anytime.

Poppy Z. Brite once said, "Caitlin R. Kiernan writes like a Gothic cathedral on flames." I think that sentiment can easily be applied to Evan Green performance week in and week out on this show. She's a fucking powerhouse. I honestly don't think I've seen another actor deliver this level of intensity to a television series. It's one thing to do it for a scene or two, but she's done it for two hour long episodes. "Closer Than Sisters" and "Possession" made for riveting television, and their success totally hinged on her unhinged performance.

Timothy Dalton continues to do great work. His scene with Hartnett when discussing Africa would have been a highlight on any other show. He brings just the right amount of menace and vulnerability to the character. He's successfully painted Malcolm Murray with enough shades of gray I could believe he wanted Vanessa possessed or that the whole thing was simply an unfortunate circumstance he was willing to take advantage of.

Doctor Frankenstein has really been coming into his own. This episode helped really fill in his character, and give him some real depth. Making him a morphine addict was an interesting choice, but ultimately works, I think. His outburst at the Priest was also well done. Plus his scene with Hartnett was a welcome relief from the intensity of the rest of the episode.

Speaking of Hartnett, he's doing the best work in his career. Unfortunately for him, he's on a show with Eva fucking Green and Timothy Dalton. Anything he does simply pales in comparison. That said, he really stepped it up for the final scenes. His religious background is interesting, especially if he ends up being a werewolf.

Because this show is so wiling to devote hours to character development, there's a ton of plot to address in the finale. Pretty much every major plot needs wrapped up; Dracula, the Ripper murders, Frankenstein and Caliban. Next week has all the making of a real action packed finale. I'm pretty confident Logan can send this into next season on a high note.

This thing is starting to resemble a piece of modern art.

I said god damn. Fantastic episode. My new favorite.

Man, everyone was on top of their game in this ep, Eva Green especially. Can't give this woman enough praise.

The scene with Devil-Harnett was just fucking awesome. Completely caught me off-guard.

Just finished watching all the episodes, and damn this shit is disturbing, wouldnt recommend this series to anyone, specially the sex-violence together

10/10 would watch again

That last minute was intense as fuck. Also how did Ethan know how to perform an exorcism? So he's a priest then? I guess his secret is finally revealed:

No, he was just saying a prayer to St. Jude. At this time all Catholic services would have been performed in Latin, so it's believable he might know a prayer to the patron saint of lost causes. To quote from a poster on TVClub:

It was a Latin prayer to Saint Jude (as popularized by The National Shrine of Saint Jude in Chicago).

Sāncte Iūde apostole glōriōse serve fidēlis Iēsū amīce ora pro ea.
Most holy Apostle, St. Jude, faithful servant and friend of Jesus, pray for her.

Ah, thanks for explaining. I guess his will was just strong enough or something :)

Oh, shit, really? I have HBO already!

EDIT: Well, er, no. That didn't work. I think it only works if you have both HBO and Showtime (or have a friend who does). I guess I'll hold out for a Netflix appearance down the road.

I had Showtime -- and about 700 channels -- for roughly 8 years, but I finally decided to cut back because I almost never watch TV. Naturally, as soon as that happens, a show comes along that I'd like to see.

He likes soup. That's all we know.
At least they finally began giving him lines. We're obviously not going to be getting that much about him this season, but I think his character development is definitely coming. Any word if (not quite sure how to label this)
the trip to Africa might actually come next season?
Seems like something we might be able to take a guess at if we heard anything about shooting locations. Either way, I think his character is trending towards more development.

Also, when I heard Chandler's comment about how he might've ended up in London, my mind immediately jumped to Chewbacca.

He has no story.

*sigh*

reminds me of the black guy in The Blacklist. He just shows up for a few seconds and that's it. Pretty sad...

Star Trek Enterprise was the worst in this aspect though, they totally abandoned Mayweather's character during season 3....and The Shield too.

I tweeted today that all the praise Tatiana Maslany got last year for Orphan Black should be heaped upon Eva Green this year.

Girl is killing it!

I wish Hartnett wasn't in this, I find him utterly repulsive and I can't watch any scene he's in. :/

I don't get the Hartnett hate..I think his character is meant to be a slow burn..and I thought he did great in this episode.
He's the one guy that struggles with the morality of all this, its why he drinks..he knows the world is dark and heartless and he's found out how to survive and thrive in it..but it still torments him.I think he's doing good..
Hes just no Dalton or Green, their roles and acting have been riveting.

The Part where Sembene questions Sir Malcolm was probably the closest we get to a reveal about him. It was really amazing. It obviously hints at more than just Sembene is this really cool #2 guy that hangs around Sir Malcolm.

For those of you that need a refresher, here it is.

I hope he evolves into something more than a guy that likes to hang by doors, kill cats and get his stew on.

I didn't even know there was hate? I thought he's been doing a phenomenal so far his performance doesn't come off as hammy or forced at all.

I feel like most of the hate is cause a good portion of his scenes have been with Billy Piper.

Also cause he doesn't really have the screen presence that Dalton or Green have.

I think he's alright.

Damn, Eva is so awesome. I think I could listen to her verbally shred a person to pieces all day.
This is why I love demonic possessions on tv shows the most mild mannered character can go batshit insane and drop DELICIOUS truth bombs every other sentence.

To echo what everyone else already said: that was a good episode and Eva Green was just great.

Does anyone think that maybe Malcom's son will end up being The Mummy?

That episode was exhausting.

Yep. I feel totally drained after having just watched it. I think I need some sleep...

I'm hoping Chandler returns to the docks and Brona's decomposing in bed.

lol :(

no way Chandler is
not a werewolf look at the the mirror

Heh, I saw that. What a cute little easter egg. :3

Netflix only has some older Showtime shows - nothing current. It'll probably be a few years until Netflix gets Penny Dreadful, if ever.

Spartacus was on Starz, btw, and they had a deal for the first season or two where Netflix would get new episodes every week, sometimes even before they aired on Starz. That deal between Netflix and Starz ended though, so most of Starz' programming is no longer available on Netflix.

Great episode. Except when Vanessa
bounced off the wall near the end.
lol. Way too OTT.

I don't understand, does everyone hate Billie Piper because of her accent? I'm not from Great Britain but I can understand everything she says, and I'm pretty sure her accent is authentically done.

Vanessa kind of carpet bombed the entire cast. Basically, if you came anywhere near her, she'd crush your soul and leave you butt naked in front of everybody else. It was amazing.

Sambene did right by staying out of that room.

I love her ability to absolutely destroy anyone with nothing more or less than the truth.

Right? It's the best.
